The Citi Rewards Card Review

Taking advantage of this exclusive offer, you can pick up 100,000 bonus Citi reward Points when you apply and are approved for the Citi Rewards Card before 30 April 2021. To get your hands on all those lovely points, all you need to do is spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first 90 days. On top of that, you benefit from a reduced annual fee of $49 in the first year.

What we love...

Let’s get stuck into that bonus points offer first. Citi is currently offering up 100,000 bonus Citi reward Points to new eligible cardholders after meeting a $3,000 minimum spend in the first 90 days from card approval.

What is an eligible purchase exactly? Citi classifies an eligible purchase as any transaction made using the card that doesn’t fall into the following categories: cash advances, balance transfers, special promotions, interest, fees, refunds, chargebacks and spending on the account’s Linked Diners Club Card.

Once you meet the minimum spend, the bonus Citi reward Points will be credited to your Rewards Balance within 6 to 8 weeks. This offer is valid until 30 April 2021.

So, what does that bonus of 100,000 Citi reward Points equate to? While we’ll get into the various ways you can redeem points within the Citi Rewards program later, if you were to choose to redeem your bonus points using the Pay with Points feature, you would enjoy $400 in value (where 2,500 points equals $10).

With that in mind then, the card’s adjacent intro offer may seem even more appealing. When you sign up for the Citi Rewards Card, you will pay a reduced annual fee of $49 in the first year, offering you a saving of $100. Not bad indeed.

What’s not so great...

As with most rewards cards, the Citi Rewards Card has a high purchase rate and cash advance rate. However, this shouldn’t affect you if you’re using your card correctly. As long as you pay your closing balance in full each month and avoid cash advances (as you should do with any rewards card if you want true value from it), you can avoid these high interest rates.

Aside from that, it’s worth pointing out the card’s additional cardholder fee. The reduced annual fee offer only applies to the primary cardholder, so if you want to add additional cardholders to the account, that will come at a cost of $90 per year, per cardholder. As with any annual fee, make sure your additional cardholder sees value from the card greater than that additional outgoing cost.

Why should you choose this card?

First up, eligibility. You can apply for the Citi Rewards Card if you are aged 18 or over, you are an Australian resident, and you earn more than $35,000 a year.

Now to suitability. Earning points on the Citi Rewards program, the Citi Rewards Card earns 1 Citi reward Point per $1 on eligible domestic spending up to $10,000 per statement period, and 1 Point per $1 on eligible international spending, uncapped. With the linked Diners Card, you can earn 2 points per $1.

In terms of what you can use those points for, the program offers a few different redemption options. With Pay with Points, you can reduce your card balance by redeeming your points for statement credits on eligible purchases. With this card, this offers a redemption value of 2,500 points per $10. Alternatively, you can pay with points at kogan.com, or transfer to airline miles with a participating airline.

And features? This card has heaps.

  • Pay down debt with 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 15 months (reverts to cash advance rate).
  • Enjoy a free bottle of wine every time you dine at one of the Citibank Dining Program’s many partner restaurants and pay with your Citi Rewards Card.
  • Benefit from a personal assistant available 24/7, thanks to Citi’s personal concierge service.
  • Take advantage of special offers around the world with Citi World Privileges, offering up everything from upgraded hotel rooms and car rentals to online shopping discounts and money off your restaurant bill.
  • Use Citi Instalment Plans to break big expenses into smaller, fixed monthly repayments.
  • Turn your smartphone into a mobile wallet thanks to Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
  • Benefit from round-the-clock customer service and global fraud protection, with ongoing monitoring and Citi Alerts.

  • Save with up to 55 days interest free on purchases (no interest free days apply if you have a balance transfer).

Overall Rating

If you want to boost your points balance while saving on annual fees, the Citi Rewards Card could be well worth looking into. Not only will you save $100 in the first year on annual fees, you can also take home 100,000 bonus Citi reward Points when you meet the minimum spend. As an everyday rewards card, it provides plenty of opportunity to earn, while enjoying lots of perks on the side.
