The Coles Rewards Mastercard

Providing you with a fantastic way to collect points as you shop, the Coles Rewards Mastercard could be the perfect card for you if you happen to be a big spender on any eligible spend. As an award-winning credit card, it certainly has a lot to offer, including great introductory offers, great extras and an excellent earn rate on a diverse rewards program.

But is this the card that will make the most of your spending? Let’s look closer at this lovely little rewards card to find out what it’s all about.

What we love...

This is an everyday rewards card that’s designed to last the distance. In terms of its earn rate, it allows you to collect 2 points per $1 on eligible spend, and up to 3 points per $1 spent with Coles' flybuys partners when you pay with your Coles Mastercard and scan your flybuys barcode at checkout.

You can choose to redeem your flybuys points at the flybuys online rewards store, use them on flybuys Travel flights, hotels and packages, or convert them into Velocity Points. Alternatively, you could opt for Instant Rewards, taking $10 off your Coles Supermarket shop at the checkout every time you redeem 2,000 flybuys points.

No international transaction fee on purchases when you shop online or overseas. However you will be charged fees if you withdraw cash in a foreign currency overseas, all up these cash advance fees amount to 2.5% of the transaction.

If you have an existing credit card debt, you could take advantage of 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 6 months. This rate reverts to the cash advance rate of 19.99% p.a. after the 6 months. Remember that no interest free days apply to retail purchases while you have a balance transfer.

What’s not so great...

When comparing credit cards – especially rewards cards – it’s a good idea to weigh up what you’ll pay out in fees and interest against what you get back in rewards and extras. With the Coles Rewards Mastercard, bear in mind that there is an annual fee to cover, and relatively high rates of interest on purchases and cash advances.

It’s also worth noting that while this card provides a great way to collect flybuys points, the conversion rate to airline points may not be as amazing as you’d hope. You might find that this card provides a good way to collect flybuys points, but another rewards card may be better for collecting airline rewards points.

Why should you choose this card?

As an everyday flybuys rewards card, we already know this card has plenty to offer the big spender. However, there are some other nice extras we haven’t yet mentioned. For example, you can use the Coles Rewards Mastercard when shopping overseas or online with international retailers, to pay no international transaction fee on purchases.

You can also use the card to save on interest on your everyday spending with up to 55 days interest free on purchases as long as you don't carry a balance on your Coles credit card.

Overall Rating

An excellent everyday rewards card for shoppers who want to collect flybuys points while enjoying some nice shopping-related perks and extras.

I was looking for a card to take overseas and went with the Coles Rewards MasterCard. I didn’t pay any fees on my overseas spend and was surprised at how many flybuys points I earned on my trip! Now that I’m back I’ve continued to use the card and I’m still earning a lot of flybuys points, which I’ve recently converted to shopping credits in Coles. This card really ticks a lot of boxes for me!

Hi, I would like to ask whether it is possible to apply for Coles rewards mastercard with a business rather than an individual? Or apply for an additional cardholder to my existing Coles rewards mastercard, but additional cardholder is the business (sole trader type)? If can do, is it free to do so or what would be the fee? Thanks! Susan

Hi Susan, this card is for personal use only. So you would not be able to put in a business name. Again an additional card holder would need to be a person. If you are keen on a business card. Have a look at our extensive business credit card section. Typically you need to be trading at least 1 year and have income for the business of at least 75k to apply.

Hi Amy, you can get up to 55 days interest free days on purchases. Depending on when you make the purchase in your billing cycle and other factors such as if you carry a balance.

Hi Lisa, this is fine. Though transferring your balance does not mean you have to close the previous card. I would take advantage of the balance transfer offer to reduce interest payments. Then just keep your old card open.

Hi Roland, do you receive flybuy points on balance transfers? I see that the interest free period doesn’t apply for new purchases while there is a balance transfer. To use the Coles rewards card to maximise points, is it best to balance transfer current card to Coles or to keep them separate (maybe balance transfer to another interest free card)? Everyday spending would be approx $2000+ a month inc groceries. Thanks :)

Hi Anne, you receive no flybuys on balance transfer. Actually, no credit cards offer rewards points on a balance transfer or cash advances. When you have a balance transfer active. You receive no interest free days on that card. To get interest free days you need to pay your balance off in full each billing cycle. Therefore its best not to spend on a card that has a balance transfer active. So if you are wanting to spend on this Coles Rewards Mastercard. Then its best to look at another card for the balance transfer feature. How much are you looking to transfer and from what card(s)?

Hi Won, I do see my response to your question on the Coles Rewards Mastercard page. Did you receive an email with your question and answer in it? If you refresh the page you can see. Though for convenience I have posted it here again: Hi Won, there is definitely no need to submit 2 applications. It typically takes 5-10 working days to process and approve a credit card application. I would give Coles credit card customer service a call to see how your application is going - 1300 306 397. If you have recently made the application. That is, in the last few days. Then I would suggest you wait until next week.

In terms of only international fee(not cash advance), ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure, 28 Degree, Coles Rewards Master Card has same conditions? For example, if I spend overseas $10000, it will be charged without fee?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

Hi Hannah, yes that is correct. These 3 cards all have no foreign fees on international purchases.

Pros : No international transaction fee on purchases when you shop online or overseas Fees&repayments: Foreign transaction fee 2.5% Which explanation is correct? or it means different? Also In case it is 0% charge, it applies to all transactions same as ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures Card?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    3 June 2019
Hi Hannah, sorry a bit confusing on this one as Coles compliance wanted us to put the 2.5% in that field. There are no foreign transaction fees on purchases with this card. Though, if you pull out cash then you will be charged 2.5%. Where the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure is the winner. Is that fact that you do not get charged an overseas cash advance fee. The ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure is my pick out of the no foreign fee cards. This is based on the insurance, no fees plus rewards program in place.
