This Card: The Lowdown

Designed for frequent travellers who want exceptional extras, the American Express Platinum Card is a rewards card with a high earn rate and an almost dizzying selection of features. If you’re searching for a card that gives you more bang for your buck – and you don’t mind paying out a buck or two for the outstanding rewards it offers – this could be the perfect card for you.

Expect high-end features, such as membership to exclusive hotel loyalty programs, Travel Credit, Global Dining Credit and premium digital access to The Australian, while enjoying a high earn rate on everyday spending. And if that wasn’t enough, as long as you meet the minimum spend and requirements, you can take home 200,000 Bonus Membership Rewards® Points.

As of 15 February 2024, American Express launched its Amex Experiences App that gives you even more travel offers, events, and member benefits, including exclusives like Amex pre-sales and special event tickets. You'll be able to access information on booked hotels, book restaurants where your Dining Credit is available and find recommended businesses around the globe. Its an easy way to maximise your Amex Membership benefits in one place.

Just note that the new app doesn't replace the Amex App that you use to manage your banking. To download the new app, search for 'Amex Experiences' (available on Google Play and via the App Store).

If you like travelling and eating out fancy on a semi-regular basis then this card pays for itself just on the benefits. The earn rate on this card is fantastic, allowing me to transfer my points to Qantas so I'm earning 1.13 points per dollar, all while it being in the Amex points so I can just build up points and use them for anything from flights, to hotels, to car rentals from pretty much anywhere in the country. As well as this, being a charge card, it keeps you smart, not overspending because you know you have to pay it back soon.

Great looking card, benefits are good if you can manage to enrol in them. It has taken me in excess of two months to attempt to enrol in the programs offered however glitches in their system don't allow you too. Fees are rather high but can be offset if you are a frequent traveller. Phone customer service is below average, you'd expect much better service when you pay those kind of fees for a platinum card

being that this is a charge card and not a credit card can i use it to deduct my mortgage payment from it and still receive rewards points ?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    10 October 2025
Hi Peter, that’s a really interesting question. Generally, charge cards like the American Express Platinum can’t be used for mortgage repayments, as most lenders don’t accept credit or charge cards for that type of payment. Even if it were possible through a third party, Amex may classify it as a “cash advance” or “excluded transaction,” which typically doesn’t earn points. It’s best to confirm the specifics directly with Amex on 1300 557 743. You can also check Amex’s Membership Rewards Terms for details on what transactions earn points.

Good afternoon I amlooking to sign up to the Amex platinum card. I am currently a secondary card holder with an Amex business platinum card. My question is am I still eligible for the sign on bonus reward points?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    11 July 2025
Hi Andrea, Credit card approval usually depends on the issuer and is based on several factors, including your income versus expenses, assets versus liabilities, and your credit history. You may also be eligible for the sign-up bonus as long as you’re approved before 9 September 2025 and spend $5,000 on eligible purchases. Make sure to check the T&Cs and the TMD before applying to make sure you meet the criteria. All the best Andrea!!

regarding the american express platinum card, 225,000 bonus points are with any airline such as Qantas or Singapore air? $450 travel credit can they be used on any international airline? Access to 1,400 lounges includes Qantas, Singapore, Thai, Emrates or Qatar?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    3 April 2025
Hi Alex, they're some great questions. The great thing about Amex Membership Rewards points are that they can be converted to a plethora of airlines. You can convert them to (but not limited to) Air New Zealand, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Singapore Airlines and Velocity. They are also transferable to Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. To utilise the $450 travel credit you'll need to book using the American Express Travel Service. In terms of airport lounges, this card gives you access to Centurion® Lounges, Centurion® Studio Partners, Delta Sky Club, Plaza Premium Lounges, Virgin Australia lounges, Lufthansa lounges, Priority Pass lounges and other lounges as part of the Amex Global Lounge Collection. Hope this has helped you out Alex!

