Overall Rating

A refresh of the Amex Gold Business Card, the Amex Business Gold Plus Card has been updated with new features that can help save money and make business easier. While the annual fee has gone up, it delivers a lot more in return: bonus points on your spending, credit back to your account when you spend with with selected merchants, travel benefits and tools to streamline your accounts.

Editor’s Review: What I love about the American Express Business Gold Plus Card

The new features have given this card a nice boost. Let's start with the bonus points and the points you can earn on your spending, which Amex has dubbed accelerated earning because you can earn bonus points with particular purchases.

Bonus points: The 150,000 Amex Membership Rewards points are earned when you spend at least $5000 on eligible purchases using your Amex Business Gold Plus Card within 3 months of your approval date. This offer ends 11 February 2025. Points are awarded to the primary cardholder 8 to 10 weeks after you've met the criteria. Just note this offer is only available if you haven't held an Amex card in the preceding 18 months. Other terms and conditions apply.

Accelerated points per dollar:

Earn 3 points per $1 spent at Xero, Google Ads, Meta, Amazon Web Services and Dell.
⚡ Transactions made through a 3rd party platform or an aggregator may not be eligible for accelerated points earn.

Earn 2 points per $1 spent with AccessLine, which allows you to pay suppliers even if they don't accept card.
⚡ Your business needs to be approved and enrolled in AccessLine by completing an application with American Express.

Earn 1.5 points per $1 on everyday spending.
⚡ Everyday spending is spend everywhere else, except government transactions. Employee cards earn points at the same rate as the primary cardholder.

Earn 1 point per $1 spent on government spend, including the ATO.
⚡ Amex states that merchants classified as "government" include the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Postal Corporation, Federal/State and Local government bodies.

Note: Once your account has earned a total of 200,000 points in a calendar year (including points earned on employee cards), earning accelerated points stops and you'll earn 1 point for every $1 across all categories. The 200,000 points threshold resets every year on 1 January (not when your card renews). Points are uncapped and have no expiry date, which is a nice bonus. The 150,000 bonus points don't count towards the 200k threshold.

Other business extras and perks

This charge card is very B2B-focused and gives you a number of ways to save money or simplify your accounts. I'll start by outlining the $100 credit back to your account when you spend with eligible merchants, then look at other business features.

How does the $100 credit work?
Each calendar year, you'll earn $100 credit back to your account on these brands when you spend $100 in one or more transactions online. Your $100 can be made up of multiple smaller transactions (for example, 2 x $50). You can use this benefit once every calendar year until the benefit ends on 31 December 2026. The credit resets every year on 1 January.

The $100 credit back to your account is available when you spend and meet the spend criteria with the following merchants:

  • Xero
  • Google Ads
  • Meta
  • Amazon Web Services

In the same vein, you can earn up to $75 back twice a year (once every 6 months between January and June, then July and December) when you upgrade your tech with Dell Technologies. You'll need to enrol to be eligible for this benefit.

Cash flow tools
To help manage your money, you can extend the time between purchases and payment by up to 55 days each statement period. As a charge card, there is no interest applied, unless you choose to use Amex's Flexible Payment Option (FPO). FPO allows you to free-up your cash flow with an instant line of credit. You can choose what portion of your balance to pay off over time1 (up to your FPO Credit Limit) and how long you’d like to take to pay it back. Interest charges apply, as well as other terms and conditions.

This charge card also comes with Pay Any Supplier functionality (called AccessLine), to make payments easier. You need to apply and be approved to use this feature.

Add employee cards
The first 2 additional cards are complimentary, and then you'll pay $75 p.a. for employee cards after that. You can set spending limits, check on individual spending and lock cards, as well as earn points. Employee cards are made from recycled plastic, while the metal card is reserved for the primary cardholder.

Travel extras

The travel extras revolve around hotels, car hire and insurance. Here's what's included:

Travel insurance
This card comes with complimentary domestic and international travel insurance, which includes flight inconvenience cover and public transport accident cover. To be eligible, you'll need to meet the eligibility terms and conditions laid out in the insurance PDS. There are exclusions such as maximum age-limits, pre-existing medical conditions and cover limits, so read the terms and conditions first.

The Hilton Honors Silver Status
You'll receive a complimentary membership to enrol in Hilton Honors Silver status, which lets you earn points and enjoy other privileges and benefits at eligible hotels and resorts around the world.

