Citi Premier Qantas Credit Card Review

A card designed for the frequent flyer, the Citi Premier Qantas Credit Card includes a 80,000 bonus point offer plus, 0% p.a. for 6 months on purchases and balance transfers. You’ll need to spend $4,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days after application to unlock the bonus points. This card repays online spending, giving a decent rewards rate of 1 Qantas point for $1 spent online. The annual fee is discounted to $175 if you spend $48,000 in the previous year, otherwise, it’s bumped up to $350, making it a high-tier premier credit card that you’ll need to weigh up before deciding if it works out for you.

What we love…

It’s hard to look past a hefty bonus point offer, which makes the Citi Premier Qantas credit card a decent option for anyone wanting to boost their frequent flyer miles. Additionally, this card's 0% p.a. for 6 months on purchases and balance transfers introductory offers can work well for those who are looking to save on interest on their everyday spending and those working on clearing existing balances.

Let’s look at what else it has to offer.

Plenty of extra perks

Citi offers its cardholders some great bonus features. You can get $10 cashback every month when you spend $25 or more in one transaction with Deliveroo each month. The retailers and offers are subject to change. Offer ends 30 June 2022.

The Citi Premier Qantas credit card has a number of travel and entertainment perks, including a free Priority Pass that offers two complimentary airport lounge visits per year. You’ll also get free international travel insurance that may cover you for cancelled flights, and lost, damaged or stolen personal items.

This card has other premium benefits, like its 24/7 concierge services, that put the annual fee price point in the high-tier bracket.

The good news is that you can earn a 50% discount on your annual fee when you spend $48,000 each year on your Citi Premier Qantas credit card. If you miss the mark, you’ll pay $350.

Qantas points earnings are capped at 100,000 per year, but points earned through CitiPayAll transactions are uncapped.

What’s not so great…

The rewards points you can earn are good, especially with the 80,000 bonus point offer, but you’ll need to weigh up whether the Qantas points will work for the way you shop.

You’ll earn 1 Qantas Point for every $1 you spend either internationally, or domestically online. Otherwise, your points earn drop to 0.5 for every $1 spent. So, the maximum rewards are earned by those who do a lot of travelling and online shopping.

If you have a balance transfer, you won’t be eligible for the 55 days interest-free until the balance transfer is paid down.

Why should you choose this card?

The Citi Premier Qantas credit card is a good way to earn straight-up Qantas points on everyday spending for travel and adventure, if that’s your goal. The 80,000 introductory sign-up offer is an excellent leg-up for cheap travel, as long as you’re able to meet the offer requirements and spend $4,000 within 90 days of card approval. The handshake with retail partners that give cashback and discounts are a big (and pretty fun) bonus.

  • Earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 on all eligible online transactions
  • Earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 on all eligible international transactions made overseas or online with a merchant that is based overseas
  • Earn 0.5 Qantas Point per $1 on all eligible domestic transactions
  • Earn uncapped 0.5 Qantas Point per $1 on all eligible transactions using Citi PayAll
Redeeming your points:

Qantas Points can be redeemed through your Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership Points can go towards flights, hotels, shopping, dining and car hire.

Overall Rating

The Citi Premier Qantas Credit Card gives you a big boost of points at the front end, with a reasonably simple minimum spend to unlock the 80,000 Qantas Points. It does have a premium annual fee, but you can earn a discount just by doing your regular shopping and hitting a minimum yearly spend on your card.

After I get the 100,000 bonus Qantas Points, am I allowed to apply another Citi card that earns bonus Krislyer miles? Other banks seem to always have a clause saying that you are not eligible for another card if you are currently holding or have held another card in the past 12 months. Does Citi have that rule? Thanks.

Hi Kim, we don't have an active partnership to this card yet, but I checked Westpac Flex card’s terms and it states that the Flex card can only be issued to an individual cardholder. That means no secondary cardholder can be added. If you’re keen to have a secondary cardholder on your card, you can use our comparison tool to view the cards that allow you to add free additional cardholders.

Can you please explain more about 'eligible domestic and international transactions'. Does it basically mean that payment of things like groceries or domestic hotels, flights etc... would only earn 0.5 pts per $1?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    3 May 2022
Hi Shaun, I checked Citi Premier Qantas card’s terms and it does not state which transactions are considered eligible. It says however that transactions like cash advances, balance transfers, interests, fees, chargebacks, special promotions and the like are not considered eligible. According to the terms, transactions you make ‘online’ and transactions you make on ‘international spend’ will earn 1 point for every $1, then 0.5 point for every $1 spent on domestic transactions. You can check on Citi’s official rewards program terms and conditions PDF or give them a call directly for further information.

I am hoping to use this card to transfer the balance of an existing AMEX. If I transfer the balance does that mean that interest is payable on every purchase or would I still get the opportunity to have purchases interest free if I pay the Citi balance off in full at the end of every month?

Hi Sahar, you may request for a balance transfer. However, interest free days do not apply to purchases while you have a balance transfer.

Hi Pauline, am I able to apply for one of these rewards cards through my company? So I can make purchases for the company, but have the points go to my qantas rewards account? I notice that upon application it is for the individual not the business. how can I do that so that even my partner can make a business purchase using the card? Thank you!

Hi Ash, we can’t recommend one card over another, we do have a comparison page of credit cards with free travel insurance. You can sort by annual fee and to see cards that have travel insurance that might be right for you. For context, the only card in our database that we have access to that has complimentary domestic travel insurance is the HSBC Low Rate Credit Card. Safe travels!

Hi Bruce, each credit card has it’s pros and cons, and what is a better option for you comes down to how you use it. The Citi Premier card comes with a whole range of extras that could make it a worthwhile card, including deliveroo and Spotify discounts and a reduced annual fee for spending. You’ll have to weigh up whether you want a points cap or a half point earnt for spending domestically and the differences in annual fees when comparing. If you click “save card” on your options you can compare them side by side. Hope this has helped, let us know how you go!

    22 November 2021
Hi Tamara, Qantas do not publish a list of what an eligible transaction is. Anecdotally these are typically your everyday transactions like filling up your car at a petrol station, spending on your groceries and eating out at restaurants. Ineligible transactions include (but aren;t limited to) cash advances, balance transfers and BPAY payments.
