I was looking for a card to take overseas and went with the Coles Rewards MasterCard. I didn’t pay any fees on my overseas spend and was surprised at how many flybuys points I earned on my trip! Now that I’m back I’ve continued to use the card and I’m still earning a lot of flybuys points, which I’ve recently converted to shopping credits in Coles. This card really ticks a lot of boxes for me!

The Coles Rewards Credit Card

Providing you with a fantastic way to collect points as you shop, the Coles Rewards Mastercard could be the perfect card for you if you happen to be a big spender in Coles. As an award-winning credit card, it certainly has a lot to offer, including great introductory offers, great extras and an excellent earn rate on a diverse rewards program.

But is this the card that will make the most of your spending? Let’s look closer at this lovely little rewards card to find out what it’s all about.

What we love...

This is an everyday rewards card that’s designed to last the distance. In terms of its earn rate, it allows you to collect 2 points per $1 on eligible spend, and 3 points per $1 spent with Coles’ flybuys partners, including Kmart, Target, Liquorland and First Choice Liquor.

You can choose to redeem your flybuys points at the flybuys online rewards store, use them on flybuys Travel flights, hotels and packages, or convert them into Velocity Points or Etihad Guest Miles. Alternatively, you could opt for Instant Rewards, taking $10 off your Coles Supermarket shop at the checkout every time you redeem 2,000 flybuys points.

No international transaction fee on purchases when you shop online or overseas. However you will be charged fees if you withdraw cash in a foreign currency overseas, all up these cash advance fees amount to 2.5% of the transaction.

If you have an existing credit card debt, you could take advantage of a great long 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 24 months. 1.5% balance transfer fee applies. This rate reverts to the cash advance rate of 19.99% p.a. after the 24 months. Remember that no interest free days apply to retail purchases while you have a balance transfer.

What’s not so great...

When comparing credit cards – especially rewards cards – it’s a good idea to weigh up what you’ll pay out in fees and interest against what you get back in rewards and extras. With the Coles Rewards Mastercard, bear in mind that there is an annual fee to cover, and relatively high rates of interest on purchases and cash advances.

It’s also worth noting that while this card provides a great way to collect flybuys points, the conversion rate to airline points may not be as amazing as you’d hope. You might find that this card provides a good way to collect flybuys points, but another rewards card may be better for collecting airline rewards points.

Why should you choose this card?

As an everyday flybuys rewards card, we already know this card has plenty to offer the big Coles spender. However, there are some other nice extras we haven’t yet mentioned. For example, you can use the Coles Rewards Mastercard when shopping overseas or online with international retailers, to pay no international transaction fee on purchases.

You can also use the card to save on interest on your everyday spending with up to 55 days interest free on purchases as long as you don't carry a balance on your Coles credit card.

Overall Rating

An excellent everyday rewards card for Coles shoppers who want to collect flybuys points while enjoying some nice shopping-related perks and extras.

Re the $99 annual fee, if I obtain the card for the main purpose of international travel it seems counterproductive if I save money on transactions however have to pay $99 for the card unless of course the $99 is not payable until a year later? How does this work?

Hi Colleen, the annual fee is paid soon after card activation. The amount you say will depend on the amount you spend. At 3%, you would need to spend $3,500 to save $105 in foreign transaction fees. If you are looking for a no annual fee card then check the 28 Degrees.

Hi Roland 18 Months ago i applied for 0% BT with Virgin Money.. Unfortunately, i couldn't pay off the total amount on time and i still owe $14,000 and the offer expires in June this year.. So I've been shopping around for other BT cards.. I tried HSBC and ANZ today and i got rejected.. I also tried Westpac today too and they only gave me $6000.. I was going to apply for Coles Mastercard now but I saw that i should have "Good Credit and have not applied for multiple credit cards recently".. So my question is: If I'm applying to many credit cards, does this affect my rating and why? and what do you recommend me to do in this situation as I really need to transfer that balance before interest start kicking? Thanks heaps!

    29 April 2019
Hi Sahera, every time you apply for credit it is recorded on your credit file. You need to stop applying now for any more cards. The problem is that many card providers will automatically decline you if they see too many credit applications in a short period of time. They see you as credit hungry and this is a very bad sign for them. Your credit rating will be affected also by having so many card applications in a short time. The banks lend the money and they decide on the rules for how they lend. As long as its within credit laws provided by the government, It's tricky that you are now in this position but you know for next time. I would accept the 6k from Westpac at this time. It's not great but at least means that 6k of the balance will be interest free. Then you could have another try in a few months time. I suggest as a general rule 6 months between credit card applications in the minimum. Have a read through this article on our credit card application tips.

I have this Mastercard and will be travelling overseas. Can I deposit cash into it to have a credit balance and withdraw cash from an ATM and if so are there charges for using my own money?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    27 March 2019
Hi Cheryl, it is possible. Though you will still be required to pay the cash advance fee (3%), even though you are in debit. If you stay in debit post the cash advance you will not be charged any interest on the funds. With no foreign exchange fees on this card. Pulling out cash should still work out much better than if you used your keycard to pull cash from an ATM.

Basically stores operated by Coles.

Hi Lisa, just grabbing the terms. Hi, I've just purchased the Coles MasterCard on the understanding it does not have overseas transaction fees. On reading the fine print I'm not so sure this is true. Can you explain the fees in terms a lay person can understand. Thanks ros

    Roland

    13 August 2018
Hi Ros, you are correct that the Coles Rewards Mastercard does not have any overseas transactions fees on purchases. You will still be charged if you try to pull out cash overseas. But if you are making general purchases at shops / restaurants etc. Then you will not be hit with an fees for doing so. This is great for travelling. Though banks can charge features on cards at any time. So you should review your credit card features every 3-6 months to make sure it is still good for you.

