Very disappointed from October 2016 Jetstar are destroying their Platinum Card due to severe limits for big card spenders. The card is not worth getting now. Very disappointed, I had the card from 2013, but when my renewal comes up Sayonara Jetstar!

If you fly Jetstar a lot this is a good card. You don’t get charged booking fees when you use the card to book Jetstar flights. You can choose between earning Jetstar dollars or Qantas Frequent Flyer points – depending on who you use the most. If you choose Jetstar dollars, you earn them pretty quick with this card. You also get some free insurances for travel and shopping.

Digging Deeper

With the basics covered, it’s time to dig a little deeper into what’s on offer with the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard, so you can decide whether this card is right for you.

This Card: As a Rewards Card

One of the most enticing things about the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard is the fact that it provides cardholders the option of choosing to earn either Qantas Points or Jetstar Dollars. As a cardholder, you can opt in to either program, with a maximum of one switch between programs within each 12 month period. It’s worth noting that a fee of $15 applies for each rewards program switch request.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

If you opt in to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, you can earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent on eligible purchases.

However, now it looks like Jetstar have streamlined their earning structure, with 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 across the board, up to a maximum of 100,000 points per year. Qantas Points are not earned on cash advances, balance transfers and other restricted transactions (as detailed in the Jetstar Mastercard Rewards Program Terms and Conditions).

To earn Qantas Points, you must be a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program. Qantas Points can be redeemed for any number of rewards, including flights, hotels and more than 3,000 products in the Qantas Store. Cardholders may choose to redeem their Qantas Points for Classic Flight Rewards on Qantas, Jetstar and partner airlines, or alternatively, use their points on Qantas insurance, hotels, entertainment, car hire, Qantas epiQure or Qantas Club membership.

Jetstar Dollars

As an alternative to earning points on the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, cardholders can opt in to the Jetstar Dollars program. On this program, cardholders can earn 1 Jetstar Dollar per $50 spent on eligible purchases for the first $2,500 spent per statement period, then 1 Jetstar Dollar per $100 thereafter.

Jetstar Dollars can be accrued up to a maximum of 2,000 Jetstar Dollars per year and cannot be accrued on cash advances, balance transfers or other restricted transactions. As a cardholder, you will be emailed your Jetstar Travel Voucher automatically once you’ve qualified for a $200 voucher (200 Jetstar Dollars = $200 Jetstar Travel Voucher), which can then be used to book Jetstar flights and holiday products.

These products include Jetstar packages, accommodation, activities, transfers, parking, insurance, taxes, fees and more. However, it’s worth pointing out that Jetstar Travel Vouchers can only be used on holiday products if booked together with a Jetstar flight. Also, bookings must be made within six months of the voucher being issued.

This Card: As a Travel Rewards Card

When it comes down to it, the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard isn’t exactly jam-packed with extravagant travel extras. Unlike some platinum cards that offer enticing features such as airport transfers, airport lounge access and free flights each year, the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard keeps it more low key. So, what does it have to offer?

Fly Interest Free

Allowing cardholders to save on interest when booking Jetstar flights or accommodation, this feature is perfect for anyone who likes a little breathing space when paying for a holiday. How does it work? When you use your card to spend $300 or more on any flight or hotel booking at jetstar.com or via the Jetstar call centre, you will automatically get 0% p.a. interest for six months on that booking.

10% Food and Beverages Discount On-board

Helping cardholders to save money as they fly, this feature provides a 10% discount when using the card to pay for food and drinks on Jetstar flights. As anyone who has bought food or drink on-board a plane knows, getting any kind of discount is always a good thing.

No Payment Fee

Another money-saving feature, this allows cardholders to save on fees when booking flights. When using your Jetstar Platinum Mastercard to pay for flights on jetstar.com, the Booking and Service Fee will be waived, helping to make your trip that little bit more affordable.

When comparing the features offered on the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard with those provided on certain other platinum travel rewards cards, Jetstar’s offering does seem a bit light. Especially when you take into account the fact that the basic Jetstar Mastercard offers all the above travel features for a much lower annual fee.

Nevertheless, it is worth bearing in mind that the Jetstar Mastercard has a lower earn rate, no insurance and no personal concierge. To work out which option is best for you – whether it’s one of the Jetstar credit cards or another card entirely – think about the features you actually need, how much the card costs in annual fees, and whether the features on offer are worth the cost.

This Card: Extras on Offer

Another important aspect to consider are the extras on offer. These extras are what gives a credit card value. We can set these extras out so they’re easy to understand, but it’s up to you to decide whether the extras the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard provides offer value to you.

