Westpac Flex Card

The Westpac Flex works similarly to Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) products such as Afterpay, where you make fixed repayments to your balance over a set period of time. You can choose whether to make the repayments monthly or fortnightly. If you want to pay more you can do that too.

If you’re approved, you’ll also get an instant card in your digital wallet that you can use with Google Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Garmin Pay and Fitbit.

If you’re a savvy online shopper, you’ll also love no foreign transaction fees, but the low credit limit may not be great for travellers.

Why should you choose this card?

Build your credit

If you’ve been using other BNPL services and want to start building your credit history this card could be for you. Services like Afterpay don’t affect your credit, so keeping up with your payments won’t help your score. But if you miss a payment your score can be negatively affected.

With the Westpac Flex your payment history is recorded, which can be great for your credit score. The Flex Credit Card lets you set up auto-repayments to the minimum monthly repayment too, so you don’t have to worry about remembering to pay your balance.

Rewards

Also, you’ll join the Westpac Extras and Rewards program which gives you access to special offers, discounts or cashback in your account.

Low cost

You will only pay a fee with this card if you have an outstanding balance, which is a $10 monthly fee. You can avoid all fees by repaying your balance in full and making repayments on time. You also won’t be charged for spending in a foreign currency on this card which makes it a great option to shop online.

What’s not so great...

The Flexi Card only comes with a low credit limit of $1,000, but if you’re making small purchases this card could be a viable alternative to the BNPL offers in the market. If your balance is $0 there are no fees, but you will be charged a $10 monthly fee when you have an outstanding balance.

Our verdict

If you are looking for a low cost, no-frills credit card, this is a good option for you. You can also benefit from Westpac Rewards when you spend. However, there is not much to differentiate this card from other no interest credit cards, like the NAB Straight Up and the CommBank Neo. It will come down to your rewards program preference.

Hi Detroit, good question! With the Westpac Flex card, you’ll get no foreign transaction fees on purchases but you're not able to make cash withdrawals/advances or balance transfers. However, there are various other credit cards that provide low cash advance rates (as low as a cash advance can be). You’ll also get charged foreign transaction fees, cash advance fees and the cash advance rate of interest.

Is the $1000 credit limit per month or per day?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    1 August 2023
Hi Zena, good question! The $1000 credit limit is typically the total amount you can spend using your credit card at any given time, not just for one day or one month. It's the maximum balance you can have on your card before you need to pay off some of it to free up more credit. Whether you spend $1000 in one day or over the course of a month, you shouldn't exceed the credit limit. You can read more about credit limits here. Hope this helps!

Hi Dudley, unfortunately, we’re currently not partnered with the Westpac Flex Card. But the good news is you can visit their official website to apply. Additionally, you can also check out some of the other low interest credit cards if you’re looking to not pay interest on your purchases.