The Hotel Collection
When you book a minimum two-night stay at any one of hundreds of eligible hotels through American Express Online Travel, you'll get a US$100 credit to use during your stay. Depending on the hotel, you could also get 12pm check-in, late check-out and a room upgrade upon arrival if available.

Hertz car hire
You can join the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards loyalty program and get exclusive benefits at participating locations worldwide. Benefits can include up to 10% discount, a waived fee for a spouse or civil partner, and one car class upgrade when you book for more than 5 consecutive days (subject to availability).

Redeeming rewards points

Amex says its Membership Rewards points can be redeemed for almost anything, and they're not wrong. You can use your points for:

Travel: redeem points using Amex Travel Online for hotels, car hire and flights with a number of global partner airlines including Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

Cover Charges with Points: nominate a purchase on your card to be paid with points and the transaction amount is credited back to your account.

Gift cards: choose from a range of retailers such as Accor Hotels, Amazon, Bunnings, Coles, JB Hi-Fi, Westfield and more.

Shop with Points Online: redeem points online with participating brands including Apple, Dell Technologies, Flight Centre, The Good Guys and Webjet.

What’s not so great

At this point, the $100 annual credit back to your account with selected businesses perk offer expires on 31 December 2026. And, you'll pay $75 per employee card after the first 2 (which are complimentary), which could add up if you have a larger staff.

After you've earned 200,000 points in a calendar year, your earn rate drops to 1 point per $1 across all categories. However, that's still a great earn rate and compares well with other business credit cards.

Who suits the Amex Business Gold Plus Card?

With its focus on B2B perks and travel-related benefits, the Amex Business Gold Plus Card can help small, medium and large businesses. You'll get the most value out of the card if you can use its money-saving perks, such as getting up to $550 credit back to your account with partnering merchants. But, the accelerated points earning that Amex offers on this card can also be a great way to help offset business costs and keep your accounts simple and streamlined.

Hi Rojin, I haven’t come across anything that says you can use points for flights after you’ve booked them. I’d suggest calling your airline directly to see what they say. Thanks Rojin, enjoy your trip!

Hello, What credit card/ charge card should I get before I apply for AMEX Gold. I heard that you can’t upgrade from credit to charge(?) or cashback to charge card. It’d be great if you can provide ways of upgrading to AMEX Gold! Thank you.

Hi Jake, good question! Although we cannot recommend one card over another, there are different credit cards to choose from depending on your planned usage. I checked on American Express’ terms and can’t see any mentions about being able to upgrade to a charge card from a regular credit card. Each card will need its own credit application. So if you’re keen to get an American Express credit card, you can use our comparison tool. If you believe you’ve met the eligibility for the American Express Gold Business card, you can apply by clicking the green Go To Offer button at the top of this page. Please also read the card’s terms, conditions and TMD before proceeding with your application.

Hi, I’m just wondering how many rewards points go towards ATO and government payments. Also, to what ratio is (Rewards = Qantas) points? Many thanks

    5 November 2021
Hi Mick, according to American Express’ terms and conditions, you’ll earn 1 point per $1 on all ATO and government payments, then 1.5 points per $1 on every spend. When you’re redeeming points, your 2 membership rewards points are equivalent to 1 Qantas point.

Thank you for your answers. Just one more question - we would like a $40,000 limit with the Amex Qantas Discovery card. Is this possible?

    4 January 2019
Hi Sue, the maximum possible credit limit on the AMEX Qantas Discovery goes as high as $100,000. Therefore it could be possible for you to obtain a 40k credit limit. You can request the 40k limit at the time you apply. AMEX will access and assign your credit limit based on the information provided. Happy Friday and best of luck with your application.

We are looking for a credit card where we can earn points for the Qatar qmiles reward program. We have cards earning Qantas ff points. Also interested in one which gives points for ATO payments. Not interested in paying a large annual fee.

Hi Sue, Qatar is part of One World. Therefore you can use your Qantas Points for Qatar flights. There is no direct Qatar rewards points earning credit card in Australia. For earning points on the ATO, this is really limited to AMEX cards. Therefore based on that, have a look at the AMEX Qantas Ultimate. I have this card. Its earn rate is currently 1.5 per $1 which is dropping to 1.25. Though its still the highest Qantas point earner in the market. You will also earn 0.5 points per dollar with the ATO. If you want to pay no annual fee then the Qantas American Express Discovery. Let me know if you would like a non-AMEX option. If you could provide how much you spend a month that can help me provide suggestions.