Balance Transfer Offer

If you have credit card debt on other cards that you would like to pay off, this introductory offer could be perfect for you. Allowing you to transfer existing credit card debt onto the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard, this offer lets you save big on interest, with 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 14 months.

That means if you transfer a balance from another credit card, you will pay no interest on that balance for 14 months from card approval. Potentially saving you heaps in interest, this offer can allow you to pay down your balance as you pay less in interest. Take note, at the end of the introductory period, any transferred balance left unpaid will revert to the card’s purchase rate.

Up to 55 Days Interest Free on Purchases

A great option for day-to-day spending, this feature gives you up to 55 days interest free on purchases, as long as you clear your balance by the due date each month. If you want to take advantage of this feature, be aware that not all purchases have the full 55 days interest free. Confused?

The number of interest free days depend on the date of the purchase and how far through the statement cycle it is made. So, if a purchase is made on the first day of the statement cycle, it has 30 days of that statement cycle plus 25 days before interest starts to accrue. If the purchase is made on Day 15 of the statement cycle, it will only have 15 days plus 25 days interest free.

Bear in mind as well that this interest free feature is not available if you have unpaid balance transfers on your account.

Complimentary Insurance Cover

Like many platinum credit cards on the market, the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard offers a range of complimentary insurance covers to cover travel and retail spending.

Currently on offer on the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard is complimentary overseas travel insurance, offering up to 30 days of cover when you use your card to purchase your overseas travel tickets. Also included in this is travel cancellation cover and transport accident cover.

In terms of cover for retail spending, you can benefit from automatic extended warranty insurance for up to $10,000 for most purchases made on the card, and 90 day purchase security insurance for eligible purchases. As with any credit card insurance, always read the PDS in full to find out exactly what is covered, and what exclusions may apply.

Personal Concierge

Another common feature on platinum cards these days in the platinum concierge. Offering a similar service to that of a personal assistant, the platinum concierge service available on the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard is available 24/7, providing assistance with any number of tasks, from travel bookings and restaurant reservations, to gift ideas and theatre recommendations.

Mastercard Extras

As it has the Mastercard logo on the front, this Jetstar offering provides some excellent Mastercard extras. With Mastercard Privileges and Priceless Cities, cardholders have access to an exceptional array of dining, retail, travel and entertainment experiences both at home and overseas.

This Card: The Essentials

Having covered all the fun stuff offered on the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard, it’s now time to look at some more of the need-to-know info. In terms of interest, both the purchase rate and cash advance rate on this card are pretty high. So, to make the most of everything this card has to offer, be sure to clear the balance before interest starts accruing.

As for the annual fee, it is $169 per year for the primary cardholder, and $39 for each additional cardholder. While this is about average for a platinum credit card – although there are platinum offerings that are much cheaper and much more expensive – it’s simply a matter of looking at what the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard provides, and whether that is of value to you.

Decision Time

Providing a nice range of features and a decent earn rate, this card allows cardholders to earn points on their everyday spending, redeeming points through either the Qantas Frequent Flyer program or the Jetstar Dollars program. With so many Jetstar-related extras on offer though, the Jetstar Platinum Mastercard really is best for frequent Jetstar travellers.

Hi Lara, as far as I know the minimum credit limit for this card is $6,000. Therefore you should not be able to get a limit below this. If you are looking for a lower credit limit. Many cards have limits from $500. The standard Jetstar Mastercard has a $2,000 minimum credit limit.

Hi Kim, cash advances and balance transfers won't earn any frequent flyer points with this card. Bookings made over the phone or online won't incur a fee.

Jetstar are refusing to reduce my credit card limit below 5000. Are they allowed to do this?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    21 January 2019
Hi Lara, as far as I know the minimum credit limit for this card is $6,000. Therefore you should not be able to get a limit below this. If you are looking for a lower credit limit. Many cards have limits from $500. The standard Jetstar Mastercard has a $2,000 minimum credit limit.

Hi Kim, cash advances and balance transfers won't earn any frequent flyer points with this card. Bookings made over the phone or online won't incur a fee. Please see this sentence from the terms and conditions, which explains booking fees: (4) Flight bookings made through Jetstar.com, Telephone reservation or Holiday packages will not incur a booking and service fee. Hi Sarah, any ATM should be sufficient to withdraw money. Remember you will get charged interest immediately on the withdrawal - there are no interest free days on cash advances on most credit cards.
