Complete Guide to the flybuys Rewards Program

Last updated

Here in Australia, the flybuys rewards program is a popular and flexible points program. You can earn points on your Coles supermarket shop (and plenty of other places) and redeem them with a wide range of program partners. While you don’t need to have a credit card to earn flybuys, Coles does offer a selection of flybuys earning cards with offers that can boost everyday points earning. Here’s what you need to know to earn points using the flybuys rewards program.

💳   Earning flybuys rewards points with

  • On the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard, you will earn 0.5 flybuys points per $1, while paying out no annual fee. Extras include purchase protection and a personal concierge on the platinum card option (provided to applicants who meet certain eligibility requirements).
  • On the Coles Rewards Mastercard, you will earn 2 flybuys points per $1 up to $3,000 per statement period, then 1 flybuys point per $1. There is no annual fee in the first year, after which, it reverts to $99. You’ll get 40,000 bonus flybuys points or $200 off instore when you spend $1,500 in the first 60 days. Extras include a personal concierge on the platinum card, and no international transaction fee.

Aside from earning points on your credit card, you can earn points when shopping at Coles supermarkets and other stores within the Coles Group, such as Kmart and Target. You can also earn points when spending at flybuys partners. flybuys changes up its bonus points deals and promo offers regularly, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your online account.

  🛒   Redeeming your flybuys points

When redeeming points on the flybuys program, you can:

  • Get money off at the checkout, where 2,000 flybuys points equal $10.
  • Shop the Rewards Store to benefit from free Australia-wide shipping, lots of promos and sales, and Points Plus Pay.
  • Choose from a range of gift cards, where 10,000 points equal $50 in gift card value.
  • Book travel via flybuys Travel.
  • Transfer to the Velocity program at a rate of 2:1, where 1,000 flybuys points equals 500 Velocity Points.

💰   Getting value for your flybuys points

So, what can you expect in terms of value?

Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard (0.5 points per $1, no annual fee, purchase protection and personal concierge on platinum).

    • On a monthly spend of $1,000, you would earn 500 points each month, or 6,000 points per year, equal to $30 off at checkout, or $30 in gift card value.
  • On a monthly spend of $2,500, you would earn 1,250 points each month, or 15,000 points per year, equal to $75 off at the checkout, or $75 in gift card value.

Coles Rewards Mastercard (2 points per $1 up to $3,000 per statement period, then 1 point per $1, no annual fee in the first year, then $99, personal concierge on platinum, no international transaction fee, bonus points).

    • On a monthly spend of $2,500, you would earn 5,000 points each month, or 60,000 points per year, equal to $300 off at the checkout, or $300 in gift card value.Factoring in the intro bonus on offer, you would enjoy an additional $200 of value in the first year, so $500 overall.
  • On a monthly spend of $5,000, you would earn 8,000 points each month, or 96,000 points per year, equal to $480 off at the checkout, or $480 in gift card value.Factoring in the intro bonus on offer, you would enjoy an additional $200 of value in the first year, so $680 overall.

⚖️   The verdict on Coles flybuys credit cards

The value offered on the no annual fee card is limited, but is a low-cost option that might feel safer for those dipping a toe into credit cards. A higher spend on the classic card option could offer a nice return, but bear in mind its points shaping. Its bonus points offer is appealing – but what will really win you points on this program is getting to know where to find promo deals and points boosters. The flybuys rewards program is one of the most versatile points programs on offer with multiple ways to earn during your regular spending.

Hi there Alan, according to the flybuys site you can use your flybuys points, cash or a combination of both when you book at the flybuys travel site. Have a great trip and enjoy Tasmania!

I want to see what I can change my points for - not cash or super annuation, I'm looking for something I wouldn't normally buy for myself.

Hi Shirley, you can browse the flybuys store to see what you can redeem points for. You can shop for tech items, giftcards and home appliances to name a few.

Hi Pauline, if you are using a bank rewards card to make a purchase, and also swipe your flybuys card on the same transaction, do you earn points on both programs?

Hi Ham, in essence you can double dip on your points. For example, if you use an Amex Velocity card to pay for groceries at coles, you would earn Velocity points for your Amex spend. Whe you scan your flybuys card you’ll also earn flybuys points. If you’re converting flybuys to Velocity points, those points will be converted to Velocity points too! Happy points hacking!

Further to our conversation, I saw this on the terms and conditions; - Flybuys Points awarded for using a Coles Mastercard linked to your Flybuys Membership Account are in addition to Flybuys points awarded by Flybuys partners and will be allocated by Flybuys in accordance with the Flybuys terms and conditions found at flybuys.com.au. Assuming this means I will get my standard points plus additional for the amount I am award using my credit card. The amounts I earn differ from using my standard flybuys points and using my credit card, so in theory you should get both. Thanks!

If I already have a flybuys card and then apply for a Coles No annual fee card, can I earn two lots of points? I would scan my flybuys at the checkout as normal, then pay for it with the credit card earning another 0.5 points per $1, right?

Hi Teagan, no one on the CreditCard.com.au team has this card in their wallet so we can’t speak to double dipping, but the credit card does come with your current Flybuys barcode printed on the back for added convenience. If you find out if you can double dip, let us know we’d love to hear more. UPDATE: You'll earn points with the credit card and also the usual Flybuys when you scan your card. So, if you spent $50 at Coles, you'd earn 25 Flybuys points through the credit card and 50 Flybuys points by scanning your Flybuys membership card. Spend $200 on a weekly shop and you’d earn 300 points in one go. Keep in mind that the card only earns whole points - so 1 point for every $2. Hope this helps

At which stores does the coles Mastercard earn flybuys points? Eg this occurs at coles supermarkets but does it occur at coles express or Bunnings?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    6 January 2022
Hi Grant, good question! It actually depends on what Coles Mastercard you have. If you have the Low Rate Mastercard, Flybuys Points are earned on Coles Spend which means eligible transactions at Coles Supermarkets. If however you have either the No Annual Fee Mastercard or Rewards Mastercard, Flybuys Points are earned on eligible spend. Flybuys also rolled out to Officeworks recently as an extra points earning option!

Hi Cynthia, I suggest reaching out to your card issuing bank directly to request for a replacement card. If you have a digital wallet on your phone, you can add flybuys to the wallet and never worry about a damaged card again.
