⚠ Important changes to ANZ's credit card insurance policies: ANZ is making changes to the complimentary insurances on its credit cards which will take effect from 7 June 2024. A summary of the upcoming changes can be found here.

Editor's Overview

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black is shaking things up with a massive 130,000 Qantas Points if you meet the eligibility requirements, and one of the highest points-earning rates in town. You could also get $250 back on your card, which offsets the first year’s annual fee and makes it an even better bang-for-your-points card.

It includes rare perks that only ANZ offers, such as Rental Vehicle Excess cover in Australia and cashback offers with thousands of brands. You’ll save on waived fees other cards charge for, including Qantas Frequent Flyer memberships.

This card could be a great travellers companion with the potential to save money on your travel costs, or one to help you earn and redeem points for freebies and even get money back on your spending.

Full Review: ANZ Frequent Flyer Black

If you’re after Qantas Points, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black delivers one of the highest earn rates. It’s a good companion for travellers with its mix of international insurances, lounge visits and some pretty epic bonus points if you hit the spending requirements.

It does have a higher annual fee, but that is standard for higher-tier Qantas Points-earning cards. I’ll run through its features and perks, and then look at how to use the card.

Bonus points: To earn the 100,000 Qantas Points and $250 back on your card, you’ll need to spend at least $5000 in the first 3 months. You'll also get another 30,000 Qantas Points by keeping your card for at least a year. You also can’t have held an ANZ frequent flyer credit card in the previous 12 months.

Qantas Club visits: You’ll get 2 visits to a Qantas Club Lounge or Qantas-operated International Business Lounge every 12 months. The invites are single-entry only, only for a single person, not you and a guest. You have to book your lounge visit using the free ANZ Personal Concierge service and must be travelling on a Qantas or Jetstar flight with a QF or JQ flight number.

Bonus Qantas Points: You can earn 1 bonus Qantas Point when you buy Qantas passenger flights and membership fees like Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club. Bonus points are uncapped.

Discounts on memberships: This card comes with a complimentary $99.50 Qantas Frequent Flyer membership, which is something most cards are removing but ANZ still offers. You can also get a discount on your first year’s Qantas Club membership, which could save you up to $256.

How can you use the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black as a traveller?

Much like a good travel agent, this card helps you save money on your travel essentials and gives you discounts on dining and interesting experiences. It has some standout features like Rental Vehicle Excess insurance in Australia, which I can tell you from experience is a relief to have when a rock comes hurtling at your rental car while you’re driving through the Tasmanian mountains.

Feature How it helps travellers
International and Domestic Travel Insurance This travel insurance activates when you meet the Eligibility for Cover terms, which include spending at least $250 on travel costs on your card. You and your eligible spouse and dependants under age 25 are included on the insurance. The insurance may cover unexpected expenses such as cancellations, medical expenses, loss or theft of property and more for travel up to 6 months.
Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia This insurance can help with the costs of rental vehicle damage and theft. A rental vehicle includes a campervan or motorhome up to 4.5 tonnes and most regular cars like sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs and people movers.
ANZ Cashrewards ANZ cardholders can access exclusive cashback deals with over 2000 major brands that include car rental hire, accommodation and retail stores. There are no membership fees and you can earn cashback online and in-store.

How many Qantas Points can you earn?

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black earns unlimited points, but does have a tiered system plus bonus points for certain products. Here’s how it looks:

  • You’ll earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent up to $7,500 per statement period
  • Then you’ll earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent until the next statement period
  • 1 bonus point is earned when you purchase certain Qantas products such as Qantas and Jetstar flights or membership fees.

The Qantas Points program stands out from other frequent flyer programs because it’s flexible to use. Qantas has done a truly stellar job of making points redemption easy and gives you a huge range of ways to spend them.

For instance, its Qantas Marketplace has over 20,000 products from 900 big brands that include fashion, technology, sport and more. Or, you can redeem points for Qantas or Jetstar flights and flight upgrades or to book accommodation.

Qantas is a member of the oneworld global alliance, which means you can use Qantas Points or Points+Pay to purchase flights on over 30 airlines worldwide.

More deal-sweeteners and perks

Let's take a look at some of the other extras on the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card.

Feature How it helps you
Concierge services Massively underrated, concierges are on-hand 24/7 to help you organise travel, accommodation, entertainment bookings, shopping and source information on services like pet care.
Insurance You’ll get Purchase Protection Insurance and Extended Warranty Insurance on eligible purchases. These insurances can help you save money on lost, damaged and stolen items.
Exclusives by ANZ A perk reserved for ANZ Black cardholders only, exclusives by ANZ gives you access to once-in-a-lifetime experiences. For instance, you might be invited to a meet-and-greet with tennis players at the Australian Open, or a ticket to the Archibald Prize dinner.
ANZ Instalment Plans In Buy now pay later fashion, you can break up big purchases and repay them over 3, 6 or 12 months.
Digital device compatibility Syncs with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and wearables like Fitbit and Garmin.

