Credit Union SA is a customer-owned credit union

Formed in 2009, when South Australian credit unions, Satisfac and Powerstate, merged. These former credit unions had origins in the education and industrial sectors, and held strong ties within the South Australian community.

Who is Credit Union SA?

Unfamiliar with Credit Union SA? For those of you who live outside of South Australia, here’s a little background info.

As it is customer-owned, Credit Union SA can direct its focus towards its customers. While big banks are more likely to be driven by the need to return dividends to external shareholders, Credit Union SA can channel its profits back into its membership and the broader community.

Taking pride in its ability to help customers achieve their goals, Credit Union SA states, “We’re here to help.” How exactly does it achieve this? Credit Union SA helps its customers by offering innovative products and services, low fees, great interest rates and only the best in customer service.

And of course, there’s the credit union’s community involvement to think of too – providing the South Australian community with development initiatives and project funding.

What can Credit Union SA offer you?

If you want to look beyond the big banks, a customer-owned institution such as Credit Union SA could offer the perfect alternative. Providing a wide range of financial products and services, Credit Union SA has everything from bank accounts and insurance, to loans and credit cards.

Helping you to keep costs down, these products focus on providing you with the features you need, at a low cost you can afford. So, if you want to save money on interest or fees, Credit Union SA may just have the money-saver you’ve been searching for.

Plus, it’s good to know that, just like the big banks, Credit Union SA can provide you peace of mind knowing that your deposited funds are guaranteed by the Financial Claims Scheme.

What kinds of credit cards are on offer?

It’s safe to say that Credit Union SA keeps things simple with its credit cards. This is not the place to find fancy, feature-packed credit cards, so if you want a credit card overflowing with bells and whistles, perhaps it’s best to look elsewhere.

However, if you want a basic credit card that helps you save money, Credit Union SA may have the perfect card for you. With no complicated rewards programs or complex features to worry about, these cards are ideal for cardholders who like to know exactly where they stand.

Why should you choose a Credit Union SA credit card?

So, what exactly is on offer with a Credit Union SA credit card? Here are some of the features to look out for on the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card, and why they might work well for you.

Introductory Offers

Designed to tantalise and tempt, credit card introductory offers entice new applicants to sign up, offering anything from reduced rates on purchases and balance transfers, to lowered annual fees and bonus rewards points.

But, unless you plan on keeping the card for the introductory period only, it’s a good idea to look beyond the introductory offer to what the card provides day-to-day. It’s worthwhile considering how much the card will cost in the long term, especially when it comes to introductory offers on interest rates and annual fees.

While introductory offers on credit cards are always changing, you may just find a great intro offer on the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card. Introductory offers to keep an eye out for include:

  • Balance Transfer Offers: If you have existing credit card debt, a balance transfer offer could help you pay it off faster, while paying less in interest.
  • Purchase Rate Offers: If you have a big purchase to make, a purchase rate offer could help you cover the cost, to then help you save on interest while you pay it all off.
  • Annual Fee Offers: If you want to save money on annual fees, an annual fee offer could help you do this, either for an introductory period or for the life of the card.

Low Ongoing Interest Rate

One of the best things about a low cost card like the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card is that even after its introductory offer ends, you will still have a credit card that is affordable and good value. With other credit cards, that’s not always the case.

For example, if you choose a card for its balance transfer offer, but don’t pay off the transferred balance before the introductory period ends, that balance will revert to the card’s purchase rate or cash advance rate.

If that card also has a number of features and rewards, you may find it has higher rates of interest, which would make that unpaid balance pretty expensive indeed.

On the other hand, the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card has one of the lowest ongoing interest rates in Australia, offering cardholders a super low purchase rate and cash advance rate.

So, whether you choose this card for its introductory offer or its low ongoing rate of interest, you know you have a money-saver in your wallet either way. And with up to 55 days interest free on purchases when you clear your balance each month, you could save even more when using the card.

Low Ongoing Annual Fee

When comparing credit cards, you need to look at all the ways in which each card could cost you money. If you carry a balance, you have to look at the card’s purchase rate, but even if you avoid paying interest by paying off your balance in full, you’ll still need to consider the card’s annual fee.

As a low cost card, the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card has a low annual fee. This can help you keep costs down, but it is worth noting that for that low annual fee, there are not many features on offer.

You will generally find that credit cards with higher annual fees provide more in the way of extras, such as features or rewards. So, if you want lots of extras, just know that you will generally pay for them.

But, if you want a card that keeps it simple, or if you simply do not need all those extras, then it’s good idea to find a low-feature card that only offers what you need. This is one of the most attractive features of the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card – it keeps it simple, so cardholders can save money.

Bear in mind that if you happen to have a Home Loan Package with Credit Union SA, you could save even more money on your credit card, as you will have no annual fee on the card to worry about.

Save on Fees

Working out how much a credit card will cost also means looking at how much you are likely to pay in fees aside from the standard annual fee. Luckily, the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card can help you save money on day-to-day fees, with no ATM withdrawal fees.

Whether you are at home in Australia or overseas, Credit Union SA will not charge you a fee for withdrawing money at an ATM, as long as you are using an ATM that is part of the rediATM network. Take note that the ATM provider itself may still choose to charge a fee.

If you use your card at an overseas merchant – whether online or in person – you will pay a 3% currency conversion fee on the transaction amount. This is made up of a 2% fee charged by third parties, and a 1% fee charged by Credit Union SA.

If you choose to take advantage of the card’s balance transfer offer when it’s available, you will usually find there is no balance transfer fee charged. Check the small print on the offer for confirmation of this.

Security Features

Everyone wants to know their money is safe and their identity is secure. Like most Visa cards available today, the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card offers a range of security features as standard.

These include microchip technology, 24/7 fraud monitoring and Visa’s Zero Liability policy. As a cardholder, you can also register for Verified by Visa, which requires a password to be entered when making a purchase at participating retailers, helping to prevent unauthorised use of the card.

Access

If you have a credit card, you want to be able to use it everywhere and anywhere. Again, as this is a Visa, the Credit Union SA Visa Credit Card provides cardholders with worldwide useability, allowing it to be used everywhere Visa is accepted.

Visa payWave also comes standard on this card, helping to save cardholders time and hassle at the checkout. As a contactless payment system, Visa payWave lets cardholders tap their card when making a payment under $100, without having to worry about entering their PIN.
