The Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card - 75,000 bonus Qantas points

Offering you the choice of two rewards programs, the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is a flexible credit card with an excellent range of platinum perks. If you are interested in earning Altitude points, check out the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card. Apply today and you can benefit from 75,000 bonus Qantas points when you spend $4,000 on eligible purchases within 90 days of card approval. Plus, discounted annual card fee of $49 for the first year ($150 thereafter) and annual $50 Qantas Rewards Fee. 0% p.a. for 24 months on balance transfers requested at card application. 1% balance transfer fee applies.

What we love…

One of the great things about the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is its flexibility and as a cardholder, you can choose to earn points on the Altitude program, or you can opt in to the Qantas program. Here we will look at the Altitude Qantas program and if you are interested in earning Altitude points, have a look here.

All you have to do to get your hands on those bonus points is apply and be approved by 24 February 2022, and then spend $4,000 on eligible purchases within 90 days of card approval. Once you’ve made that spend, the bonus 75,000 points will be credited to your account within 12 weeks. Then it’s simply a matter of deciding what you want to spend them on.

Qantas

When you choose to earn Qantas points you opt in to the Qantas program, paying a $50 Qantas Rewards fee. Within this program, you can earn 0.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases*, to be redeemed within the Qantas Store for merchandise and gift cards, or on travel products such as flights and accommodation.

Qantas Points are capped at $100,000 per year. Bonus Qantas Points excluded in the cap.

In terms of that 75,000 bonus points, it will get you further with Qantas, allowing you to fly from Perth to Singapore in business class (57,000 points) or Sydney to London in economy class (55,200 points). You will also hand over fewer points for that $250 Woolworths Group WISH Digital Gift Card, redeeming just 49,350 Qantas Points (compared to 58,750 Altitude Points).

Point calculations are accurate but may be subject to change without notice. All routes may have additional taxes and charges.

What’s not so great…

As you will find with most platinum rewards cards, the interest charged on the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is not low. With both the purchase rate and cash advance rate being relatively high, it’s best to avoid cash advances and to clear your balance month-to-month.

As for points redemption, there are other credit cards on the market offering a higher earn rate on the Qantas program, but it’s up to you to work out which one offers the most back for your spend. With its relatively low annual fee, the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card may just offer a more rewarding option.

Why should you choose this card?

If you’re looking for a flexible rewards card with some nice extras on the side, the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card could be well worth looking into. Plus, a discounted annual card fee of $49 for the first year ($150 thereafter) and annual $50 Qantas Rewards Fee. Ongoing as a cardholder, you will pay a $150 annual fee plus an annual $50 Qantas Rewards fee, for choosing to earn Qantas points.

You can also add one additional cardholder at no extra cost to earn points faster. Cardholders benefit from a range of complimentary insurance covers.

Why is there a $50 fee for qantas rewards?

Hi there Andy, there are certain fees for transferring points and credit card processing fees behind the scenes for banks, which is why the card has a $50 Qantas rewards membership. Some credit cards come with no Qantas membership fees, but trade off with a higher annual fee.

Thanks so much for answering my question, Roland! I am interested why this charge has only come in in the last three years, I've been with Westpac and Qantas for years and was never charged it before - maybe this happened when Westpac changed their cards over (Westpac's idea, not ours) from Visa to Mastercard about three years ago? Interestingly, my partner has an Earth Black card but doesn't get charged this fee, although he does pay $125 annual fee (I pay $150).

Hi Roland, can you please clarify the $50 Qantas Rewards fee - who is charging this, Westpac or Qantas, and how do they justify the charge? I have spoken to both companies, and each swears it's being charged by the other! thanks!

Hi David, the $50 Qantas Rewards fee is charged by Westpac. But that payment is then paid to Qantas by Westpac for your Qantas membership. This way, you only need to pay one company, which in this case is Westpac and Westpac will take care of paying Qantas to ensure you have Qantas membership.

Hi Roland, Could you tell me whether annual card fee of $99 for the first year includes annual $50 Qantas Rewards Fee? Thanks

Hi Mark, we dug into this for you and see that the $50 annual Qantas Rewards fee will need to be paid along with the annual fee.

I have an Altitude Platinum Visa Card and have been told that it is changing to a Mastercard, do I loose any of my current benefits?

    25 November 2019
Hi Robert, its always a good idea to review the features of the card to ensure you are getting what you want. The switch from Visa to Mastercard itself from Westpac should not impact any features directly. Though cards do change over time. So just have a run through the features and earn rate on our page: https://www.creditcard.com.au/westpac-altitude-platinum-qantas-credit-card/

Hi there, I applied for and was approved for a Qantas Westpac Platinum card at the end of November and didn’t supply a Qantas FF membership as I haven’t joined Qantas FF. Am I too late? If I join today will they still credit the 60,000 bonus points I have qualified for? Are they back dated? Thanks :)

Join asap and supply to Westpac - should be all good as they have not tried to transfer the points yet.
