The St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card Review – Cashback Offer

Want a little something back on your credit card spending? With its new cashback offer, the St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card could be just what you’re looking for. As a new cardholder, you can get an easy $300 cashback when you spend $900 in the first three months. Ongoing, the card offers a low purchase rate, overseas travel insurance, purchase security insurance and extended warranty, all for a reasonable $99 annual fee.

What we love...

As introductory offers go, this new cashback offer from St.George is pretty easy to get your head around. All you need to do is spend at least $900 on your card within 90 days of card approval, and you will receive $300 cashback to spend as you like. After making that spend, your cashback will be credited to your account as a statement credit within 60 days.

And the small print? Here are the important bits:

  • The offer is not available to existing St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA customers who currently hold a Vertigo Platinum credit card, or who have held one in the past 12 months.
  • Only one cashback will be paid per customer.
  • Eligible purchases do not include interest, fees and charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, payments to the ATO, government charges, BPAY or similar transactions, refunds or balance transfers.
  • Offer ends 30 March 2021.

Aside from its cashback offer, there is plenty to love on the St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card. Let’s start with its purchase rate. Unlike many platinum cards, this card offers a low purchase rate ongoing. This can come in handy on the occasion when you can’t clear your balance at the end of the month. And when you can? You can benefit from up to 55 days interest free on purchases.

As for its annual fee, this is pretty reasonable. It’s also worth noting that you can add up to three additional cardholders to the account at no extra cost. So, if you have a partner or trusted family members who need access to a card, you can add them to the account, making it easy to keep track of family spending. As the primary cardholder, you are responsible for all spending on the account.

Like many platinum cards, the St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card offers a range of complimentary insurances to cardholders. These include:

  • Overseas Travel Insurance: This provides cover on trips up to six months, with cover for your spouse and dependent children as well. Cover includes medical expenses, unexpected cancellation and rental vehicle excess.
  • Purchase Security Insurance: This provides up to four months cover against theft, loss or accidental damage on selected personal goods purchased using the card.
  • Extended Warranty: This provides extended warranty insurance on purchases made on the card, offering up to 12 months additional cover on the manufacturer’s expressed Australian warranty.

Terms apply. Read the PDS.

Last on the list of features worth mentioning is this card’s compatibility with Apple Pay. If you like to leave your wallet at home – and just so happen to have an Apple device – you can sync your card with Apple Pay, to then pay with a tap of your device at the checkout. Apple Pay can also speed up the online shopping process, auto-filling your details at checkout.

What’s not so great...

While the St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card does have a balance transfer offer, it’s not the best you’ll find on the market. Transferring an existing balance to this card, you will get a rate of 6.99% p.a. for 12 months. While this is likely lower than the rate you are currently paying, there are better balance transfer offers out there if you are serious about paying down your balance.

Why should you choose this card?

The main reason to choose this card right now is to take advantage of its cashback offer. As long as you can afford to put $900 on the card within the first three months – and pay it all off before it starts accruing interest – this card provides an easy way to get a third of that spend back as cashback, to spend exactly as you like.

If you occasionally carry a balance, the St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card could also work well for you, with its low ongoing purchase rate. Its low annual fee is also reasonable – plus you can take advantage of a handy selection of complimentary insurances. And while its range of perks may not be huge, they may suit you if all you’re looking for is a basic platinum card.

Overall Rating

As a low rate platinum card, the St.George Vertigo Platinum Credit Card keeps its platinum perks simple, in return for a reasonable annual fee. A highlight on this card at the moment is its cashback offer, which provides $300 cashback after a $900 spend in the first 90 days.
