The Macquarie Credit Union Visa Credit Card

New cardholders could enjoy some serious savings when they apply for the Macquarie Credit Union Visa Credit Card, with 6.95% p.a. on balance transfers, purchases and cash advances for the first 6 months currently on offer. For a tiny annual fee, the card also provides up to 55 days interest free on purchases, and a low ongoing purchase rate.

What we love...

Designed to help you save money both in the short term and the long term, the Macquarie Credit Union Visa Credit Card has one very tempting introductory offer right now. When you apply for this card, you can benefit from 6.95% p.a. on balance transfers for the first six months. So, why would you need an offer such as this?

This offer could help you save if you have existing credit card debt on other cards. By transferring the balance to your new Macquarie Credit Union Visa Credit Card, you could take advantage of a much lower rate, allowing you to pay down that balance faster, as you pay less in interest. At the end of the intro period, any balance remaining reverts to the card’s low purchase rate.

But, this card is much more than its introductory offer. With a low annual fee and purchase rate, it could work well as a low cost card in the longer term. That annual fee is seriously low, plus you can choose to add up to three additional cardholders at no extra charge. Additional cardholders do not have to be members, but must satisfy the 100 point check identification criteria.

With its low ongoing purchase rate, this card could work well for cardholders who carry a balance. And as a nice touch, Macquarie Credit Union also seems to offer its interest free feature to cardholders regardless of whether they carry a balance month to month. Unlike other cards, which typically require cardholders to pay their balance in full to benefit from interest free days on their purchases, with this card all new purchases receive up to 55 days interest free each month.

What’s not so great...

Like most credit unions, Macquarie Credit Union requires cardholders to become a member before they apply for the Macquarie Credit Union Visa Credit Card. Unfortunately, membership is limited to:

  • Employees (or family members of an employee) of Essential Energy.
  • Employees (or family members of an employee) of any Local Government Council (or Authority), any State Government Department (or Authority, including Health Care, Ambulance and Fire), any Federal Government Department (or Authority), Australia Post or Telstra residing in NSW or ACT.
  • Employees (or family members of an employee) of Auscott Ltd.
  • Employees (or family members of an employee) of Macquarie Credit Union Limited (incorporating Essential Energy Credit Union and PostTel Credit Union).
  • Those who reside in the Local Government Areas of Dubbo, Narromine, Gilgandra, Warren, Cobar, Coonamble and Nyngan.

Why should you choose this card?

With its introductory offer on balance transfers, the Macquarie Credit Union Visa Credit Card could be a real money-saver. It could be a great option for cardholders who tend to carry a balance – both in the long and short term – and for cardholders who want to pay down existing credit card debt.

While it may not be packed with features, it does offer cardholders access to the vast Visa network, allowing them to make purchases from more than 450,000 merchant locations in Australia and over 24 million merchants in 220 countries around the world. As the card is a Visa, it also provides access to handy features such as Verified by Visa and Visa payWave.

Overall Rating

The Macquarie Credit Union Visa Credit Card has an incredibly low annual fee, a low ongoing purchase rate, and an intro offer of 6.95% p.a. on balance transfers, purchases and cash advances for the first 6 months.
