Who suits the Qantas Premier Platinum card?

Globetrotter: you love travelling, and get a buzz from earning points that make your trips free and more fun. Healthy Spender: your cashflow is high but healthy and you want to earn high-volume points. Discounts and extras are a bonus. Money Geek: you watch your accounts, and like budgeting and hitting money goals. You want good bang for your bucks.

Editor's Review: What I love about the Qantas Premier Platinum card

Cards that earn Qantas points are famously popular, and the Qantas Premier Platinum is right up there in lights. It’s a travellers card, designed to reward you for spending overseas and buying Qantas products, and gives you a stack of travel perks, points and retail discounts.

This card also has a lower interest rate than I’d expect for a premium rewards card, sitting at less than 20% p.a. (most are up near 24% these days). Of course, being a rewards card you’ll get the best value if you avoid paying altogether by paying off your balance each month.

Let's start with the big promotional features and how to use them. The promotional features are for new Qantas Premier Platinum customers, meaning you can have held other Qantas credit cards before, just not this one.

100,000 bonus points. You can earn up to 100k bonus Qantas points by meeting certain criteria. You’ll earn 70,000 points if you spend $3,000 or more on eligible purchases within 3 months of approval. Then, you can earn an extra 30,000 if you haven’t earned Qantas Points with a credit card in the last 12 months.

$50 annual fee discount. For the first year, you’ll pay a $349 annual fee instead of $399.

0% p.a. balance transfer for 12 months. This is a surprising extra for a rewards card, especially for such a long period. You can transfer up to 80% of your credit limit with 2% balance transfer fee . The interest-free period applies to balance transfers you make within 90 days of being approved, and your 12 months start when the transfer is processed.

💡 You can balance transfer from other cards backed by NAB, including Citi, Bank of Queensland, Coles and Virgin Money (just not Qantas Money cards). You can also transfer from some personal loans and Buy Now Pay Later services. The financial institution must have a BPAY number.

How many Qantas Points can you earn?

The Qantas Premier Platinum earns unlimited points (per whole AUD$1), but it does have a tiered points structure that looks like this:

  • International spending: 1.5 points uncapped
  • Domestic spending: 1 point uncapped up until you've spent $10,000 in a statement period, then 0.5 points thereafter
  • Bonus points on selected Qantas products and services: Bonus 1 point, uncapped

What can you get with Qantas Points?

Flights & Travel
110,400 Qantas points =
return flight to London
Shopping
96,890 Qantas points =
Apple watch SE
Gift cards
23,330 Qantas points =
$100 Bunnings gift card
Points are correct as at 4 July 2024. Points values may change, so please check the Qantas website to calculate your rewards.

You can use Qantas Frequent Flyer points for airlines in the oneworld Alliance, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, American Airlines and Malaysia Airlines.

You can also use points (or Points Plus Pay, where you can pay a portion in cash) at the Qantas Marketplace, which has big discounts and earns bonus points on 900+ brands.

💡Earn more points by double-dipping: 2000 Woolworths Everyday Rewards points are worth 1000 Qantas Points. Tap both at the checkout and set your Everyday Rewards points to transfer automatically to Qantas Points.

How can the Qantas Premier Platinum card make travel cheaper?

Most of the extras with this card revolve around travel and making life cheaper and easier:

Feature How it saves money Potential savings
2 complimentary lounge invitations each year You’ll get 2 single-entry invitations per year to a Qantas Club or Qantas-operated International Business Lounge with complimentary food, drinks, and WiFi. It adds a little sparkle to a long trip. Up to $140
International and domestic travel insurance This travel insurance activates when you buy return flights or cruise tickets using the card and could save you money on insurance if you read the terms and feel satisfied that you’ll be covered for your trip and you meet eligibility criteria. This insurance is extensive and includes factors many don’t, including sheduled cruise cover and overseas rental vehicle excess cover. $50-$1,000+ depending on frequency of travel, age, and destination
Up to 20% off domestic flights for you and 8 buddies Every year you’ll be able to use flight discounts: 10% off Red eDeal, 15% off Flex Economy, and 20% off Business flights. You have to book through the card’s concierge service and you must all be traveling together. Dependent on flight costs
Concierge services Concierges are third-party companies that you can use to manage tasks. You might want a hand booking travel, entertainment such as booking tickets or making reservations, or sourcing any information you need, like pet services, health clubs, etc. Concierges can even source hard-to-find items and arrange gift purchases and delivery. You'll save time (priceless, right?), but they will do the hard work of finding better deals and sticking to a set budget.

