The St.George Amplify Platinum Credit Card - Qantas

Offering 70,000 bonus Qantas Points plus 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 24 months to new cardholders, the St.George Amplify Platinum Credit Card is a great find. Providing cardholders an earn rate of 0.5 Qantas Points on all eligible card spending at home and overseas, the card also offers a handy selection of features, including travel insurance and extended warranty insurance.

Point calculations are accurate as of 09 May 2024 but may be subject to change without notice. All routes may have additional taxes and charges. Check on the official St.George page for the updated calculations.

What we love...

Doing exactly what an introductory offer is supposed to do, that 70,000 bonus Qantas Points offer can’t help but catch the eye. All you need to do to be eligible is apply and be approved by 31 July 2024, and then use the card to spend $3,000 or more on eligible purchases within the first 90 days to get 60,000 Qantas points and an extra 10,000 points when you keep your account open for more than 12 months and continue to use your card.

With that bonus points offer in your pocket, you could fly from Sydney to San Francisco by redeeming 41,900 Qantas Points. Alternatively, you could choose to use those points at the Qantas Store, redeeming 51,850 Qantas Points for a $250 JB Hi-Fi gift card, or 54,550 Qantas Points for a $250 Woolworths Group gift card.

It’s worth bearing in mind that this offer is not available to existing customers who currently hold an Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature card issued by St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA, or who have held one in the past 12 months.

As for everyday points earning, the St.George Amplify Platinum Credit Card allows you to earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 up to a maximum of $100,000 spent on eligible purchases per year. Take note, no points are earned on purchases from or payments to a government or government-related agency, but you may earn extra points on purchases with Qantas Frequent Flyer Program partners. Here, you earn once with your card and once with the program partner.

With this St.George Amplify Platinum Credit Card, you are choosing to earn on the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. This allows you to earn more points on Qantas purchases while enjoying rewards such as flights and upgrades with Qantas and its partner airlines, and more than 3,000 products, experiences and vouchers from Qantas Store.

If you need to move over an existing credit card debt, the St.George Amplify Platinum comes with 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 24 months. 1% balance transfer fee applies. This offer is for new cards only. The long interest-free period can give you enough time to pay off your entire balance without worrying about being charged interest.

What’s not so great...

As with most rewards cards, the St.George Amplify Platinum Credit Card has a relatively high rate of interest on cash advances. However, you can stop this from becoming an issue as long as you avoid cash advances, and clear your balance by the due date each statement period. Please take note that the balance transfer offer rate will revert to the cash advance rate, thus cardholders should add it up to the list of things to be cautious about.

As of July 2023, St.George has introduced an annual $75 Qantas Rewards fee if you earn Qantas Points through the Amplify Qantas rewards program.

Some cardholders may not be overly impressed with the card’s earn rate. For a reasonable standard annual fee of $124, cardholders of the St.George Amplify Card enjoy the same earn rate but that entry-level card does not have the 70,000 bonus Qantas Points offer or the insurance covers that this card has. So if these features are important to you, the Platinum edition may be the best option.

Why should you choose this card?

If you want to earn rewards on Qantas purchases and everyday spending, the St.George Amplify Platinum Credit Card could be a great choice. It offers a decent points earn, with the ability to earn points faster day-to-day, with one additional cardholder at no extra cost.

On top of that, you can benefit from complimentary travel insurance and extended warranty insurance, covering items purchased on the card up to 12 months past the standard manufacturer's warranty.

With the card’s travel insurance, you, your spouse and dependent children are provided cover on trips up to three months, as long you’ve spent at least $500 on each traveller’s travel costs, and you have a return travel ticket before leaving Australia. Cover provided included unlimited medical cover, loss or damage to personal property up to a maximum $20,000 for a family, plus travel cancellation cover, rental vehicle excess up to $5,000, and more.

Overall Rating

A handy rewards card that allows you to earn Qantas Points on Qantas purchases and everyday spending, the St.George Amplify Platinum Credit Card really sets itself apart with its 70,000 bonus Qantas Points and its complimentary insurance covers.

Hi Pauline, Eligible purchases do not include a purchase from or payment to a local, state or federal government related agency, BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay) In regard of the above, how about my car renewal payment to RTA and inruance payments, are they eligible purchase? Regards

Hi Lisa! Lenders are a little vague about eligible transactions. It's likely a payment to the RTA would be ineligible because its a government agency, but a payment to your insurer may be eligible because it's a private business. You might have to ask St.George directly to clarify. Thanks Lisa!

Does the additional card holder also get 60,000 points if $3000 is spent on that card in 3 months

Hi Andrew, great question! Having an additional cardholder doesn’t mean they will have a separate ANZ account to earn points. It will however, help you as the primary cardholder reach the spend limit faster, earn more points, and other benefits. Here’s a good read about additional cardholders and rewards. Remember that you’ll be responsible for paying back the balance your additional cardholder accrues.

I dont currently have a frequent flyer account, but want to set one up so I can apply for a St George Amplify Platinum credit card. One of the rewards with this card is that the joining fee to become a Frequent Flyer member of Qantas is waived. How do I apply for the card and join Qantas Frequent Flyers without having to pay the joining fee?

Hi Samantha, checking the terms, A joining fee usually applies, but for a limited time St.George has arranged for this to be waived for new Amplify cardholders who are not already members and who choose to link their card to Amplify Qantas (limit of one complimentary membership per new account). For more information on the Qantas Frequent Flyer program visit www.qantas.com/fflyer or call 13 11 31. Bottom line, they are providing the Qantas account at no cost. I assume in the application process, you can select to have one setup.
