What we love...

The combination of bonus points offer and a waived annual fee is a rare gem to any cardholders. Imagine enjoying a heaping 100,000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points without being charged of the annual fee in the first year, currently $149.

The card also comes with a low interest rate on purchases at 19.99% p.a. and up to 55 days interest free to help free up cash flow. Currently, it offers to new American Express Card Members an introductory interest rate of 3.99% p.a. on purchases for the first 6 months. Complimentary Travel Insurance offers protection for you, your spouse and your dependent children (25 years of age or younger) as well as all your Employee Business Explorer Credit Card Members when you book and pay for your return trip with your Business Explorer Credit Card.

Another interesting extra for business travellers is the card’s special airport lounge access. Cardholders can live it up with two complimentary entries per year to the American Express Lounge, located at Sydney International Airport or Melbourne International Airport.

What’s not so great...

The card doesn’t come with an introductory balance transfer offer. This is only worth considering if you need to transfer an existing business credit card debt from another bank or issuer.

Why should you choose this card?

As a business credit card, the Business Explorer offers plenty of premium features and fantastic bonus points offer that keep on giving. So much value packed in for the $149 annual fee.

Would paying an ATO tax bill be considered in the "minimum spend" to obtain the bonus points?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    22 June 2022
Hi Dave, as charges on this card earn points at the ATO, this will be included in the minimum spend. The structure is listed out on page 4 of the Amex Business Cards T&Cs.

Hi, I want to apply for this card for business purposes. Just checking that I can do so and wondering what paperwork I will need?

Hi Chandrika, having a separate card for personal and business is a great way to keep track of your spending. For this card Amex states that you must “have a valid ABN and your business must be registered for GST.” You may need to provide BAS activity statements and your accountant's phone number as part of the process. Let us know how you go!

Qantas is not listed in the airline partners, but you say you can turn your membership rewards into Qantas points. I need to be sure of this before I make an application for the card. And if so, is it one reward point for one Qantas point?

    29 July 2021
Hi again Francesca! Thanks for following up. We should have delved deeper into this for you yesterday and detailed that the transfer and the process is a little trickier than that. To transfer membership rewards to Qantas, first you need to transfer your points to the Marriot Bonvoy program. Then from there you can transfer into Qantas. If you’re looking for a direct earn Qantas Business Card, you could consider the American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card or the NAB Qantas Business Signature Credit Card. Let us know how you go with your points hunting!

Hi Francesca, thanks for your question! We dug into this and found that you can turn your Membership Rewards points into Qantas points which you can use towards your next trip.

Does American Express Business Explorer Credit Card have the facility to download automatically to XERO accounting package for our day to day reconciliation

Hi TJ, yes you can link AMEX credit cards to Xero. I do this myself. Though I am not sure if this is done daily. I would reach out to XERO to confirm this.

Do i still get the bonus points if i have previously owned a private amex card, not business, for which i earned bonus points on?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    4 June 2019
Hi Tye, as this is not a personal card, it will be in your businesses name. Therefore I would say you are eligible for the bonus points if your business is a new card holder. If your business has held an AMEX card in the last 18 months then I would say no. The terms itself are not very clear as they seem to just have been ported over from the personal card. Though business and personal cards are totally different. I have copied the terms here. 7D. Offer only available to new American Express Card Members who apply by 3rd July 2019, are approved and spend $3,000 on their new Card in the first 3 months from the Card approval date. Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. Previous and existing bank-issued American Express companion cardholders are eligible for this offer (cards issued by: Australia New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, Westpac Banking Corporation). 100,000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points will be awarded to the eligible Card Member’s Account 8-10 weeks after the spend criteria has been met. This advertised offer is not applicable or valid in conjunction with any other advertised or promotional offer. Subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Membership Rewards program available at www.membershiprewards.com.au/termsandconditions. Introductory Membership Rewards Bonus Points may vary dependent on the time of approval.

Hi. What penalty is there if you default on your monthly payment on the change card? Whats the best way of ensuring I pay my balance each month?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    21 February 2018
Hi Helen, I find paying online through BPAY on my internet banking is the easiest. You can setup a direct debit, whereby any outstanding amount is automatically paid each month for a set bank account. The late payment fee is $30 with AMEX if you dont pay your account on time.

    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

Hi Gerard, you cannot transfer out to Qantas points with this card. There are a stack of different partner airlines. Check out this image which gives you the details of what airlines you can transfer to and what rate.
