The Qantas American Express Discovery Credit Card

So, you’re searching for a Qantas rewards card that offers a great earn rate, no points capping and a heap of useful extras. You also need a 12-month 0% p.a. balance transfer offer – and you don’t want to pay an annual fee, ever.

Surely a card like that doesn’t actually exist, does it?

Why yes it does! Ticking off every single item on that checklist, the Qantas American Express Discovery Credit Card is one very special card indeed. But is it for you? Let’s take a look and find out!

What we love...

One of the most attractive features of the Qantas American Express Discovery Credit Card has to be its points earning potential. Using this card, you can earn 0.75 Qantas Point per $1 on card purchases, except those made at government bodies in Australia, where you’ll earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1.

On top of that, you’ll earn 1 additional Qantas Point per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services within Australia. All with no points capping! The Qantas Points you earn can be redeemed for Classic Flight Rewards with Qantas and more than 50 partner airlines and their affiliates.

While there are plenty of other Qantas rewards cards that offer a similar earn rate (with or without points capping), the difference between those cards and the Qantas American Express Discovery Credit Card is that with the Discovery Card, you pay no annual fee. Ever.

With most cards, you have to look at what you’re going to get back in rewards and features, and compare that to the amount you pay out in annual fees. But with the Discovery Card, you pay nothing out (as long as you avoid other fees and interest), while getting loads back.

What’s not so great...

While we’ve not yet gone into detail about the card’s balance transfer offer, it’s worth pointing out a few factors you may need to know, should you choose to transfer a balance onto this card.

First up, the maximum balance transfer you can be approved for is $10,000 or 70% of your approved credit limit, whichever is less. You will also be expected to pay a one-off credit plan establishment fee of 1% on all balance transfers.

In addition, the card’s purchase rate is sizeable, so to make the most of the features on offer, be sure to pay off the balance each month before it starts attracting interest.

Why should you choose this card?

You may choose this card for its balance transfer offer, so you can enjoy 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 12 months. You may choose it for its Qantas points earning potential, or extras such as 24/7 global customer service, fast global card replacement, four free additional cards, and up to 44 days interest free on purchases.

Or, you may choose this card to take advantage of its purchase and refund protection, and its online fraud protection guarantee. Or quite simply, you may choose this card for all of the above, knowing that you have all of those lovely features, while paying nothing in annual fees.

Overall Rating

A Qantas rewards card with a great earn rate and no points capping, excellent extras and a 12-month 0% p.a. balance transfer offer – all with no annual fees, ever.

Hi Ben, yes you can. Though you need to watch if any surcharges are added. If they are, these could out weigh the points benefits. AMEX are one of the only cards that pay out points for government spend etc.

Hi Yousef, if you have bad credit, it is very hard to get approved for a new credit card. This is not a great card but one of the easier to get approved for. Have a look at the ANZ First. This could be a good starter. Then after 12 months of good use you could look to get a card that more suits your needs.

Hi Dhara, I always suggest a card with no foreign fees. Have a look at the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure credit card. It has no foreign fees. You can also pull out cash from ATMs overseas with no cash advance fees. You get a full suite of insurance products. Overall this is a travelers credit card friend.
