Who suits the Coles No Annual Fee card?

Globetrotter: you love travelling, and get a buzz from earning points that make your trips free and more fun. Deal Digger: you're always on the lookout for freebie perks like insurances, dining discounts and earning points for paying bills. Healthy Spender: your cashflow is high but healthy and you want to earn high-volume points. Discounts and money tools are a bonus.

Coles calls its No Annual Fee credit card ‘uncomplicated value’, and I think that’s a spot-on description. It’s not a card with a zillion features, but it has two big power moves that are things people love: rewards points, and no annual fee (free stuff, basically).

The bonus is the insurance and the concierge service, which you almost never see on a card with no annual fee. I’ll explain the offers and how to use the card for the best value.

Editor's Review: What I love about the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard

This card earns uncapped Flybuys points, which you can turn them into Velocity points, or redeem for merchandise from the Flybuys online rewards store or in-person at Coles (that's how I have some very nice stemless glasses). Let’s look at the features first.

No annual fee: yep, there’s no annual fee, ever. That’s an easy one.

Rewards points: Receive 20,000 Flybuys bonus points (worth $100 Flybuys dollars) when you spend $3000 on eligible purchases within 90 days from approval and if you apply by 31 January 2024. Once you’ve hit the criteria, the points will be credited to your Flybuys Membership Account within 4 weeks. The 20,000 Flybuys points is equivalent to $100 Flybuys dollars or 10,000 Velocity points.

You’ll also earn 1 Flybuys point for every $2 you spend on eligible purchases anywhere, which makes it easier to accrue points if you're a Flybuys fan. It's not the highest earn rate you'll find (it's essentially 0.5 points per $1), but to earn more per dollar on other cards you'll start paying annual fees which lessens the value of your points anyway.

🔎 What items aren't considered eligible? The terms on the card say these purchases won’t count towards the $3000: “Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, bank fees and charges such as interest, ATM charges, transactions made using Flybuys Points and government related transactions”.

Coles also has Easy Instalment plans, which let you split your purchases into smaller monthly repayments over a timeframe that suits your repayment ability. There are 3 types of Easy Instalment plans:

  • Cash Instalment Plans, where you can withdraw cash and deposit it in your bank account
  • Transaction Instalment Plans, where you nominate purchases you’ve made and split them into smaller monthly repayments
  • Statement Instalment Plans, where retail purchases from your most recent statement are converted into monthly repayments

Other perks

The Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard also extends a purchase offer, providing you with a generous interest-free period of 55 days on new purchases made. This feature allows you to make everyday purchases without incurring any interest charges during this period. It's important to note that this card doesn't charge an annual fee, making it an attractive choice for those who want to shop and manage their finances without the burden of extra costs.

Then there are the other surprising extras that are usually reserved for premium cards:

Concierge services. This is a free service that uses third-party agencies to make plans and bookings on your behalf. For instance, travel bookings such as flights and hotels, and entertainment like event tickets and restaurant reservations. They can also help with sourcing information on pet services, health clubs etc, and even with shopping for hard-to-find items or arranging gift purchases. Yes, it’s snazzy, and not enough people use this awesome service.

Insurance. This card comes with a complimentary insurance policy that covers items you bought with your card against loss, theft and accidental damage.

I’ve seen some negative reviews about customer service (as is usually the case with banks, honestly), but when I called to double-check a policy on the card I got through within a couple of minutes and had my question answered immediately by a very friendly representative. My experience isn’t a guarantee, of course, but it was a positive one for the record.

What can you get with Flybuys?

Flights & Travel
1000 Flybuys points =
500 Velocity points
Shopping
2000 Flybuys points =
$10 off your shop
Gift cards
20,000 Flybuys points =
$100 Bunnings gift card
Points are correct as at November 1, 2023. Points values may change without notice, so please check the Flybuys website to calculate your rewards.

Flybuys points are flexible to use and can be redeemed for:

Velocity Points, which is Virgin’s rewards program. You can use Velocity points for flights, flight upgrades, hotels, car hire and more.
Merchandise from the Flybuys store, which includes over 1000 products such as appliances, technology, gift cards and homeware.
Money off your shopping at participating Flybuys stores like Bunnings, Kmart, Target, Catch, First Choice Liquor Market, Optus and Shell Coles Express.
Points + Pay, where you can make a purchase using some points and pay the remainder with cash.

💡Earn more points by double-tapping: tap your Flybuys card at the checkout when you pay with your Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard to earn additional points. The number of points you'll earn from your Flybuys membership card varies at participating stores but is generally 1 point per $1 spent.

What's not so great...

This card is a fantastic tool for earning rewards on your purchases, but it's important to use it wisely to maximise its benefits. Here's what I mean.

When you make new purchases using this card, you can enjoy a generous 55 days interest-free period. However, it's essential to manage your spending carefully to ensure you make the most of this interest-free period. Prioritising the repayment of your new purchases within this period can help you avoid any unexpected interest charges and make the most of the rewards program. A little financial planning can go a long way in ensuring that you fully capitalise on this purchase offer.

There are some standard fees with this card, but nothing extraordinary or eye-popping. For instance, you'll pay 2.5% in international transaction fees, a $30 late payment fee and $1.95 per cash advance under $65 in Australia, or 3% if the transaction is over $65.

