The Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard

As a platinum card earning points on Bankwest’s More Rewards program, the Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard provides a high points cap. With some nice platinum perks on offer, the card has no foreign transaction fees, and offers a full suite of retail and travel insurance covers.

What we love...

With the Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard, you can earn 2 More Rewards points per $1 spent on eligible purchases. This provides a higher points earn than the Bankwest More Mastercard, and a lower points earn than the Bankwest More World Mastercard.

Of course, to know how valuable this offer is – and how good the card’s points-earning potential can be – you need to know what you can redeem those points for. The More Rewards program allows cardholders to redeem their points for the usual range of gift cards, travel and merchandise, with 171,000 points equal to $400 cashback.

In terms of travel, Bankwest has teamed up with Webjet to allow cardholders to book flights and holiday packages using their points, where 41,667 points = $100. If you don’t have enough points for the trip you want, you can choose to make up the difference with cash. Point calculations are accurate but may be subject to change without notice.

What’s not so great...

As it’s a rewards card, it’s not really a surprise that the Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard has a fairly high purchase rate. However, as long as you clear your balance by the due date each month, you should be able to avoid paying interest on your purchases. This also allows you to take advantage of up to 44 days interest free on purchases.

Why should you choose this card?

The Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard is a platinum rewards card. That means it provides a higher earn rate, a higher points cap and some platinum perks to cardholders who want more than a standard rewards card offers. But, if you want to take advantage of all that, you will have to meet the eligibility requirements, which usually involves having a higher income.

On top of that, you will have to pay a higher annual fee. The annual fee on the Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard is substantial. But, as long as you spend enough on the card, you should be able to make it worth your while.

Converted to cashback, this equates to $150, which almost covers the card’s annual fee. Add to that the various platinum perks on offer, and this card could offer real value to the right cardholder.

And those extras are? With the Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard, you will pay no foreign transaction fees, making it a great choice for cardholders who travel overseas frequently, or anyone who shops online at international retailers.

On top of that, you can benefit from the card’s range of insurance covers, including overseas travel insurance, interstate flight inconvenience insurance and transit accident insurance, as well as price guarantee, extended warranty and purchase security insurance. There is also 0% p.a. on balance transfers for six months with a 1% balance transfer fee.

Overall Rating

Good purchase offer and about standard reversion rate for a platinum card. Also gives you good bonus points when you first get the card. Don’t get charged fees for using the card overseas and you get some nice travel rewards. Pretty low annual fee too.

Nice purchase offer – 0% for 6 months. Good if you want to buy something big and not worry about interest for a while. The perks on the card are good too. Some free insurances that are handy for travelling, and you can get flight centre vouchers as well. Make sure the rewards are what you need though cos the annual fee is kind of steep.

Is there insurance cover for Bankwest platinum card holders to cover any remainig or standing amounts apon death?

Hi John, the international insurance with this card covers accidental death and expenses such as returning remains or the funeral, but it's important to read the PDS to see exactly what's covered and what's paid out (and what events make you ineligible for a death claim). Insurance is very nuanced!

Can the More rewards points be used to redeem Qantas frequent flyer points?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

Hi Charles, I checked this for you and found that you can redeem your More Rewards points for digital gift cards or cashback. The wording on the Bankwest site is rather vague, but you can check a range of rewards options on their rewards website.

We have both Platinum and World Bank west credit cards. Can you confirm travel insurance is covered even though not all of the holiday is on credit cards. Also how we get lounge tickets for airports.

Hi there, that’s a great question! I looked into this for you and the complimentary insurance included on both your Bankwest Platinum and Bankwest World credit cards is automatically activated. You just need to make sure that you are the primary cardholder of the card, will travel to an overseas destination from Australia, and hold an eligible credit card at the time that’s not cancelled or suspended. Have a great trip!

I applied for a Bankwest Qantas Mastercard (as I want to cancel 2 of my other cards with a Frequent Flyer I no longer use). I would like to know why my application was rejected.

Hi Yvonne, you will need to speak to Bankwest directly to find out the reasons. Have a read through our credit card application tips. It would make sense to cancel at least 1 of your current cards before applying again.
