The Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Credit Card

One of the great things about rewards cards is the fact that you can choose the type of rewards you want to earn. While some cardholders may benefit more from cash back offers and supermarket-based rewards, others prefer earning points as they travel.

Travel rewards cards come in all shapes and sizes, allowing frequent travellers to earn points as they spend, to then redeem those points on flights, accommodation and so much more. But which card to choose?

If you tend to travel with Virgin Australia and its partners, the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card could be a great choice for you. With a decent earn rate and some very nice features, this card is well worth a closer look. So, let’s get into it.

What we love...

One of the first things to mention here is the card’s awesome introductory offers, starting with 0% p.a. on purchases for the first 14 months. If you’ve been comparing credit card options, you’ll know this is a pretty special offer indeed, as it’s not one you’ll find easily elsewhere.

With this 0% p.a. purchase offer, you could purchase your holiday while earning rewards, to then pay it all off within 14 months with no interest to worry about. Sounds pretty good to us!

Got a balance you’d like to transfer from another credit card? This card has that covered too, with 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 14 months. You can transfer up to 80% of your approved credit limit and no balance transfer fee applies. Keep in mind though, that no interest free days apply to your retail purchases while you have a balance transfer.

On top of that, you can receive an exclusive $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher, each year, which can be used on Virgin Australia flights of any fare type (including sale fares), or selected Virgin Australia Holidays packages any time within six months of the voucher’s issue date.

To be eligible for this Gift Voucher, simply make a retail purchase on your card at least two months prior to requesting your voucher. Easy!

What’s not so great...

While the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card certainly has plenty to offer, it’s well worth looking at the small print before using the card. With the 14-month 0% p.a. purchase offer, for example, know that it will revert to the card’s standard purchase rate after the introductory period, which is relatively high within the market. Not so good if you tend to carry a balance each month.

Meanwhile, any balance transfers left unpaid at the end of the 14-month introductory period will revert to the card’s cash advance rate, which like most cards, is substantial. Lastly, there is a considerable annual fee of $129 to take into account. However, it is nice to know that cardholders can look at their $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher as a kind of ‘rebate’ on this fee.

Why should you choose this card?

Aside from the card’s introductory offers, there are some great features that may pique your interest. As a rewards card, the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card lets you earn 0.66 Velocity Points per $1 spent up to $1500 per month, then 0.5 Velocity Points thereafter.

As for features and extras, the card offers transit accident insurance and price guarantee, FraudShield Protection, up to four additional card holders charged at $39 each, and up to 55 days interest free on purchases after the 14-month introductory period ends. As a nice touch, you can also choose to transfer a personal loan balance on the 0% p.a. balance transfer offer.

Overall Rating

A Virgin travel rewards card with a fantastic range of introductory offers, a good earn rate and a decent range of extras. Purchase and balance transfer offers are valid until 31 July 2023.

19 February 2019
Hi Roland, is there any restriction on what counts as 'purchases'? I mean for example can I use the card for any type of purchase (in store, online, overseas etc) and still get the benefit of 0% interest for 14 months? So if I had a balance of 10,000 for 10 months I would pay zero interest but I would have to pay back $200 per month as a minimum? Many thanks, Luke
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    19 February 2019
Hi Luke, any standard purchase would be eligible for the 0% rate. Cash advances would be at the full cash rate. You at least need to pay the minimum as you point out. If you pay your balance down to $0 before the 14 months is up. You will pay no interest. After the intro period, you will only be charged interest on any balance that is left at the time.

I am a disability prensioner. Apparently my credit rating is not good. I am starting a business and sussing out my options for business purchases like, name, micro phone and video ccamera.

Hi Greg, you will need good credit to get approved for a new credit card. What good and bad credit is really defined by the bank you are applying with. If you have any unpaid or paid defaults then its unlikely that you would be approved. This card is a personally card but is great due to the 0% intro rate on purchases. Many cards you would look at in a business name will require 100k income and to be running a certain time. Here are some tips on getting approved for a credit card application.

Hi Ronald, Hope you are doing good. I am planning to apply for Home Loan. I am running short of deposit. My plan is to borrow or shopping 10K & paid within 12 month. In that case should I need to pay any interest or fee. Could You Please roughly how much I have to pay monthly as minimum fee. Cheers, Rajib

    17 May 2018
Hi Rajib, good luck with the pending home loan and property purchase. This card has minimum monthly payments of 2% of the balance. So if you have a $10,000 balance on purchases, then you will need to pay at least $200 a month.
