CommBank Yello guide: tiers, points and rewards explained

Last updated

Pauline Hatch

CommBank Yello is CommBank’s rewards and recognition program, giving eligible customers points, offers and perks across more of their banking. Since 1 October 2026, it’s also the home of the bank’s expanded points program, but holding a credit card alone doesn’t guarantee access.

⛔

Check eligibility before counting on rewards. You need an eligible transaction account and must meet the program’s requirements to earn and redeem through Yello. A shiny points balance isn’t much help if you can’t use it.

Key numbers

  • 4 tiers: Yello, Plus, Gold and Diamond.
  • 5 completed eligible transactions: the base tier’s monthly transaction requirement.
  • Monthly assessment: your previous month’s activity determines eligibility.
  • 2 years: the normal points expiry period after your last earning or redemption activity.

Methodology: program rules checked against CommBank’s program page, FAQs and terms on 16 October 2026; card details checked against our current review.

What is CommBank Yello, and what happened to Awards?

Yello combines points with benefits such as discounts and ticket presales. Eligible customers can earn through selected banking products and participating offers, then choose from available rewards. It’s broader than a credit card points scheme, although individual products and offers have their own rules.

CommBank closed its Awards program on 29 September 2026. For eligible customers, remaining Awards points converted to Yello points at one for one. That preserves the number of points, not necessarily what they buy. Our guide to the former CommBank Awards program explains the previous scheme; this guide focuses on Yello.

Who qualifies for CommBank Yello?

Generally, you must be at least 18, have an Australian residential address, hold an eligible CommBank transaction account and meet a tier’s requirements. Eligible accounts include Smart Access, Complete Access, Everyday Offset and Streamline Basic, alongside certain pensioner and private banking accounts.

You’re generally enrolled automatically when eligible. Check your access in the latest CommBank app by tapping CBA Yello. The bank assesses the previous calendar month’s activity, so benefits may not appear the day you qualify.

Tier Usual monthly transaction requirement Additional balance or home loan requirement
Yello 5 or more No additional tier balance requirement
Plus 15 or more $500 eligible balance for at least 15 days; balance requirement waived if under 26
Gold 15 or more $50,000 eligible balance for at least 15 days, or eligible combined funded home loans below $1 million
Diamond 15 or more $250,000 eligible balance for at least 15 days, or eligible combined funded home loans of at least $1 million

An eligible transaction account is required for every tier. Special rules apply, including a transaction exemption for Gold or Diamond where an eligible home loan settled in the previous month. Check the full Yello terms for qualifying balances, transactions and ongoing access.

How do you earn Yello points?

You may earn through eligible card purchases, selected banking or insurance products, travel bookings and participating offers. Some rewards are automatic; others require activation or a particular booking or payment route. Read the offer before spending, including its minimum purchase, exclusions and payment timeframe.

For an example of card earning, the CommBank Ultimate Credit Card earns 0.5, 0.75, 1 or 1.5 Yello points per $1 on other eligible transactions at the Yello, Plus, Gold and Diamond tiers respectively. Different rates apply to international spending and certain bookings.

CommBank Ultimate Credit Card

On an illustrative $1,000 of spending in that ordinary eligible-purchase category, those rates produce 500 points at Yello or 1,500 at Diamond. The calculation is $1,000 multiplied by the relevant earn rate. It isn’t a reason to spend more or move your home loan: fees and borrowing costs still matter.

What are Yello points worth?

There isn’t one fixed dollar value. CommBank’s published examples show why it’s useful to compare the reward before redeeming:

Example reward Yello points required Value per point
$50 Myer gift card 12,500 0.40 cents
$100 off an eligible Travel Booking flight, hotel or car 16,667 ~0.60 cents

We calculated cents per point as reward dollars divided by points, multiplied by 100. These are selected examples, subject to availability and current redemption conditions, rather than a promise of value across the program.

Selected Yello redemptions: Myer gift card value of 0.4 cents per point and Travel Booking value of approximately 0.6 cents per point

Yello Points: Reward Values

  • Myer gift card: A $50 gift card requires 12,500 Yello points, giving a value of 0.4 cents per point ($50 ÷ 12,500 × 100).
  • Travel Booking: $100 off an eligible flight, hotel or car requires 16,667 Yello points, giving a value of approximately 0.6 cents per point ($100 ÷ 16,667 × 100).

These are selected reward examples. Availability and redemption conditions apply, so compare the value before using your points.

Airline transfers add another calculation: the transfer ratio, any participation fee and the flight you can actually book. Don’t treat a Yello point as equal to a Qantas or Velocity point. See CommBank’s current redemption FAQs before choosing.

What catches should you check?

Costs can outweigh rewards. Compare account and card fees, interest and any transfer fees with benefits you’ll actually use. Our CommBank card comparison and rewards card comparison can help you consider alternatives.

Card benefits have separate conditions. For example, the Ultimate card’s monthly fee waiver based on spending at least $4,000 in a statement period ends on 1 January 2027. Travel and dining credits also have usage and expiry rules; their advertised value isn’t automatically cash saved.

Points need attention. Under the normal rule, earning or redeeming resets the two-year expiry clock. Closing accounts, opting out or losing eligibility can affect access, so check the terms before making changes.

⭐

Pauline’s tip: Start with the banking products you need, then work out whether the rewards add value. Don’t build your budget around a perk you wouldn’t otherwise buy.

“The useful reward is the one you’ll use without spending more to get it.”

Four checks before chasing CommBank Yello points: eligibility, tier, redemption value and costs

Check before you chase Yello points

  1. Check eligibility. An eligible transaction account is required.
  2. Check your tier. Your tier can change how many points you earn.
  3. Compare rewards. The same points balance can buy different value.
  4. Subtract the costs. Count account fees, card fees and interest.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a credit card to use CommBank Yello?

No. Eligibility starts with an eligible transaction account and the other program requirements. A credit card is one possible way to earn points, rather than a requirement for every member.

Is CommBank Yello the same as CommBank Awards?

No. Awards closed on 29 September 2026. Yello is the current program, with its own eligibility, earning and redemption rules.

Does a higher Yello tier guarantee better value?

No. Higher benefits can be outweighed by the costs of the products you hold. Compare the full cost with rewards you expect to use.

Final tips

Yello is worth exploring if you’re already an eligible customer. Check your tier, choose offers that match planned spending and compare redemption value before using points. Keeping the underlying banking affordable matters more than collecting a bigger balance.

General information only, without considering your objectives, financial situation or needs. Read the applicable Target Market Determination (TMD), product terms and conditions and Yello terms before deciding. Card details are correct as at 16 October 2026 and can change.