What's not so great

First, it’s a slight bummer that Qantas Money isn’t compatible with Samsung Pay. Qantas only just released a Google Pay option recently, so I’m sure it’s in the pipeline if that’s any consolation to Samsung owners.

Adding extra cardholders to a rewards card is a smart way to bump up your points quickly, but it’ll cost $50 per cardholder per year. You’ll need to work out if any other cardholders are going to bring in more value through points than the $50 fee.

Also, remember you’ll need to spend the minimum amount to get the bonus points, without stretching yourself to do so. If you can’t make the monthly repayments and you start paying interest, you’re chipping into the value of your points. That’s a sad-face emoji.

Speaking of interest: While you have an active balance transfer, you'll be charged interest on purchases you make immediately. That means you'll pay interest on purchases you make to unlock the bonus points. However, the Qantas Premier Platinum gives you 3 months to request a balance transfer, so if you do your homework and don’t stretch your wallet, you might be able to reach the spending criteria, get the bonus points and then request the balance transfer - as long as it's all within the 3 months.

Overall Rating

The Qantas Premier Platinum is a high-tier card with benefits for travellers that are on par with other premium cards, and some even better. The annual fee isn’t as high as others in the Qantas Points space, and you get a discount the first year.

I had to call Qantas to confirm a couple of things about the balance transfer (because I couldn’t believe it didn’t have a fee) and got through to a helpful customer service rep within minutes. That kind of “not-on-hold-for-an-hour” service isn’t something I encounter a lot, so it gets a tick from me.

All told, this card is worth looking at if you want to earn uncapped Qantas Points at one of the highest rates per dollar, get other travel discounts and perks, and use domestic and international travel insurance, which includes some rental vehicle excess cover. It works best if you keep it paid off, so you get all the rewards for minimal card costs.

For rewards this is one of the best cards, and at time time I signed up, the only card that can get you Qantas Status Credits. What's been disappointing is the lack of Google Pay. This is really hard to find in this info online, they really hide the fact they don't have it. So after months of being wallet free I now have to carry it around then thanks to this card. The card quality for a "Premier Platinum Card" it feels kind of cheap, the printing is really low quality and blurry. The app is very painful to use. I tried to activate via the app - impossible due to the app being made cheaply. Customer service is only via phone. These days I much prefer chat so I can do other things while waiting for the agent to reply. There's no email either. So I'll hang around to get my 75 status credits and bonus points, but then cancel and go back to a card with Google Pay and a decent support network.

I had a disputed transaction and the communication has been unacceptable. The call centres can't answer questions and in fact gave wrong information. They never called me - I have only ever called them. They send letters that are factually incorrect. I have lodged written complaint.

I was a card holder of Qantas Titanium Premier card and would suggest you NOT choose this card at all! It's with bad services when you wanted to add additional card holder and with $1200 annual fee you couldn't get the benefit meets their service fee. Just don't choose this card and they'll make a change.

For the first 12 months with this card, everything went smoothly. Unfortunately I then experienced a fraud situation (picked up quickly and replacement card sent within 2 days) so I felt confident. Sadly, that is the end of the good news. Woeful customer service, think the new card is not linked to my account, could not activate card, cannot get access to transaction data, or change pin. Call centre appears to be overseas and I question staff training. and ownership of problems. After a month of calls, still no resolution and I am sick of it. ,Terrible service for a $299 annual fee

Hi Nicole, those are good questions! Please see below for answers to your questions: Bonus points will be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account within 2 months from when you’ve met the spend requirement. Please allow 14 days for your lounge pass invitation to be available, you can find it when you login to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account online. Once available, you can then link your invitation to your flight at least 24 hours before your scheduled flight. Hope this helps you to have a great trip!

Hi Pauline, The complimentary travel insurance PDS isn't exactly clear on elligibility. My question being the PDS mentions elligible for oversears trips not greater than 30 days. Does this mean the insurance covers the first 30 days of the trip? Or is the trip not covered at all if the return flights are greater than 30 days apart? Also, if a pre-existing condition is present, does this affect the entire insurace elligibility or only claims relating to injuries on the trip? Thank you!

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    12 June 2024
Hi Harley, it should if it isn’t classified ineligible by Qantas, which include Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi branded accounts, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges, transactions made using Qantas Points and government related transactions. If you want to double check, you could give Qantas a call. Thanks Harley!