Overall Rating

Considering it has no annual fee for life, the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard actually has a very decent set of extras, including 20,000 bonus Flybuys when you apply by 31 January 2024 and spend $3000 on eligible purchases within 90 days from approval. It’s a good card to consider if you’re after something that earns rewards points on your regular shopping but doesn’t have the big costs of a premium rewards card. And, you’ll still get five-star perks like concierge services and insurance.

Its low $1000 credit limit also makes it a good one to look at if you’re a first timer, or to keep as an emergency fund. If you’re keen on the bonus offer of 20,000 Flybuys points and the 0% p.a. purchase offer, just remember it’s for a limited time.

My only gripe is the complication of unblocking my account when I accidentally keyed in the incorrect app pin and password. Only way to fix this is to phone them. Phone workflow could be better.

I have used my new credit card many times but keep getting conflicting information about the $100 offer Today I was told that I had to spend over $100 to receive it. Other times I was told to spend any amount activates the $100 offer. Not happy.

Hi, Assume that I get the card for an airline ticket purchase worth 8K, can I covert it in 6 interest fee payments? Is there any other fees to it?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    15 November 2023
Hi Ashok, yes, since this card comes with 6 months interest-free, you could divide the cost of your ticket up and pay it off each month. While there aren’t any fees associated with paying off your balance, just remember that Mastercard will charge a fee when you make the purchase, which is around 1.35% of the transaction amount. Thanks Ashok!

Hi Reg, this will come down to how much you are spending and whether Coles will charge you the cash advance rate of interest based on the merchant. You can get an estimate of your repayments with our handy credit card repayment calculator. Hope this helps!

With coles credit card , is it possible to make bank transfer from the credit card to another bank account and let it sit there for 55 days or more then transfer the money back to the same credit card without getting charged any interest fee ? If that can be done what id the transfer limit?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    24 October 2023
Hi Sami, typically when you transfer money out of your credit card that isn’t a retail transaction, you’ll get charged the cash advance rate of interest. Cash advances don’t attract interest free days so you’ll have to start paying interest straight away. If you’d like to learn more about the topic, I wrote about transferring money from a credit card to a debit card. Thanks!

    17 October 2023
Hi Gary, there are a few cards that have been switching its annual fee for a monthly fee. So far Coles is sticking with its annual fee for the Coles Mastercard Rewards and no fee at all for the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard. Thanks Gary!

Hi Pauline! We pay our rent fortnightly via DEFT. If I link this credit card to pay our rent through DEFT, would the payment be considered eligible purchases and will be able to collect points? Thanks!!
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    3 October 2023
Hi Meiphing, it depends on how DEFT has its merchant account set up. If it’s set up as the type of account that your card company would consider eligible (an ‘everyday’ purchase account) then yes, you should earn points. DEFT might know if you get in touch with them directly. All the best!

Hi my question is - this Coles no annual fee mastercard has no annual fee but does it have monthly fee changes like existing credit card just started to change. Is there a minimum purchase amount that you need to spend annually to receive the no annual fee - which my existing credit card does
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    26 September 2023
Hi Josie, there’s no annual fee or monthly fee with the Coles No Annual Fee card and no conditions behind it either. It’s fair dinkum! ;) The only payment you’ll make each month is the amount you charged on the card plus any accrued interest or fees like withdrawals.

Hi, I hope your day is going well. With the Coles no annual fee master card, Can I get the 30k points and then request a balance transfer with no fee? Kind regards, Kris
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    11 September 2023
Hi Kris, that’s a really great question. Some cards will make you apply for the balance transfer during the application, and some will let you do it later. The terms for the Coles No Annual Fee say “The 12 months promotional period commences when the Balance Transfer is processed, and you must make the Balance Transfer request within 90 days from approval to receive this offer.”. So yes, you can get your points and request the balance transfer, as long as it's within 90 days of being approved for the card. Thanks Kris!

Hi, I received this credit card this month and I've been paying for shopping at Coles with this credit card. I do get Flybuy points by simply swiping my Flybuys card but I haven't been receiving the master card points (1 point for every $2 spent) part. Could you tell me why?

    4 September 2023
Hi there, as far as I know there are no Mastercard points in Australia. This card earns Flybuys points (which is what you should be earning at 1 point per $2). If the Flybuys aren’t showing up in your account, you’ll need to contact Coles credit cards directly to see what’s going on. I hope you get it sorted out!

Does Coles Mastercard can be use to purchase domestic/international flights in any airlines and accommodations anywhere and internationally.? Can I use this to buy online shoppings domestic/internationally? Can I. Use this to pay bills ? Will I also earn rewards in paying bills?

    4 July 2023
Hi Jess, good questions! Like any credit card, you can use the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard to purchase flights, accommodations, online shopping, bills, etc. (as long as they accept Mastercard). Just remember there will be exchange fees on international purchases. As for earning Flybuys points, the PDS says you won't earn points for government bodies (that would include ATO payments, rates, car registration etc). For other bills like a phone plan, you should be able to earn points but it depends on how the merchant (the biller) has set up their payment process and how it's flagged to Coles. I hope that helps Jess.
