Queensland Country Bank

Like so many credit unions, Queensland Country Bank started out small, with strong roots within a specific Australian industry. Starting out in Mount Isa as the Isa Mine Employees' Credit Union Limited in 1971, Queensland Country Bank then expanded, with the desire to help all Queenslanders with their banking and lending needs.

Who is Queensland Country Bank?

In April 2018, Queensland Country Credit Union merged with Queenslanders Credit Union to form the second-largest Queensland-based credit union. This merger creates an organisation with assets of almost $2.1 billion, and a network of 33 branches and agencies stretching from Stanthorpe in the south, to Weipa in the north, and Mount Isa to the west.

What does Queensland Country Bank have to offer?

One factor that sets Queensland Country Bank apart from the big banks is the fact that it’s customer-owned. So, when you become a member, you become part-owner. As a part-owner and member, you can expect excellent service, with a greater focus on providing products that benefit you, rather than focusing on external shareholders’ dividends.

Of course, Queensland Country Bank is regulated by the same authority as major banks and offers the same government guarantee to secure your deposits. One of the great things about this bank is the fact that most of the savings deposited are loaned back to customers, creating a diverse asset base that provides strength and security.

Queensland Country Bank offers a range of personal and business products including savings accounts, home loans, savings accounts and foreign exchange. They also have a partnerships in place to offer a range of insurances

Queensland Country Bank Credit Cards

Think Queensland Country Bank could be for you? If you like what you see from this organisation as a whole, we should really look closer at what it has to offer in terms of credit cards.

While the Queensland Country Bank credit card range is not exactly huge, it still has plenty to offer. If you want an affordable card with valuable features, the Queensland Country Visa Credit Card may just have everything you want in a credit card, with a low-interest rate and annual fee, up to 55 days interest-free, and a rewards program you’ll actually use.

Interest

When thinking about how much a credit card will cost, it’s a good idea to look at the rate of interest on purchases and cash advances. If you tend to carry a balance and are not always able to pay off your card in full each month, the card’s purchase rate becomes especially important.

With its focus on value, the Queensland Country Visa Credit Card has a nice low purchase rate and cash advance rate. So, if you get stuck for cash one month and cannot clear your balance in full, this card could help save you on interest. In the long term though, even with a low rate card, it’s recommended you pay off your card whenever possible, to avoid unnecessary interest charges.

When you clear your balance each statement period, you can enjoy an additional benefit on this card, with up to 55 days interest-free on purchases. So, if you have a larger purchase in mind, you can use this feature to provide you with a little more breathing space before interest starts accruing. Check the small print to ensure you know how this feature works first though!

It’s also worth pointing out that while cash advances have the same low rate as purchases, there is no interest-free period when you take out a cash advance. There may also be fees and charges to take into account as well, so in general, it’s best to avoid cash advances on credit cards at all times.

Annual Fees

The Queensland Country Visa Credit Card is not just a low-rate credit card – it also happens to be a low-fee credit card, charging a low annual fee for its use. This can make it the perfect option for cardholders who want a simple card with accessible features, at the lowest possible cost.

Looking for something more on your credit card? One of the great things about the Queensland Country Visa Credit Card is that it can be customised to suit the needs of the cardholder. If you want a simple credit card for a low annual fee, you can opt for the standard Queensland Country Visa Credit Card.

Alternatively, if you want something extra, like a rewards program, you can opt-in for the Rewarder program as a Queensland Country Visa Credit Card holder. All you need to do is pay the opt in Rewarder annual fee and you can earn points on your everyday spending, to receive cashback to spend as you like.

Rewards Program

Unlike other rewards programs, the Rewarder program keeps it simple. With other rewards programs, you may have a tiered earn rate, where certain purchases earn more points than others. When it comes to redeeming the points you earn, other rewards programs may limit you to items within a brochure, or gift cards for specific retailers.

Not so with Rewarder. This is a rewards program that rewards you with points for every dollar you spend on your credit card, and those points are then returned to you in real money. So, for every $1 you spend on your Queensland Country Visa Credit Card, you will receive 1 Rewarder Point. For every 150 Rewarder points you earn, you will receive $1 back.

Your Rewarder points are automatically credited to your Rewarder account on a monthly basis, where your accumulated points are converted into a dollar amount. Then, simply use your Rewarder Loyalty card anywhere in Australia where EFTPOS is accepted.

