Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer – 0% Balance Transfer

Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Credit Card

Don’t you just love a great offer? Whether it’s the perfect pair of shoes that just happen to be on sale, or a buy-one-get-one-free offer on, well pretty much anything. When it comes to credit cards, you can find special offers all over the place. But while some of them certainly are great, some of them are not so special.

Luckily for us, the current offer on the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Credit Card fits firmly in the former category. Not only can you benefit from 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 28 months, you pay half the annual fee first year and you can earn an exclusive $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher, each year.

Phew. I think we might need to sit down.

Want to find out what else the card has to offer? Let’s take a look.

What we love...

First up, let’s look more closely at the card’s awesome introductory offers. This is a super long balance transfer offer, giving you a massive 28 months to pay down your transferred balance. If you are not moving over a balance and are looking to spend on the card there is another intro offer available on purchases for this same card - click here.

When we’re talking frequent flyer cards, we usually expect to pay a substantial annual fee. Comparable frequent flyer cards include the Qantas Premier Everyday Credit Card and the ANZ Frequent Flyer Card- both earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points at a lower annual fee of $49 and $99, respectively. Yes, we know that these cards have a lower standard annual fee, but the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Credit Card has a trick up its sleeve.

As a cardholder, you can receive a $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher, each year. All you need to do to unlock this offer is make a retail purchase on your card within two months prior to requesting your voucher. You can then use the voucher when booking Virgin Australia flights (including sale fares) or selected Virgin Australia Holidays packages, any time within six months of the voucher issue date.

Want more? You got it. Let’s talk earn rates. You’ll earn 0.66 Velocity Points per $1 spent up to $1500 per month, then 0.5 Velocity Points thereafter.

What’s not so great...

As with any balance transfer offer, it’s best to pay off the transferred balance before the intro period ends. This is most definitely the case with the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Credit Card, as the balance transfer rate reverts to the cash rate of 20.99% p.a. at the end of the intro period.

It’s also worth noting that it features a purchase rate of 20.74% p.a., which could get pretty darn expensive if you carry a balance on this card.

Why should you choose this card?

This card would be a fantastic option if you want to pay off a substantial balance on an existing card. We think 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 28 months is a pretty good deal indeed. But, with its high purchase rate, be sure to pay off that transferred balance and any purchases before they start attracting interest.

If you’re looking for an affordable card that offers decent Points-earning potential – and you happen to like flying Virgin – then this could be the ideal choice. You can earn Points for everyday spending on the card, and higher Points when spending with Virgin Australia.

Any other nifty features? You can enjoy complimentary transit accident insurance and pricing Guarantee on purchases.

Overall Rating

Awesome intro offer on an affordable Velocity frequent flyer card. Gift voucher offer, long balance transfer plus other extras such as decent Points-earning potential for everyday spending.

If you want to get virgin points then this is a good choice. I fly mostly virgin and this gets me 1 point for every dollar. It does have the restriction that stops you earning as many points after you spend $1500 in a month but you still earn points after that.

I currently have a Virgin card that I was using to pay off a balance transfer - with 0% rate. It has now expired and I an wondering if I can continue with another 26 months as per offer there is now.

Hi Rita, unfortunately no - you cannot balance transfer from the same card or same institution. There are a few good offers on the market right now including from HSBC and ANZ, both of which you could transfer Virgin Money debt to. I hope that helps.

what score a good credit score?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    22 March 2021
Hi Gavin, it depends on the bureau from which your score is pulled - but they're pretty close. For Experian, a good score is 625+, for Equifax, a good score is 666+ and for Illion it is 500+. Many things affect your score, but a good score typically means you don't have a history of default or bankruptcy, a good record of repayments and not too many enquiries.

Does virgin card allow balance transfers throughout the 26 month interest free period, or only at the time of application? I want to transfer a balance from a CBA card now, then transfer another balance from the same card in 6 months time.
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    4 January 2021
Hi Ralph, the balance transfer option is only available at the time of application. This is typical across the board with credit cards. In 6 months time, you would need to look for another balance transfer deal to transfer your other credit card.

Hi Ainsley, I assume that during the Christmas holiday weekend. Virgin will not be processing approvals. I would wait until mid next week. Then if you have not heard from them, give Virgin credit card customer service a call. Hope you are having a nice holiday weekend.

    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

Hi Tracey, this is due to Virgin and Suncorp being issued both through Citi.

Hi why can't you transfer limits from Suncorp credit cards?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    21 December 2020
Hi Tracey, Citi issue both Virgin and Suncorp credit cards. A balance transfer must be between different banks. Strangely though Citi will accept transfers from Suncorp and Virgin. Therefore check out the Citi Rewards Platinum. The St George Vertigo may also be of interest.

Hi Rita, yes, you can transfer non-Citi credit card debt to this Virgin offer. You would need to be approved for at least a $6,400 limit to transfer the full $5,000.

Hi Cathy, that amount is above the credit limit this card offers. Have a look at the Citi Rewards Platinum. Again you can transfer non-Citi loans and has possibilities of a higher credit limit.

    17 September 2020
Hi Vishal, Virgin are not a provider that accept temporary residents. Have a look at ANZ, St George, Westpac as banks that will accept an application from you. Approval for depend on a range of factors but around affordability it key.
