Complete Guide to the flybuys Rewards Program

Last updated

Here in Australia, flybuys is one of the better known rewards programs, as it allows members to earn points on their Coles supermarket shop, and with a wide range of program partners. While you don’t need to have a credit card to earn flybuys, Coles does offer a selection of flybuys earning cards that can boost everyday points earning.

  💳   Earning

  • On the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard, you will earn 0.5 flybuys points per $1, while paying out no annual fee. Extras include purchase protection and a personal concierge on the platinum card option (provided to applicants who meet certain eligibility requirements).
  • On the Coles Rewards Mastercard, you will earn 2 flybuys points per $1 up to $3,000 per statement period, then 1 flybuys point per $1. There is no annual fee in the first year, after which, it reverts to $99. You will receive 40,000 bonus flybuys points or $200 off instore when you spend $1,500 in the first 60 days. Extras include a personal concierge on the platinum card, and no international transaction fee.

Aside from earning points on your credit card, you can earn points when shopping at Coles supermarkets and other stores within the Coles Group, such as Kmart and Target. You can also earn points when spending at flybuys partners. flybuys changes up its bonus points deals and promo offers regularly, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your online account.

  🛒   Redeeming

When redeeming points on the flybuys program, you can:

  • Get money off at the checkout, where 2,000 flybuys points equal $10.
  • Shop the Rewards Store to benefit from free Australia-wide shipping, lots of promos and sales, and Points Plus Pay.
  • Choose from a range of gift cards, where 10,000 points equal $50 in gift card value.
  • Book travel via flybuys Travel.
  • Transfer to the Velocity program at a rate of 2:1, where 1,000 flybuys points equals 500 Velocity Points.

  💰   Value

So, what can you expect in terms of value?

Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard (0.5 points per $1, no annual fee, purchase protection and personal concierge on platinum).

  • On a monthly spend of $1,000, you would earn 500 points each month, or 6,000 points per year, equal to $30 off at checkout, or $30 in gift card value.
  • On a monthly spend of $2,500, you would earn 1,250 points each month, or 15,000 points per year, equal to $75 off at the checkout, or $75 in gift card value.

Coles Rewards Mastercard (2 points per $1 up to $3,000 per statement period, then 1 point per $1, no annual fee in the first year, then $99, personal concierge on platinum, no international transaction fee, bonus points).

  • On a monthly spend of $2,500, you would earn 5,000 points each month, or 60,000 points per year, equal to $300 off at the checkout, or $300 in gift card value.

Factoring in the intro bonus on offer, you would enjoy an additional $200 of value in the first year, so $500 overall.
  • On a monthly spend of $5,000, you would earn 8,000 points each month, or 96,000 points per year, equal to $480 off at the checkout, or $480 in gift card value.

Factoring in the intro bonus on offer, you would enjoy an additional $200 of value in the first year, so $680 overall.

  ⚖️   Verdict

The value offered on the no annual fee card is limited, even given the fact that it has no annual fee. A higher spend on the classic card option could offer a nice return, but bear in mind its points shaping. Its bonus points offer is appealing – but what will really win you points on this program is getting to know where to find promo deals and points boosters.