    17 July 2023
Hi Blaize, I looked into this for you and there’s no mention of getting extra points for shopping at major supermarkets. But, you will earn 2.25 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent on purchases except on government bodies in Australia where you earn 1 point for that.

hi pauline, Am looking into getting a credit card so I can use the rewards. I am very good financially so am just looking into which one would be best for me in terms of rewards. Only looking for one that has a max spend of around 5 thousand. If you have any suggestions that would be great! Kindest of Regards, Tom
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    22 May 2023
Hi Tom, thanks for the information! The “best” card actually depends on various factors that matter only to you. You can compare a range of rewards credit cards options, read our reviews, read other customer reviews and start a short list by hitting the “heart” icon on the card review. Then you can compare each of your preferences side by side until you find the one that you’re ready to apply for. Not exactly the answer you were looking for but I hope this has helped!

Will my credit score from another country (ie. Malaysia) be taken into account when applying for this card?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    20 April 2023
Hi Bryan, interesting question! Usually, when applying for a credit card in Australia, your credit score from another country will not be taken into account as this is country-specific and unique to each country’s financial system. However, American Express (or any other credit card issuers in the country) may still consider other factors such as your income, employment status, and overall financial history and creditworthiness when assessing credit card applications.

Hi can I apply for a credit card and have it as a joint credit card so it can cover my partner and I when we travel?? Thanks
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    22 February 2023
Hi Sereena. It can be quite tricky obtaining a joint credit card because only a small number of credit card companies permit applications from multiple individuals. In Australia, the list of banks that currently accept joint credit card applications is limited to Bendigo Bank, Heritage Bank, Bank Australia, and Hume Bank. To get more information and help, you can either go to their websites or get in touch with them directly.

Question Re AMERICAN EXPRESS PLATINUM CHARGE CARD . For the bonus points , once you meet the criteria spend $5,000 within first 3 months , how long till the points are added and redeemable ? Apart from the annual fee of $1.4k are there any fees if you pay the charges off within the month ? Is the annual fee required to be paid upfront ?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    17 February 2023
Hi Alana, the bonus points will be credited to your account within 8-10 weeks after the spend criteria has been met, and they don’t expire so you can redeem them anytime. Other conditions, exclusions and limits apply so please check the Membership Rewards Terms and Condition. Generally, you won’t be charged any interest as long as you pay your closing balance in full by the due date each month. On top of the annual fee, there are other charges like the cash advance fee, currency conversion fee, paper statement fee, etc. The card annual fee is billed as a one-time charge on your statement in the month when you first activate your card, and in the same month of your card anniversary each year after that. You can have a read through the PDS as well, which has information about all their charges and fees..

I have an AMEX platinum charge card. My wife is linked to the card using a supplementary card. Does she get the same benefits when not traveling with me (eg ACCOR Plus, ALL ACCOR Live, access to airport lounges, premium hotel benefits, etc,)?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    19 April 2022
Hi Christopher, good question! I checked this for you and it states in American Express Insurance terms that as long as you meet the eligibility requirement (e.g either the card member or the additional card member, an AU resident, have used the card to pay in full for the round trip ticket, car rental, etc.), your wife may be covered. For your more detailed question, I suggest reaching out to American Express directly for your wife’s requirements. Safe travels!

Hi, if you are an existing AMEX cardholder what do you need to do to upgrade to the AMEX metal card? Are all additional card holders eligable to travel insureance and airport lounges. Is an additional card holder allowed to bring a guest into the lounge. Kind regards

    24 February 2020
Hi Ann-Marie, its usually when your card is due for renewal that you would receive the new style of card. You can call AMEX credit card customer service and check if you can speed this process up. Only the primary cardholder is eligible for the travel insurance and airport lounges. If other family members are traveling with you. Then they can be eligible as well. Though they are not eligible if you are not are not traveling with them.

Hi Kylie, some retailers will charge a surcharge with AMEX and many dont. It just depends where you shop. I use my AMEX quite regularly but also have a Visa backup. This is when the business may not take AMEX or might want to hit me with another 2-3% to do it. Supermarkets accept and don't surcharge.