Hi Pauline, I am interested in this credit card, I just want to confirm in order to obtain the additional 100,000 points I have not 'earned' points in the last 12 months, but I have 'redeemed' points in the last 12 months ... will I still qualify for the additional 100,000 points offer.

Hi Tanya, Qantas have worded this in a pretty tricky way. So if you haven’t earned any Qantas Points in the last 12 months, you’ll qualify for the extra 30k points. If in the last year you’ve earnt points, then you’ll only qualify for the 70k points. Hope that clears it up for you.

Hi there Pauline, I am looking at applying for my first credit card and have a few questions . I just wanted to confirm if there is a minimum monthly spend? Can the card fee come off of the Credit Card balance itself? Say i went shopping and spent a few hundred dollars, will i get charged interest on retail purchases? Or online shopping? I currently have a europe trip i have booked for july. What is the ability to get travel insurance covered for that trip if i have already booked it? And if i use the credit card overseas, what is the fee for conversion? Sorry i know its a lot of questions! Just want to be sure this is the most ideal card for me. I am big on bugetting and like to save money and pay things off as fast as i can. I will definetly be paying my card within 30 days of spending.

Hi Andriana! Your first credit card, how exciting! I'm glad you're asking lots of questions before you dive in. I'll answer in order for you: 1. There's no minimum monthly spend, but you'll need to spend at least $3000 in the first 3 months to get the 70k bonus points. 2. The card fee is charged to your credit card, so you'll pay it off when you make repayments. 3. This card comes with 55 days interest-free. That means you have 55 days from the start of the statement period where all purchases (including online) won't be charged interest. If you buy something on day 55, you'll be charged interest the next day, which is why we say to pay off your card in full each month so you stay interest-free (sounds like you're a smart cookie who'll do that anyway!). 4. On page 8 of the PDS you'll find the eligibility criteria for travel insurance. It does say you need to spend at least $500 on accommodation or the full amount of a return flight or cruise on your card to activate the insurance. Maybe there's a creative way you could rebook some accommodation to be eligible? 5. When you use the card overseas, in-person or online, you'll pay a 3% foreign transaction fee. That's standard for most credit cards unless they specifically waive the fee. I hope that's helped Andriana! Good luck on your search and happy travels for your trip!

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    27 May 2024
Hi Bree, there are a few things to think about. First, is the card going to be used solely for business? Mixing business and personal transactions is a nightmare at tax time! Qantas does say you can transfer a loan, but I'm not 100% sure about a business loan. It might be best to call Qantas to ask if your loan would qualify before you apply. Thanks Bree!

I mainly want a card for he travel insurance .I don’t want to commit to a card and then find the tests for heath conditions ( previous medical conditions ) make the card of no use to me So can I apply for the card and then if the health requirements make the card of little use cancell the card ? I would not use the card for a your purchasers
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    27 May 2024
Hi Malcolm, that's an interesting question! If you cancel the card you risk losing your annual fee. Could you do your health checks before applying? Another suggestion would be to take out standalone travel insurance, especially if you don't plan on using the credit card for normal spending. Those insurances often have a 21-day cooling-off period. I hope that helps!

I am a Qantas frequent flyer from years ago with no points balance and no transactions. I am contemplating joining the Qantas credit card to earn flyer points for a possible trip in 18 months. I will probably spend over 100K with my current credit (Westpac no yearly fee) over the next 12 months. Is it worth transferring? I currently gain nothing from this card apart from no fee and don’t pay interest as I pay it off every month. What will be my benefit for applying for the Qantas platinum card?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    21 May 2024
Hi Peter, this card does feature a generous bonus points offer of up to 100,000 points provided you meet the conditions. If you’re planning to spend over $100K on this card, it is worth keeping in mind the points cap of 10,000 points per statement period and then the 0.5 points after that. It has quite a significant annual fee compared to what you’re paying now, but you’ll be earning points for that price. If you’re planning on using the card overseas you’ll also earn an extra 0.5 points, but will pay a foreign currency fee. You’ll also be able to take a load off before the flight in the Qantas Lounge too. In the end it comes down to how you plan to use the card to see your benefits. Either way, have a great trip Peter!

Hi Todd, good question! It typically lasts for about a month and will be shown on your statement. During this time, all the transactions you make with your card are recorded. At the end of the period, usually, you'll receive a statement summarising your transactions and detailing your balance, minimum payment, and due date.