There are no gift cards or silly brochure items to worry about. Simply use your points on real things – things you actually want. Whether that’s a coffee with friends, a romantic dinner with your partner, or a little shopping spree all to yourself, as long as you can pay with EFTPOS, you can use your Rewarder points to cover it.

However, it is worth bearing in mind that as with any rewards card, the Queensland Country Visa Credit Card with Rewards works best for big spenders. If you spend $2,000 a month on your card, you would earn $160 to spend on your Rewarder Loyalty Card each year. But, you have the annual fee to consider as well. So, if you spend more, you’ll obviously make the card more worthwhile.

Features

When comparing the features on offer on the Queensland Country Visa Credit Card, it’s worth remembering that this is a low-cost card. When it comes to credit cards, cards that have low annual fees and interest generally offer fewer features. So, if you want a card that offers airport lounge access, a personal concierge service and premium hotel perks, you better look elsewhere.

However, the Queensland Country Visa Credit Card still offers the basics, with several valuable features on board. Here are some of the standard Visa Features on offer:

  • Visa payWave: This time-saving feature allows you to pay for items under $100 when you are at the checkout. This can help save time, allowing you to ‘tap and go’ and get on your way.
  • Visa Entertainment: As a Queensland Country Visa Credit Card holder, you have access to exclusive entertainment experiences through Visa Entertainment. Simply register to receive info on the latest offers, giving you access to the most exciting concerts, cinema and sporting events.
  • Verified by Visa: Another Visa service you can register for is Verified by Visa. This allows you to add a password to your account, which must be entered when making a purchase online at participating retailers. By authenticating your identity, can help make shopping online that little bit safer.
  • Visa Zero Liability Policy: As a Visa cardholder, it’s nice to know you have backup, in the form of Visa’s Zero Liability Policy. This service protects you against unauthorised transactions, and works as a guarantee from Visa that you will not be liable for any unauthorised transactions made as a result of card fraud or stolen cards.

Any other features to be aware of? You can add additional cardholders to the account at no extra cost. If you opt in for the Rewarder program, this could help you earn points even faster, for even bigger cashback rewards.

Access

When you apply for a credit card, you want to be certain you can actually use it. Fortunately, thanks to its Visa logo, the Queensland Country Visa Credit Card can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. So, that means you can use your card at more than 1.4 million ATMs and at 29 million merchants in 170 countries.

Of course, you can also use you card to shop online, to make payments over the phone or online, and to pay bills using BPAY. Want to keep a close eye on your account? With phone banking and online banking available, you will have access to your account 24/7.

Eligibility

Before applying for a credit card, it’s always best to check the card’s eligibility requirements. Some card providers require an exceptional credit history and a high minimum income, while other card providers are much more lenient.

If you want to apply for the Queensland Country Visa Credit Card, you will need to become a member of Queensland Country Bank. Members must be over the age of 18, must be a permanent resident of Australia, and must currently live in Australia. If you’re not yet a member, you will need to open a membership as part of your application.

Keep in mind that if you want to add an additional cardholder to your account, additional cardholders must be 16 years or over.

Where did Queensland Country Bank come from?

Want to know more about Queensland Country Bank? When it comes to smaller financial institutions such as credit unions, it can be nice to know more about where they came from before trusting them with our money. While we all know plenty about big banks such as Westpac and NAB, smaller organisations such as Queensland Country Bank may not be as familiar.

Starting out as the Isa Mine Employees’ Credit Union Limited back in the 1970s, this little outfit grew out of a community call to support the basic banking and small lending needs of employees of the mine and its related companies. By the end of the decade, the credit union expanded to offer the same services to then-Pioneer Sugar in North Queensland.

Expanding over the years, Queensland Country Bank eventually opened up membership to the public, to develop its range of financial products and services to what’s on offer today. Today, Queensland Country Bank is here to help all hardworking regional Queenslanders achieve their goals, offering everything from loans and credit cards, to bank accounts and insurance.

Why choose Queensland Country Bank?

If you’re still considering your options, here are some great reasons why Queensland Country Bank could be the credit card provider for you.

  • Queensland Country Bank is 100% customer-owned: That means, when you become a cardholder, you also receive a membership share in the business.
  • Queensland Country Bank believes in responsible banking: That means community development and personal growth matter.
  • Queensland Country Bank trusts in community partnerships: That means this is an organisation that is committed to working with not-for-profit organisations to provide a cost-effective way to do banking.
  • Queensland Country Bank is people-focused: That means this organisation likes to sponsor local events that offer benefit to the community, while supporting people to get involved.
