The St.George Vertigo Credit Card Review – Cashback Offer

Want a little something back on your credit card spending? With its cashback offer, the St.George Vertigo Credit Card - Cashback could be just what you’re looking for. As a new cardholder, you can get an easy 10% cashback (up to $400 total cashback) if you pay using your new card at selected supermarkets & petrol outlets within 180 days from card approval. Ongoing, the card offers a low purchase rate, for a reasonable $55 annual fee.

What we love...

As introductory offers go, this cashback card from St.George is pretty easy to get your head around. All you need to do is successfully apply by 31 July 2024 and use your new card to pay at selected supermarkets including Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Harris Farm, and Aldi, and selected petrol outlets within 180 days from card approval. Your cashback will be credited to your account as a statement credit within 30 days.

And the small print? Here are the important bits:

  • The cashback offer is not available to existing St.George, Bank of Melbourne, or BankSA customers who currently hold a Vertigo credit card, or who have held one in the past 12 months.
  • Only one cashback will be paid per customer.
  • Eligible purchases do not include gift card or eGift card purchases at participating supermarkets & petrol outlets, cash, cash-equivalent transactions, third party payments such as AfterPay, BPAY, PayPal or PayPal equivalent.

Aside from its cashback offer, there is plenty to love on the St.George Vertigo Credit Card - Cashback.

First, you can keep the savings coming with its balance transfer deal. If you set up the balance transfer during the application, you'll get a discounted 6.99% p.a. interest rate on the amount transferred for 12 months. After that, you'll pay the standard cash advance rate of 20.99% p.a.. St.George allows you to transfer up to 3 balances from credit, charge or store cards. You can transfer up to 80% of your credit limit, with a minimum of $200.

Now let's look at the purchase rate. Unlike many cards, this card offers an ongoing low purchase rate. This can come in handy on the occasion when you can’t clear your balance at the end of the month. And when you can? You can benefit from up to 55 days interest-free on purchases.

As for its annual fee, this is pretty reasonable $55 p.a. It’s also worth noting that you can add an additional cardholder to the account at no extra cost. So, if you have a partner or trusted family member who needs access to a card, you can add them to the account, making it easy to keep track of family spending. As the primary cardholder, you are responsible for all spending on the account.

Last on the list of features worth mentioning is this card’s compatibility with Apple Pay. If you like to leave your wallet at home – and just so happen to have an Apple device – you can sync your card with Apple Pay, to then pay with a tap of your device at the checkout. Apple Pay can also speed up the online shopping process, auto-filling your details at checkout.

What’s not so great...

While the St.George Vertigo card has some great features including its balance transfer discount, it's not quite as competitive as a balance transfer with 0% interest. But, the annual fee is low and the cashback deal is excellent, which could outweigh the small interest you'll pay on the balance transfer amount.

Why should you choose this card?

The main reason to choose this card right now is to take advantage of its cashback offer. As long as you can afford to spend and pay it all off before it starts accruing interest, this card provides an easy way to get a portion of your spend back as cashback, and use it exactly as you like.

If you occasionally carry a balance, the St.George Vertigo Credit Card - Cashback could also work well for you, with its low ongoing purchase rate. Its low annual fee is also reasonable. And while its range of perks may not be huge, they may suit you if all you’re looking for is a basic card.

Enjoy shopping with the card's Card Block, 24/7 fraud monitoring, Secure Online Shopping Service, and the St.George Fraud Money Back Guarantee. In case of misplacing your card, Card Block will temporarily stop new transactions on your card for 15 days or until reactivated.

Overall Rating

As a low rate card, the St.George Vertigo Credit Card - Cashback keeps its perks simple, in return for a reasonable annual fee. A highlight on this card is its cashback offer, which provides up to $400 total cashback if you successfully apply and simply use your new card to pay for your shopping.

With St.George Vertigo Credit Card – Cashback Offer, can i buy stuff online from woolies and still get cash back? or i need to use it only "instore"?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    15 June 2023
Hi Bri, that’s a great question! You may use your card to make purchases online however, you will only earn cashback on eligible transactions made at participating supermarkets and petrol stations. St.George will determine cashback depending on what the merchant is classified as to St.George. Although most supermarkets and petrol stations (large and small) are involved in this program, there are certain establishments outside the Supermarket, Grocers, and Service Station categories that will not take part. Supermarkets such as Coles Express, Costco, Metropolitan Fresh, and wholesale supermarkets are some of those that are not participating. Hope this helps!

I recently got my vertigo mastercard. i want to know if only the supermarkets you mentioned count as eligible purchases for the cashback or online purchases on Amazon and other retailers as well? I asked their customer service and they said anything except the exclusions metioned (like cash bpay etc) count towards cash back? Also which pertol stations are included?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    22 May 2023
Hi Jawad, thanks for your message! Unfortunately, like many other card issuers, the specific list of eligible transactions is not publicly available. However, as you mentioned certain types of transactions such as fees, cash-equivalent transactions, third party payments like BPAY, gift card or e-gift card purchases are not considered eligible. Additionally, with the St.George Vertigo Cashback card, while most major supermarkets and many petrol stations participate, there are certain establishments that do not fall under the supermarket, grocer, or service station merchant categories and therefore may not participate (e.g., Coles Express, Costco, Metropolitan Fresh, and some wholesaler supermarkets - you should check with the individual retailer before purchasing).Hope this helps!

What is the minimum salary I can apply this credit card?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    6 April 2021
Hi Alice, there is no listed minimum income requirement for this card. Your application is assessed on a number of factors including how your income compares to your expenses. The minimum credit limit of this card is $6,000, so you'll need to be able to service a limit at least this high. For example, other cards with a $6,000 limit have minimum income requirements from $35,000 to $40,000. I hope that helps.