What’s not so great

The downsides of this card are not too bad compared to others in the premium credit card tier.

The annual fee is on the higher end of the scale but it sits about right for a premium card that earns Qantas Points and comes with all its other perks like travel insurance. The annual fee is made up of a $370 annual fee and a $55 Rewards Program Services Fee. You’ll need to work out if you’ll earn enough points to cover (and surpass) the cost of the annual fee.

If you’re thinking of adding extra cardholders, just know that it costs $65 per year for each additional cardholder ($10 card fee plus $55 for the rewards service fee). Of course, you’ll hopefully be doubling down on earning points, and any additional cardholders can access the extras like insurance, too.

Who is this card for?

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black could suit you if:

  • You typically use Qantas, Jetstar or partnering airlines for travel and want to earn and redeem points for flights and upgrades
  • You’re a frequent traveller and want a card that makes travel cheaper
  • You’re a pro at using points to get freebies

T&Cs, eligibility criteria, fees and charges apply (including an annual fee, currently $425) - where it says "this is available to new frequent flyer card members" - does this mean new QFF member or new ANZ Card member. If you make eligible purchases does it matter if you make a payment on your card straight away to cover that transaction. Say I use it for $200 shopping then make a payment that day to cover that transaction. Do I still get the points for that transaction
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    3 October 2023

I would like to pay $3100 on a cruise is that considered an ‘Eligible purchase’ ? Thanks
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    3 October 2023
Hi Vanessa, ANZ (or other card issuers) don’t provide a published list specifying what qualifies as eligible transactions. However, eligible transactions typically include your everyday expenses, such as buying groceries, filling up your car with petrol, covering your pet's vet bills, dining at your favourite restaurant, and more. However, ANZ does specify certain transactions that are not considered eligible. This includes, but is not limited to, fees, cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, balance transfers, government charges, and similar transactions. It might be a good idea to check with the cruise provider on how they process the EFT payment before purchasing.

PS is there an income threshold for applicants? I am self employed and my income fluctuates but I have no debt and an investment property so will I be eligible for the card. I'm not interested in applying if you want payslips etc..Thanks
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    11 September 2023
Hi Jason, I checked this for you and ANZ does not publish specific information for the exact minimum income requirement. It just states that you should have a good credit rating, at least 18 years of age, an Australian citizen, among other things listed on their site. It also states that you should have the following information handly: details about your income, expenses, assets and liabilities, 2 recent payslips for income verification, your accountant’s phone number if self-employed. It sounds like you’ll need to provide payslips to ANZ if you’re currently employed.

When you say 'eligible purchases' to receive the initial points, what is an eligible purchase please?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    11 September 2023
Hi Jason, eligible purchases are your everyday expenses, such as buying groceries, filling up your car with petrol, shopping at your favourite stores, dining at a restaurant, and the like. Just like any credit card issuers, ANZ also does not publish a list of what’s considered eligible. However, transactions like cash advances, balance transfers, cash equivalent transactions, and government charges are not considered eligible.

If I purchase flights with another airline outside of Qantas and One World which is a different loyalty program, will this be an eligible purchase to receive the 110,000 bonus points on offer?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    4 September 2023
Hi Ricky, ANZ’s terms are…interesting. It says you won’t earn points on Government Charges (including ATO payments), bank fees, card account adjustments resulting from disputed transactions or otherwise, balance transfers, and cash advances. Buying flights shouldn’t be counted as ineligible, but the terms also state “Accordingly, certain transactions made with certain merchants may be treated as ineligible to earn Reward Points even if such transactions do not fall within the categories as set out this clause”. So, I’d call ANZ to be sure, if you’re counting on those payments to get you over the line.

Hi Michael, there are actually a lot of cards to choose from. What is the meaning of a $15,000 'minimum' credit limit?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    23 August 2023
Hi Vivienne, good question! The “minimum” credit limit is the lowest possible amount that you may be approved for when you apply for the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black. This is also the spending limit for your credit card. Please note that this limit is determined by the credit card issuer, ANZ in this case, after considering factors such as your credit score, repayment capability, and the like.

Hi Mitch, good question! It seems your other credit card is not issued by ANZ. The terms state that the offer is available to new and approved ANZ Frequent Flyer Black cards. It looks like you may still be eligible for the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card’s current offer provided you meet all the other application requirements.
