Qantas Premier Everyday Credit Card

Pauline is a personal finance expert at CreditCard.com.au, with 8 years in money, budgeting and property reporting under her belt. about this card.

Overall rating

While this card “only” earns 8000 bonus Qantas Points, it’s not a bad deal considering the annual fee is less than a hundred bucks (especially compared to other cards in the frequent flyer rewards space).

It still has the essential travel benefits like travel insurance and even concierge services, so as long as you don’t mind missing out on lounge passes then this card might give you just what you need.

Editor’s review: What I love about the Qantas Premier Everyday card

This is a decent card for earning Qantas Points and keeping costs low. Let’s look at the points you can earn first, starting with the 8000 bonus points.

Bonus points: You’ll earn 2 additional Qantas Points on eligible purchases for the first 4 months, up to 8000 bonus points. The extra points will be added to your account within 2 months of making the purchase.

Note: You won’t earn bonus points if you already hold or have earned points on any of these cards in the previous 12 months: Qantas Premier Everyday, Qantas Premier Platnum or Qantas Premier Titanium.

Collapsible with Arrow

Qantas says that these purchases aren’t eligible to earn points: “Any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi branded accounts, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges, transactions made using Qantas Points and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs).”

Earning points: Points are earned for every whole $1 in Australian dollars.

  • International spending: 1 point, uncapped
  • Domestic spending: 0.75 points uncapped up until you've spent $3000 in a statement period, then 0.4 points thereafter

Extra points per dollar: You can also earn 1 bonus Qantas Point on eligible Qantas products. Products include flights booked through the Qantas website, Qantas Contact Centres or selected eligible travel agents, paying for Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership, joining and annual fees, and purchases from Qantas Wine and Qantas Marketplace.

Other extras and benefits

0% p.a. on balance transfers for up to 12 months: You’ll pay 0% p.a. on balances you transfer within the first 90 days of your card being approved. You can transfer up to 80% of your credit limit, but there is a one-off 2% fee.

You can use Qantas Frequent Flyer points for airlines in the oneworld Alliance, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, American Airlines and Malaysia Airlines. You can also use points (or Points Plus Pay, where you can pay a portion in cash) at the Qantas Marketplace, which offers discounts and bonus points on 900+ brands. Remember you can earn extra points by tapping your Woolworths Everyday Rewards card and converting the points to Qantas. 2000 Woolworths Everyday Rewards points are worth 1000 Qantas Points.

What’s not so great

This is a nifty frequent flyer rewards card but there are some snags. First, remember you won’t earn the 8000 bonus points if you already hold or have earned points on any other Qantas Premier card in the past 12 months.

This card also doesn’t sync with Samsung Pay, which could be a problem if you’re into digital wallets. It is compatible with Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Lastly, you won’t get any interest-free days if you have a balance transfer. That means you could end up paying 19.99% p.a. interest on the purchases you’re making to earn the 8000 bonus points, which really eats into their value.

One idea is to earn your 8000 bonus first and then apply for the balance transfer, as long as you apply within the first 90 days to get 0% p.a. for up to 12 months offer. You might need to think about how to get the most value out of the card if you want to use both offers.

Who suits the Qantas Premier Everyday credit card?

This card isn’t heavy on features but comes with travel essentials like Qantas Points and travel insurance, making it a good fit if you’re a casual traveller who wants money-saving extras for a low cost.

It has a low income eligibility of $35,000, which is great for a premium frequent flyer rewards card.

Hi, My spending on my cc is approximately $2,000. Would that qualify for the Qantas Premier Everday cc?

    30 July 2024
Hi Narelle, the 8,000 bonus points with the Qantas Premier Everyday card are awarded as you spend, not as a lump sum. So, you just need to spend as normal on eligible purchases within 4 months from card approval and you’ll earn 2 bonus Qantas Points per $1 spent on top of the standard earn rates on eligible purchases. Thanks Narelle!

Hi Carol, that depends on your eligibility, as several factors are involved. Using your Qantas Premier Everyday card, for example, may affect your eligibility. 18 April 2024
Hi Brian, there is no age restriction (besides being over 18) but it can be tougher for retirees to get a credit card. It might be worth checking out our blog on the kind of documents you’ll need to provide. Thanks Brian!

I have recently retired. The only 'income' source I receive is a pension through my superannuation (I receive about $3200 per month = $38,000 per year. I also receive about $7000 per year in share dividends and $5000 year interest on savings. Will this allow me to qualify for the Qantas Premier Everyday card? Thank you
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    28 March 2024
Hi Leigh, technically you meet the minimum income requirement, but these days it seems harder for retirees to be approved for a credit card (I wrote this blog to explain why that might be). Qantas doesn't have any specific info about the eligibility of retirement income, so it's a case of checking you meet all the other eligibility requirements as well and deciding if you want to take a chance at applying. Good luck, Leigh!

Hi , I am interested in applying for this card, however there are some questions I would like to ask If i apply for this card, will the card fee increase from 49$ to 99$ on 11 of april or it will stay 49$ forever? Am i allow to use this card to purchase right away like Qantas plane tickets or items on Qantas store ? Will there be any negative consequences? How the calculation repayments will be ? Thank you for your help Regards Steven
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    28 March 2024
Hi Steve, if you apply and are approved before 11 April, you'll pay $49 for your first year and then the new fee of $99 from then on. Once you've activated your card you're free to use it right away. This card has up to 55 days interest free (as long as you don't have a balance transfer) so you'll have 55 days from the start of your statement date to pay everything off before it accrues interest. The best thing to do is pay off your card each month. Thanks Steve!

what is defined as eligible spends?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    12 March 2024
Hi Michael, these are usually your everyday retail transactions. This can include payments for your pet’s vet visit, meals at your favourite restaurant, and other retail based transactions. You won’t find anything classified as a “cash advance” in your eligible spend count. Hope that clears it up.

My wife and I are both over 80 years of age and both retired. We have in joint names XXXX in different bank accounts . For tax purposes we divide the interest so that way we remain below the taxable income barrier. Between us we earn over A$xxxx in interest each year.. Would either one of us be eligible for a Qanras Premier Credit Card at $49 if we joined prior to 10 April 2024. If not is it possible to to have a card in jopint names as jointly we earn over $40000 in interest each year. Regards John
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    13 March 2024
Hi John, thanks for the information. It sounds like you're doing a great job with your finances! Only a very small handful of cards allow joint accounts, so you would need to apply under one name and add the other as a cardholder or give third-party authorisation (see more about that in Qantas Money’s FAQs). That means only the applicant's income would apply, and Qantas says the minimum income requirement for the Premier Everyday is $35,000. So, you may not meet the eligibility criteria, even with all your other assets. We have a comparison guide for seniors that might help you find a card with lower eligibility criteria, and a blog that explains why it can be harder for seniors to get credit cards. I hope that's helped John, and thanks so much for reaching out and asking. All the best to you both!

    19 December 2023
Hi Gillian, good question! When approved for the Qantas Premier Everyday card, you just need to provide Qantas Money with your QFF membership number. Qantas actually hold your points balance, so letting Qantas Money know your membership number ensures continuity with your existing QFF membership account. You’ll be able to retain your current points balance.
