The Commonwealth Bank Low Fee Gold Credit Card

With no annual fee for the first year, the Commonwealth Bank Low Fee Gold Credit Card allows cardholders to keep costs low over the longer term with no annual fee each year there is a $10,000 spend on the card. Providing a few gold perks, this card keeps it fairly simple, with access to overseas travel insurance, extended warranty and purchase security insurance included.

What we love...

The main attraction on the Commonwealth Bank Low Fee Gold Credit Card is its low annual fee. Well, the standard annual fee isn’t actually that low, but you can reduce it to $0 with your credit card spending. How does that work? Each year you spend $10,000 on the card, the following year your annual fee will be $0. To get you started, there is no annual fee for the first year.

Currently, CommBank offers $300 cashback when you apply for a new Commonwealth Bank Low Fee Gold Credit Card by 01 June 2023 and spend $1,500 on purchases (excluding balance transfers and cash advances) within 90 days of card activation. The amount will be deposited to your account within 90 days after the spend criterion is reached and will appear on your statement as ‘CASHBACK $300’.

You may also choose to add an additional cardholder to the account at no extra cost. This could be your partner, or maybe one of your kids. Of course, as the primary cardholder, you will be liable for their spending, but this can be a handy feature for families who want to keep credit card spending simple, with only one account.

As it’s a gold card, the Commonwealth Bank Low Fee Gold Credit Card has a few select extras on offer. In terms of retail cover, the card provides extended warranty on most purchases, extending the standard manufacturer’s warranty by up to a year. Purchase security insurance is also included, covering most lost, stolen or damaged purchases.

Offering value to frequent travellers, the card also has international travel insurance, providing cover for you, your spouse and your accompanying children for return trips from Australia, up to a set period. While certain conditions and restrictions apply (check the PDS), you simply need to activate the cover before you travel to gain the comprehensive level of cover on offer.

If you don’t activate your cover, you’ll only receive the card’s ‘base medical’ cover, which includes personal liability cover, and unlimited overseas emergency medical assistance and hospital expenses only.

What’s not so great...

Trading low fees for high interest, the Commonwealth Bank Low Fee Gold Credit Card is not a card you want to carry a balance on. The card has a relatively high rate of interest on purchases and cash advances, so it’s best to avoid cash advances and clear your balance by the due date each month to avoid interest accruing.

While it may offer several handy features, this card is not overloaded with extras. There are no rewards, no intro offers, and no exclusive extras such as airport lounge access. While it does allow for balance transfers, it’s not the best offer you’ll find. But, with 5.99% p.a. over five months, it could still help you save money if that’s what you’re looking to do.

Why should you choose this card?

If you want to save on annual fees, while enjoying a few nice features, the Commonwealth Bank Low Fee Gold Credit Card could be the card for you. As long as you clear your balance month-to-month and spend at least $10,000 each year, you could enjoy everything the card has to offer without paying out anything in annual fees or interest.

You can benefit from up to 55 days interest-free on purchases, alongside access to Priceless Cities offers and experiences. You can take control of your finances with the ability to instantly lock, block or limit your credit card, or by setting a Spending Cap. Want to learn how to budget? The card’s Spending Tracker & Insights could provide the info to make that easier.

Overall Rating

As a fairly basic gold card, the Commonwealth Bank Low Fee Gold Credit Card offers complimentary insurance covers, no annual fee for the first year, and the opportunity to pay $0 annual fee each year following a $10,000 yearly spend on the card.

Have had this card for many years and, with the then annual spend condition met, have had no fees to pay. Monthly fees now introduced (Nov 23) if <$2000 spend for the month, which makes it less attractive existing customers (note - no longer available to new customers). however, benefit me is included overseas travel insurance so may not switch card present.

My mother in law is travelling with us to Canada. She has a gold credit card. She is 89years old. Can she get the international Travel insurance?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    14 February 2024
Hi Anna, I've checked into this and found that the coverage applies to individuals aged 79 years old and younger. If your mother-in-law is interested, she has the option to upgrade for extended coverage. You can find further details about this on page 62 of CBA’s credit card insurance PDS. If you do some googling for seniors travel insurance you might find more information. Enjoy your time in Canada!

Hi William, the CBA fees and charges schedule states that you'll need to spend at least $2,000 in the statement period prior to avoid the $8 fee.

IS THERE a cancellation fee if i get this card based on the overseas travel insurance which I need for 10 daysd, and does the annual fee of $89 getspaid in its entire. Also does the travel insuranvce have all the coverage.
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    6 April 2023
Hi Angelo, these are great questions! I’ll provide the answers below for you. - there’s no cancellation fee but if there’s a balance owed, you need to continue making payments on time until the balance is paid. - the current offer is a zero annual fee for the first year. If you meet the spend requirement it will be waived in subsequent years too. You’ll pay an annual fee if you don’t meet the spend requirement and unfortunately, they don’t pro-rata it based on how long you’ve had the card. - Travel insurance coverage is included with this card. But as with any insurance policy, there are inclusions and exclusions based on the level of cover. For specifics relating to your trip, you can check their official insurance PDS or I recommend contacting Commonwealth Bank directly at 13 2221 to chat about the included coverage.. Hope this helps!

I would like to apply for this card but I am not a Comm Bank customer. How do I do this
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    1 March 2023
Hi Paul, you can still apply for the card even though you’re not a CommBank customer. However, we’re not partnered with any CommBank cards at the moment so you’ll have to head to their official website and select the card you want to apply for. It’s worth comparing a range of low fee credit cards available to see how they stack up to the CBA card.

Are you still covered for travel insurance when over 80 years?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    22 February 2023
Hi Bogdan, I checked CommBank Low Fee Gold Credit Card’s insurance policy and it states that the travel insurance cover is only available to eligible cardholders who are under 80 years of age. If you're over 80 years old, you may not be covered by the travel insurance that comes with this card. I recommend to carefully review the policy document or contact CommBank directly to confirm the eligibility requirements and any applicable age restrictions for the travel insurance.

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    11 January 2023
Hi Vikrant, great question! You can actually pay online, via Apple Pay, direct swipe or just tap and go for eligible transactions. These need to add up to at least $1500 within 90 days from card activation to be eligible for the cashback offer. Please note though that balance transfers and cash advances are not considered eligible.

Hi Jain, this CommBank card doesn’t feature what you are referring to. If you’re looking for an interest free introductory credit card, you can compare some of the offers in the market today. At the moment there’s an offer of up to 15 months interest free.

is it good to use only for cashback can we close it after 8-10 months will it be a good idea?

    29 September 2022
Hi Harpreet, when applying for and then cancelling credit cards it’s important to think about what that will do to your credit file and your score. We don’t currently have an active partnership with this provider, but you can compare a range of cashback credit cards that are on our site. Applying for any card is a decision only you can make. Hope this has helped!
