The Suncorp Clear Options Gold Credit Card

Earning rewards on the Suncorp Bank Rewards Program, the Suncorp Clear Options Gold Credit Card offers the opportunity to turn everyday spending into travel adventures, merchandise, gift cards and more. The card also offers up to 55 days interest free on purchases, up to four additional cardholders at no extra cost, and access to the card’s Guaranteed Pricing Scheme.

What we love...

With the Suncorp Clear Options Gold Credit Card, you can earn rewards on the flexible Suncorp Bank Rewards Program. With no cost to join, the rewards program offers a wide range of redemption possibilities, including travel options, merchandise from the online rewards catalogue, and an array of gift cards and vouchers.

You can also choose to transfer your points to retail and frequent flyer partners, including Emirates Skywards, Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer, Virgin Australia’s Velocity and flybuys. Alternatively, you could use your points to cover your annual fee, or eligible purchases via Select and Credit.

So, what is the earn rate on this card? You can earn:

  • 1 Reward point for every $1 spent up to $1,500 per month,
  • 0.5 Reward points per $1 spent thereafter

As for ongoing costs, you can keep interest costs at zero thanks to the card’s interest free feature. This gives you up to 55 days interest free on purchases when you pay off your balance by the due date each month. And, while the annual fee is not low, you can add up to four additional cardholders to the account at no extra cost, helping you to earn points faster (note, points shaping after the first $1,500 spent each month still applies).

What’s not so great...

When choosing a rewards card, it’s important to make sure it offers you value. That means weighing the card’s annual fee against your expected points earn. For example, you would need to spend at least $32,200 in a year to earn a $120 Wish gift card (the value of the card’s annual fee). However, you may enjoy a better return on your points elsewhere, such as transferring onto one of the frequent flyer partners to be redeemed for flights or upgrades.

With this in mind, you can see how important it is to keep outgoing costs to a minimum if you want to see value on this card – and any rewards card. That means avoiding interest by clearing your balance each month, and side-stepping cash advances altogether.

Why should you choose this card?

Focusing on rewards, the Suncorp Clear Options Gold Credit Card keeps it fairly simple elsewhere, which means it may appeal to cardholders who want to earn rewards but don’t need too many other extras. As with all rewards cards, it would best suit bigger spenders who clear their balance each month to take advantage of the card’s interest free period.

In terms of features, the card offers 24/7 Customer Service and internet banking, worldwide access to the Visa network, access to handy Visa features such as Visa payWave and Visa Entertainment, and added security with Verified by Visa, FRAUDSHIELD and Visa Zero Liability. Cardholders can also take advantage of lost card replacement within 24 hours in Australia, Suncorp’s Guaranteed Pricing Scheme, and compatibility with Samsung Pay.

Overall Rating

Allowing cardholders access to a flexible rewards program, the Suncorp Clear Options Gold Credit Card also features up to 55 days interest free on purchases, up to four free additional cardholders, and access to Suncorp’s Guaranteed Pricing Scheme.

Had one for years and a large relationship but after paying for a full year they stripped benefits after 10 months. Customer service has dumbfounded me and told me I had to upgrade but they will not honor the advertised price of its platinum card in total breach of Australian Consumer Law! Took over 3 hours to listen so a total waste of time. Shame on you Suncorp!

What does enter income from main job with valid number means?

    23 September 2013
Hi Winnie, it could be that you put a $ sign instead of a number, or put in or left out a decimal place (.) or something like that. Your income should just be numbers with no spaces when filling out the application. Hopefully that worked out for you, but let us know if you still need assistance.

Currently have this card with a balance remaining, however the charges & interest are making it impossible to pay the debt off quickly & contemplating transferring the outstanding balance to another. Please advise.

Hi Elizabeth, you will need to look at the balance transfer credit cards page for options available. Please note you will not be able to transfer a balance to any credit cards underwritten by Citi Group (Suncorp is one of these). Please see here for more information.

Hi Glen unfortunately you aren't able to transfer a personal loan balance onto this card. Citibank and Virgin do allow this though, so you could check out their offers too if you're interested.

How do you qualify for travel insurance
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    15 July 2013
Hi Michelina, you have to buy your overseas flight or travel tickets with the card to qualify. Please read the product disclosure statement though, as there are conditions for making claims, exclusions and procedures you need to understand before taking using this travel insurance. You should also look at the other cards which come with complimentary travel insurance. You can compare them easily and read more about travel insurance and credit cards on our travel insurance benefits page.

Hi, can I transfer personal loan to this credit card? Tks
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    11 July 2013
Hi Theaka - yes you can transfer a personal loan to a Suncorp credit card as long as it's not from a Citibank, Virgin, CUA or Bank of Queensland bank account. The bank with the loan just has to have a valid BSB number (branch number). Read more on our post about balance transfer key rules.

Am looking at transferring balance from 3 credit cards to a suncorp one. Do you still get velocity/krisflyer/qantas frequent flyer points on balance transfers, or only on new purchases?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    10 July 2013
Hi Sharyn, you would not earn points on the balance transfer because a balance transfer is considered a cash advance. New purchases earn you around 1 point per $1 spent - but these would be converted to Airline miles, so have a look at the conversion rate and read a bit more about how it works in our post on converting rewards points to frequent flyer points. You can also read more about balance transfers on our key balance transfer rules post. If you have any other questions we're always here to try and help.
