Overall rating

The David Jones American Express Credit Card, issued by Latitude, is designed for those who love shopping at David Jones and want to earn rewards on their everyday spend. Now, for a limited time, new cardholders can enjoy 0% interest on eligible purchases for 6 months when they apply and are approved before 31 January—making it even easier to take advantage of this stylish shopper’s card.

While it might not boast the extensive premium perks of higher-tier cards, its focus on rewarding everyday spend, especially at David Jones and common shopping locations, makes it a solid contender for those looking to get more back from their regular purchases. Just be mindful of the high purchase interest rate if you don't pay off your balance in full.

What I love about the David Jones Premiere Card

This card packs a punch in the points-earning department, especially in categories where many people spend frequently. It's not just limited to David Jones anymore, which is a great plus.

Here are the key benefits:

0% Interest Offer: Enjoy 0% interest on eligible purchases for 6 months when you apply and are approved for a David Jones Credit Card before 31 January—perfect for spreading the cost of larger purchases while earning rewards.

Strong Points Earning Rates: You earn valuable David Jones Points across several tiers of spending. The rate is particularly good where you might shop often:

  • 2 points per $1 spent at David Jones (in-store and online).
  • 3 points per $1 spent at participating supermarkets and petrol stations.
  • 1 point per $1 spent everywhere else Mastercard is accepted.

Getting bonus points at supermarkets and petrol stations significantly boosts your earning potential on everyday essentials.

Flexible Redemption Options: All those hard-earned David Jones Points can be redeemed in several practical ways via the David Jones Points Hub (accessible through the Latitude App). Options typically include:

  • Redeeming points for David Jones Gift Cards (minimum redemption applies, e.g., 3000 points for $20).
  • Converting points to a credit on your card account (minimum redemption applies, e.g., 5000 points for $25).
  • Using points to 'erase' eligible purchases made on the card (minimum purchase and points balance apply, e.g., purchases $25 or more within the last 30 days, minimum 5,000 points).

The ability to get points back as a statement credit offers good flexibility beyond just gift cards.

David Jones Perks: As expected, being a David Jones cardholder comes with exclusive benefits when shopping there. These include complimentary express delivery for online orders and complimentary gift wrapping in-store.

The ongoing annual fee is $99, which remains competitive for a rewards card with this level of flexibility and value.

Other features and benefits

Beyond the points and core DJ benefits, the card includes several useful features:

  • Mastercard Acceptance: Benefit from worldwide acceptance wherever Mastercard is welcomed.
  • Digital Wallets: Easily add your card to Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay for convenient contactless payments.
  • Hotel Discounts: Access a 10% discount at selected hotels via Expedia and Wotif when booking through the Latitude App.
  • Exclusive Access: Receive exclusive invitations to David Jones events and previews, along with special cardholder discounts.
  • Up to 55 Interest-Free Days: Get interest-free days on purchases when you pay your closing balance in full by the due date.

What’s not so great

Every card has its drawbacks, and the Premiere card is no exception:

High Purchase Interest Rate: If you don't pay your balance in full each month, the ongoing purchase interest rate of 23.99% p.a. is quite high. Carrying a balance will quickly outweigh the value of any points or benefits earned. ⚡ The best way to use a rewards card is to pay the full statement balance by the due date to avoid interest charges.

Annual Fee after First Year: While $99 is reasonable for a rewards card, you need to ensure you're earning enough points or using the benefits (like free delivery or discounts) to offset this cost annually.

Limited Insurance Coverage: Unlike some premium cards, the Premiere card does not complimentary travel insurance or other broader insurances like purchase protection. An additional cardholder fee of $24 also applies.

Who suits the David Jones Premiere Card?

The David Jones Premiere Credit Card is a strong fit for individuals who frequently shop at David Jones and regularly spend at supermarkets and petrol stations. If you can consolidate your spending on this card in these key areas and reliably pay off your balance in full each month to avoid interest, the points can add up quickly and provide tangible value through redemptions at David Jones or as statement credit. It's a good entry-point rewards card for loyal David Jones customers who want more than just store discounts.

As always, refer to the card's Key Fact Sheet and Conditions of Use provided by Latitude for the full details on rates, fees, eligibility, and benefits. Terms and conditions apply.

I am retiree who own home outright with a Superannuation balance of $4M. I draw down from our Superannuation around $110k per year. have applied for card with Comm Bank and my husband has applied to AMEX but have been rejected. Do you think it may be a line of credit (unused) of $800k that is the problem? We cannot understand why we struggling to get approval for any card? Any help is greatly appreciated

Hi Leigh, thanks for sharing. That sounds really frustrating. Credit card approvals depend on a range of factors, including income, credit history, and existing credit limits. A high unused line of credit can sometimes affect applications because lenders look at total available credit, not just what’s used. While we can’t access individual applications, you might find our guide on what to do when your credit card application is declined helpful for understanding what could be influencing the decisions. If you’d like to clarify specifics, it’s best to contact the issuers directly: Commonwealth Bank: 13 22 21 American Express: 1300 132 639 I did a deep-dive on some of the bigger providers in Australia and what they need to see when retirees apply for credit cards. Best of luck Leigh!

What criteria to apply for David jones credit card and how many years employment

Hi Chona, great question. The David Jones Credit Card is issued by Latitude Financial Services, and they’ll look at a few key things when you apply. This usually includes your age (you’ll need to be at least 18), Australian residency status, income, credit history, and ability to make repayments. There isn’t a strict requirement for how many years you’ve been employed, but having a steady income and good credit history can help strengthen your application.
