The Bendigo Bank Low Rate Platinum Credit Card

When comparing credit cards, it’s a good idea to think about what you actually want in a card – and what you are willing to pay for it. While for some people saving money is the most important factor, for others, features and extras are where it’s at.

For the most part, you will find cards either offer you the ability to keep costs low, or they offer you extras such as features and rewards. Now and then, however, you may just find a card that offers you the best of both worlds.

Offering a low rate and a nice selection of features, the Bendigo Bank Low Rate Platinum Credit Card is one such card. So, if you want to save on interest while enjoying some very handy extras, this card could indeed be the credit card for you.

What we love...

Having reviewed one or two platinum credit cards in our time, at creditcard.com.au, we know platinum perks can be wide-ranging. Some platinum cards are simply stuffed with perks, while others offer just one or two select extras.

As this is a low rate card – with a relatively low annual fee – you know that the Bendigo Bank Low Rate Platinum Credit Card keeps things simple. So, what do you get in the way of platinum perks on this card?

One of the big ticket features on this card is its mobile phone and tablet insurance, allowing you to make a claim if you lose your device or break its screen. Bear in mind that to be eligible for this protection, you need to either use your card to buy the device outright, or pay with installments on your card.

Other useful extras on the Bendigo Bank Low Rate Platinum Credit Card include extended warranty on purchases, best price guarantee, and 90 day purchase protection, helping to give you some extra peace of mind when using your card.

Of course, what makes these extras special is the fact that you’re not paying through the nose to enjoy them. Unlike certain other platinum cards, the Bendigo Bank Low Rate Platinum Credit Card has a super low rate of interest on purchases, and it has an affordable annual fee.

Currently, it offers 0% p.a. for 6 months on balance transfers. At the end of 6 months from account opening, the rate reverts to the standard retail purchase interest rate of 11.99% which pretty much still sticks to being a money saving card.

What’s not so great...

Any time a credit card offers you extra protection in the form of insurance, it’s a good idea to check the small print before you rely on its cover.

For example, the mobile phone and tablet insurance on this card has a limit of $200 on screen breakage, and there is an excess of $50 on all claims made. Similarly, if you want to take advantage of the card’s extended warranty or purchase protection, you will have to pay an excess of $250 for each claim.

Why should you choose this card?

Needless to say, the Bendigo Bank Low Rate Platinum Credit Card has plenty to offer. As a cardholder, you can benefit from an affordable annual fee and a low rate purchase rate, with up to 55 days interest free on purchases. Plus, take advantage of the balance transfer offer.

You can also take advantage of 24/7 fraud monitoring and no liability for unauthorised transactions, no fees for additional cardholders and a low platinum card minimum credit limit of $3,000. And of course, your card has in-built contactless payment technology, and is accepted at more than 43 million locations worldwide.

Overall Rating

An affordable platinum option with a low purchase rate and relatively low annual fee, offering a decent array of platinum perks, including mobile and tablet insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty.

You pay a low annual fee plus you get rewards – great combination IMO. Easy to earn points, and a great choice of rewards. Only downside is high interest. Make sure you don’t leave the balance unpaid from month to month and you’ll be fine.

Hi, I have a Bendigo Platinum Master Card with a credit limit to $5000.00. Presently a Zero Balance on this card. I also have a Coles Platinum Mastercard with a Credit limit to $7000.00. My daughter will be having surgery in Feb 2020. Her surgeon and hospital fees come to a total of $5,500.00 which they would like paid either by Mastercard(2% surcharge applies) or via direct deposit. Should I pay for her surgery on the Coles Master card in the first instance and then Bank Transfer from my Bendigo Card? (How much cover does Bendigo Bank offer on balance transfers 80% of monies wanting paid out?). I understand that Bendigo Bank offer a 6 month period of 0% to pay out this balance and then high interest after this period. …. Or should I look at taking out a Personal Loan for the $5,500.00 over a 6month or 12 month period. I have so many questions. Thank you. Ellen

Hi Ellen, I suggest that you cancel whatever card you are not really using - be it the Coles or the Bendigo. Make the purchase on the one that's left. Then look to transfer that amount to a 0% balance transfer. These balance transfers are typically only available at the time of application. Therefore you would not be able to do it with your current Bendigo card. The 80% is just of your approved credit limit. You could still transfer the whole amount. An offer like the HSBC Platinum Qantas could work with 0% for 12 months, no balance transfer fee and no annual fee for the first year. Also its a great card for earning Qantas points for lower spenders.

Hi Gwendolyn, Bendigo bank will accept balance transfers from CBA, subject to credit approval. If you are not happy with Commbank (or any bank). Then its always a good idea to move.

Hi Ravishu, it can be hard on your visa type to get approved for a credit card. I Would look at the big4 banks, CBA, ANZ, NAB or Westpac. I would suggest that you speak to your everyday bank as well where your pay is deposited and see if they can assist you with a card.

Can you use Bpay( future payments etc) on this Visa card? Or is that a basic feature of all Visa cards or just some banks? thanks
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    13 July 2017
Hi Helen, its a basic feature. In the end it will depend on the institution that you are paying with bpay whether they accept or not through credit cards. Some will not accept bpays from credit cards.

    26 February 2016
Hi Julie - here is a link to the rewards program - https://rewards.bendigobank.com.au/ - this gives you full details of what you can redeem points for. As far as I can see there is no way to convert to flyer points. If you want to earn these types of points check out our frequent flyer section as there are some great offers available.

Do I have bad credit with use
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    2 December 2014
HI Nathelia - not completely sure of your question. If you have bad credit, it is very difficult to get a credit card in Australia. If you are asking, will a credit card give me bad credit, then if you use it wisely a credit card can be a great resource. Different types of defaults paid or unpaid will effect your ability to get a credit card differently.