    18 July 2018
Hi Kathy, as far as I am aware Coles have recently removed the no foreign transaction fee feature on this card. A card I suggest now is the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures credit card. It has no foreign fees. It has a higher annual fee at $225 but includes a free return domestic flight each year. It earns ANZ rewards points and with the travel insurance is a really good package. Another option in a no annual fee card is the 28 Degrees credit card.Sorry - My bad on this statement - there still is no foreign transaction fees on the Coles Rewards Mastercard. It takes typically 5-10 working days to get your new credit card.

Hi Ranjit, the balance transfer is only available typically at the time of application. Hopefully you filled in the details of the balance transfer you wanted in the online application process. Soon after you are approved, Citi (who issue Coles) would then make a payment on your behalf automatically of the card(s) / loans that you specified in your form. Citi also have a unique cheque to self option. So if you did not complete anything at application. Then give there Coles credit card customer service a call and see if you can get a cheque to self for the required amount.

Hi Cath, as far as I know the Rewards Mastercard has always had an annual fee. Coles are keeping the no annual fee for life card. Citi are now / have taken over issued the credit cards and a range of changes are being put in place. Bottom line if you are not happy with the Coles credit card that you have with any features that it currently has. Then you should look around for a better credit card deal that more suits your personal needs.

    27 March 2019
Hi Cheryl, it is possible. Though you will still be required to pay the cash advance fee (3%), even though you are in debit. If you stay in debit post the cash advance you will not be charged any interest on the funds. With no foreign exchange fees on this card. Pulling out cash should still work out much better than if you used your keycard to pull cash from an ATM.

Hi April, you will need to supply your flybuys details to Coles. I would give Coles credit card customer service a call on 1300 306 397.

I noticed that it was stated in the review that you get 3 points per $1 spent with Coles flybuys partners but I couldn't find this in their terms so just curious if this still applies or if they changed this. Thanks.

    14 March 2019
Hi JL, yes is it clear on the Coles Rewards Mastercard landing page. Collect 3 points per $1 spent on eligible spend when you scan your flybuys barcode at the checkout of any of the below partners: Coles, Kmart, Target, Flybuys travel, Liquorland and First choice liquor. Basically stores operated by Coles.

What is an eligible purchase to earn 2 flybuys points?

    16 January 2019
Hi Lisa, just grabbing the terms. An eligible spend is an Eligible Transaction as defined in the Coles Mastercard Rewards Terms and Conditions www.coles.com.au/rewards-mastercard/terms-conditions and means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi accounts, bank fees and charges, transactions made using flybuys points and government related transactions. Whether or not a transaction is an Eligible Transaction will be determined based on information provided either by the merchant or the relevant financial institution. Here is the a link to the PDF with the full terms in it - https://www.coles.com.au/rewards-mastercard/terms-conditions

Hi Wendy, yes it does. All credit cards have protection whereby you can charge-back any transactions like this / not in person transactions.

Hi, I've just purchased the Coles MasterCard on the understanding it does not have overseas transaction fees. On reading the fine print I'm not so sure this is true. Can you explain the fees in terms a lay person can understand. Thanks ros
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

So you should review your credit card features every 3-6 months to make sure it is still good for you.

how soon can I receive a coles MasterCard card with no foreign transactional fees because I'm flying to Norway on Friday evening - 20 August

It takes typically 5-10 working days to get your new credit card.

hi i got approved coles mastercard 0%balance transfer for 16 months how i can transfer the money to another account

    8 July 2018
Hi Ranjit, the balance transfer is only available typically at the time of application. Hopefully you filled in the details of the balance transfer you wanted in the online application process. Soon after you are approved, Citi (who issue Coles) would then make a payment on your behalf automatically of the card(s) / loans that you specified in your form. Citi also have a unique cheque to self option. So if you did not complete anything at application. Then give there Coles credit card customer service a call and see if you can get a cheque to self for the required amount.

Hi,Do you receive any extra discount/flyby points with the Rewards MasterCard when purchasing fuel from Coles petrol stations?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    11 June 2018
Hi Dianne, collect 3 points per $1 spent on eligible spend when you scan your flybuys barcode at the checkout of any partners. Coles is naturally listed as a partner but I am unsure of whether Coles petrol stations are included. I would have a go as its likely that you will get these extra flybuys. You can call Coles credit card customer service and they should be able to give you a definitive answer. 1300 265 374

Hi Riley, yes you can just hold your points at not redeem at the 2000 flybuys mark.

Hi Aayushma, I would give Coles credit card customer service a call to discuss 1300 306 397. Credit scoring can change over time. I think that most of the banks are now tightening approvals. Also Coles has moved to being issued by Citi. This could also impact how they score applications.

Hi Ravi, this could be possible to get a Coles Rewards Mastercard with this type of limit. You can specify a credit limit in the application process that you desire. Though your credit limit would be assigned at the point of application. After they review the information you provide. You can apply directly on the Coles credit card site > https://financialservices.coles.com.au/credit-cards/rewards-mastercard

Will existing holders of this card be charged the $99 annual fee? It has been WITHOUT any annual fee for the last 20+ years.

    15 March 2018
Hi Cath, as far as I know the Rewards Mastercard has always had an annual fee. Coles are keeping the no annual fee for life card. Citi are now / have taken over issued the credit cards and a range of changes are being put in place. Bottom line if you are not happy with the Coles credit card that you have with any features that it currently has. Then you should look around for a better credit card deal that more suits your personal needs.
