Qantas American Express Discovery Credit Card

Point calculations are accurate as of 23 June 2022 but may be subject to change without notice. All routes may have additional taxes and charges. Check on the official American Express page for the updated calculations.

So, you’re searching for a Qantas rewards card that offers a great earn rate, no points capping and a heap of useful extras. You also don’t want to pay an annual fee, ever.

A card like that couldn’t exist, surely? That’s too much to ask.

Well, welcome to Unicorn Town, because the Qantas American Express Discovery card ticks every box on the wishlist. It’s a pretty special credit card with lots of perks, rewards, and value. But, is it right for you? Let’s take a look.

What we love...

One of the most attractive features of the Qantas American Express Discovery credit card has to be its points earning potential. Using this card, you can earn 0.75 Qantas Points per $1 spent on card purchases, except those made at government bodies in Australia, where you’ll earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1.

On top of that, you’ll earn 1.75 additional Qantas Points per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services within Australia. All with no points capping! The Qantas Points you earn can be redeemed for Classic Flight Rewards with Qantas and more than 50 partner airlines and their affiliates.

Redeem points and use them on eligible flights to over 1,000 destinations worldwide with Qantas and participating airline partners through Classic Flight Rewards. You can fly premium economy from Melbourne to Canberra or Sydney with Qantas for 8,000 points.

While there are plenty of other Qantas rewards cards that offer a similar earn rate (with or without points capping), the difference between those cards and the Qantas American Express Discovery credit card is that with the Discovery card, there’s no annual fee. Nothing, ever.

Usually, you’d have to compare points and features against the annual fee to work out if a card is worth it for you. But, with the Discovery credit card, you’ll pay nothing out (as long as you avoid other fees and interest), while getting loads back in rewards and extras.

What’s not so great...

The card’s purchase rate is sizable, so to make the most of the features on offer, be sure to pay off the balance each month before it starts attracting interest. However, if you can pay the full balance by the due date on each statement, you'll get up to 44 days interest-free on purchases. Even though that’s a shorter interest-free period than other cards, it still gives you plenty of wiggle room to manage your cash flow.

Why should you choose this card?

You may choose this card for its no annual fee feature. You may choose it for its Qantas points earning potential, or extras such as 24/7 global customer service, fast global card replacement, four free additional cards, and up to 44 days interest-free on purchases.

You may also choose this card to take advantage of its Card Refund and Card Purchase Covers, and its online fraud protection guarantee. Or quite simply, you may choose this card for all of the above, knowing that you have all of those versatile features and rewards while paying nothing in annual fees.

Overall Rating

A Qantas rewards card with a great earn rate and no points capping, excellent extras all with no annual fees, ever.

Hi, can you please explain the purchase protection ? Does that mean , if I buy an item and find it cheaper else where I can claim the difference?

Hi Julie, there seems to be confusion. It’s actually the Price Guarantee Cover that you’ve described. Purchase Protection however is a cover provided to purchased eligible items if stolen or accidentally damaged in a set period of time after purchase. Please note that coverage varies and T&Cs do apply.

Unfortunately, As an owner of a sole trader Joondalup Service Providers, I went bankrupt in 2017 due to the downturn in the fishing industry. This affects me personally of course, Joondalup Service Providers is no longer trading, and my current credit score is up to 795. Am I still able to apply for this credit card? I would like to use it to regain some Qantas frequent flyer points, and like the structure of the card. Can you please advice, kind regards, Theo Van De Peppel

Hi Theo, thanks for writing in and sorry to hear about what’s happened to your business. In regards to your question, a credit score is only one of the factors that a provider will look at when assessing your creditworthiness. A credit application requires a clean credit file, with no bankruptcies listed. If you’re keen on earning Qantas points you could consider the Bankwest Qantas Debit Card, or link your Woolworths Rewards card to your Qantas account to earn points. Hope this has helped!

Hi Beryl, there are several options for using your Qantas points. It can be redeemed not only for flights, but flight upgrades, toasters, sunglasses, gift cards all the way through to Qantas merchandise. You might like to check out our complete guide to the Qantas Frequent Flyer rewards program. Pensioners may apply but you will definitely need to meet the eligibility requirements. I suggest checking our comparison tool for a list of credit cards on a pension we have access to. Also, American Express is one of the major issuers accepted almost everywhere. However, you might pay a small fee for the privilege.

Hi Michael, the Amex Qantas Discovery card states that you must have a minimum income of $35,000 p.a. You’ll need to provide evidence of your income and Amex may need to talk to your accountant too as part of the process. Whether you apply or not is up to you. Hope this has helped!

Hi Mary, looking at American Express’ terms and conditions, the bonus points will be added to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account in 8-10 weeks after you’ve met the spend criteria.

Does this credit card give you travel insurance for domestic and overseas travel (I have a Commonwealth Platinum card) that covers my overseas travel
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    6 September 2021
Hi Audrey, I checked on Qantas American Express Discovery Credit Card’s insurance information and only domestic travel insurance is included. You may however reach out to American Express to add an international travel insurance coverage, however it sounds like your CBA has that covered. As always read the PDS of your policy very closely for inclusions and exclusions before jetting off!

Hello, I wanted to check to see if a purchase made with Wise, a money transfer company, would be considered a cash advance or as a purchase. Their merchant category codes are 4829 & 6012. I am considering new Qantas frequent flyer earning credit cards at the moment.
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    2 August 2021
Hi Bonnie, this is a great question. This varies based on what credit card you did the transaction with. As you’ve noted, some charge as cash advance which can accrue interest from the time it is processed. It would be worth contacting your issuer and quoting those merchant codes to find out. Sorry we couldn’t be more specific for you on this matter.
