Trust is important to People’s Choice. In fact, People’s Choice’s vision is to be the most trusted financial services provider in Australia. How does it plan on doing this? Well, for one thing, People’s Choice is a mutual, which means it is owned by its members. With a promise to never prioritise profits over the needs of its members, this is a credit union dedicated to working with its members for a better future.
So, what exactly does it have to offer?
With a strong belief that building strong communities benefits us all, community is at the heart of everything People's Choice does.
Its People’s Choice Community Lottery has returned almost $20 million to more than 1,500 not-for-profit organisations across South Australia, Victoria, the Northern Territory and the ACT.
It has formed corporate social responsibility partnerships with Cancer Council SA and HeartKids, and is a proud sponsor of the Adelaide Strikers, Western Bulldogs and People's Choice BASSINTHEGRASS.
It encourages employee fundraising and volunteering, with more than $175,000 raised, and 8,000 hours volunteered by hundreds of staff.
It also funds smaller local community initiatives at the branch level.
People's Choice is the first Australian financial institution to receive accreditation as a White Ribbon Workplace. With a workforce that comprises of around 70% women, it believes it has a responsibility to Stand Up, Speak Out and Act to raise awareness, both within the workplace and across the community.
Being a mutual means members of People’s Choice have a share in the organisation, which also means they have a say in how the business is run. As a member, you can stand to be a Director, elect office bearers, and vote on constitutional changes at the Annual General Meeting.
Members can also have their say in the People’s Choice Green Room. This online forum offers important info on where the credit union is going, allowing members to share thoughts and feedback, while also enjoying the opportunity to win prizes and connect with the People’s Choice team in a way that hasn’t previously been available.
One of the many benefits of being part of a mutual is that People’s Choice is about people, not profit. Instead of always thinking about the bottom line and passing profits on to external shareholders, it’s People’s Choice’s members than benefit. Here, profits can be re-invested to offer members better rates and lower fees.
People’s Choice has seen plenty of recognition over the years, winning awards across a number of categories. Roy Morgan named People’s Choice the country’s best credit union in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018, while Canstar chose People’s Choice as Australia’s best customer-owned institution of the year for first homebuyers in Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Priding itself on being friendly, honest and easy to deal with, People’s Choice aims to offer the best customer service available. Providing personalised service, People’s Choice can make you feel heard, helping you find the very best option to help you reach your financial goals.
Offering a genuine alternative to the major banks, People’s Choice has origins that date all the way back to 1949. Growing significantly over the years to become a trusted financial services provider and a leader in the credit union industry, People’s Choice Credit Union was created through the merger of Australian Central and Savings & Loans in December 2009.
With 375,000 members across Australia and branches in South Australia, Northern Territory, Victoria, Western Australia and Australian Capital Territory, People’s Choice is one of Australia’s largest credit unions. It has almost 1,000 employees and around $10.7 billion in funds under management and advice.
Just like the big banks, People’s Choice is regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) as an Authorised Deposit-taking Institution (ADI). That means it is subject to and complies with the same stringent prudential standards as every Australian bank.
Think that People’s Choice sounds like it might be for you? You can become a member of People’s Choice either by visiting one of its branches, by calling its National Contact Centre or by visiting a Bank@Post outlet.
