Who suits the Amex Qantas Business Rewards card?

Business Ace: you want a smarter business strategy by earning points and freebies, tracking employee spending and simplifying accounts.

This card has features as big as the breath you need to say its name. Amex has designed its Qantas Business Rewards charge card to be a money management tool with a load of extras and points to reward you generously for your business spending.

As long as its benefits outweigh the annual fee for you, a business card like this can be a great tool for keeping your accounts together, tracking employee expenses and saving on regular costs like travel insurances.

⚠ FYI, the bonus points offer won’t apply if you’ve held an American Express card in the previous 18 months. Also, this card is a charge card, which isn't a line of credit - you won't pay interest but you will need to pay it off in full each month, unless you use a Flexible Payment Option (more on that below).

Editor's Review: What I love about the American Express Qantas Business Rewards card

I’ll start by breaking down some of its big features. There is a lot to this card, so strap in.

Bonus points: You’ll get a huge 175,000 Qantas Points if you spend $3000 on eligible purchases using the card in the first 2 months from the day you’re approved. The points will be added to your account 8 to 10 weeks after you meet the minimum spend.

(And, if you’re wondering what an eligible purchase is, the card’s PDS says it does not include “Card fees and charges, for example annual fees, interest, late payment, cash advances, balance transfers, traveller’s cheques and foreign currency conversion.”)

Earning points: I’ll dive into points in more detail in the Qantas Points section below, but here’s a snapshot: you'll earn Qantas Points on everyday spending plus bonus points on eligible Qantas flight bookings and when shopping with Qantas Business Rewards Partners. You can also transfer unlimited points to other frequent flyer accounts including employees and clients.

Travel insurance: The complimentary travel insurance is a nice deal since it covers you, your spouse and your 99 Employee Card Members for return domestic and international trips (as long as they meet eligibility criteria, such as being under 79 and that at least $500 of the trip costs were paid for on the card). Amex credit card insurance even includes scheduled cruises, which is rare.

Qantas Club lounge: You’ll get two complimentary passes to Qantas Club lounges in Australia once you’ve made an eligible Qantas purchase each year, such as booking a flight with a QF flight number, or a membership fee for Qantas Business Rewards, Qantas Frequent Flyer or Qantas Club.

Extra perks: As a bonus, you’ll get up to $100 back to your account, maximum of two credits at a total of $200 each year, with Dell technologies. Promo ends 31 August 2024.

Other business perks and features

This card doesn't stop giving - here are other extras that help your business run more smoothly and save on dollars:

Consolidate business expenses. Another benefit of a business charge card is keeping your expenses in one place. You can automate your reporting and statements with a direct feed from your card’s account into MYOB, Quicken and Microsoft Excel.

Monitor employee spending. You’ll be able to see what your employees are purchasing and gain better control over your business’s cash flow with up to 99 Employee Cards. These cards earn Qantas Points at the same rate as the primary accountholder.

Don’t pay interest. Plus, you won’t pay interest on the Amex Qantas Business Rewards card, because it’s a charge card and not a line of credit. You’ll have no pre-set spending limit - but that doesn’t mean unlimited spending! Your purchases are approved by Amex and can evolve as your spending changes over time. You’ll need to pay the card off in full each month (missing payments may incur interest) but you do have up to 51 days to pay for purchases.

Flexible repayments. Amex gives you access to the Flexible Payment Option (FPO), where you can choose to pay off a portion of your monthly balance over time if you need a hand with cash flow. When you apply, you'll be given a maximum amount you can use towards a FPO (much like a credit card limit, but for the amount you can allocate to flexible repayments). If you don't pay your statement in time, your interest-free days will be forfeit and an automatic FPO will be set up and charged interest until it's paid off in full. FPO's are charged at either the normal purchase rate or the rate specified on your monthly statement and may include other fees.

How many Qantas Points can you earn?

The Amex Qantas Business Rewards card gives you a ton of ways to earn points, which you can gain pretty quickly with an army of staff out there using their Employee Cards too.

Here are the points you can earn and any exclusions (honestly, this is such a big card that the PDS is your friend - check it for all the details):

  •  2 Qantas Points per dollar spent on Qantas products and services. This includes passenger flights with a QF number, Qantas Holidays and Qantas Club membership and annual fees.
  •  1.25 Qantas Points per dollar on everyday business spend. This excludes annual fees, late payment fees and charges for foreign currencies. After a total of 500,000 Qantas Points is earned in a calendar year, the everyday business earn rate will change from 1.25 to 0.75 Qantas Points per $1 spent.*
  •  0.5 Qantas Points per dollar on utilities, insurances and government bodies. Utilities include gas, water and electricity providers, government includes the ATO, Australian Postal Corporation, federal/state and local government bodies, and insurance excludes insurances by Amex.
  •  The Qantas Points your business earns when flying with Qantas will be tripled. This applies when you make an eligible Qantas flight booking and excludes Jetstar flights. Points earned from flying using this card are capped at 4 million per membership year.
  •  Earn bonus points with 50+ Qantas Business Rewards partners. Partners include BP Plus, Xero, Alinta Energy, Avis, Accor Plus and BizCover.

*Note: if you applied for the card between 1 July 2023 to 9 January 2024, the change in the everyday earning rate will come into effect from 10 July 2024.

💡 You can spend your Qantas Points on flights or dish them out to anyone with a Qantas Frequent Flyer membership.

What's not so great...

There are really only two main downsides to the American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card: the annual fee and the payment terms. You'll need to make sure you're getting the value out of the rewards points and the savings on accounting time to offset the cost of the card - although the annual fee is also generally tax deductible as long as it's used solely for business purposes. In terms of payment, this card is designed to be paid off each month, so you'll also need to assess if you can make the payments in full to avoid fees and interest charges.

One more thing to note is that you'll need to carefully read the terms for the Qantas travel benefits (such as the 10% off with Business Rewards customers) as there are a bunch of terms around the eligible flight types and carriers. I can sum it up by saying it's worth reading the PDS to make sure you're getting all the value out of your card.

Overall Rating

In the business card space, the Amex Qantas Business Rewards card stands up really well. I like that it earns decent rewards points and has so much flexibility in how you use them. The big caveat is that you’ll need to pay off the card in full each month, which isn’t the worst deal since you’ll avoid paying interest that way.

Of course, one could argue that the annual fee on this card is high, but honestly, I’d say that argument applies more to a personal card. $450 for a business to manage expenses and cash flow, earn Qantas Points every day and get free company travel insurance could well save you money overall. It just depends on how many of the features your business will realistically use. This is a big card with big perks for the right business owner.

Hi Pauline, Does this card have an annual fee like the similar card, The Qantas American Express Ultimate Card, that has a 23.99% p.a. interest rate? Thankyou, Chelsea

Hi Chelsea, yep the annual fee is currently the same for both cards, $450. The Qantas Business Rewards card is for business use only, and comes with mostly business-related perks. Thanks Chelsea

Hi, I currently have an ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum Visa card that I use for my business as well as the odd personal purchase. I recently noticed the American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card and the 100000 points that new card applicants can receive if $3k is spent in the first 2 months which I would definitely do. Is the AMEX card a better option for earning FF points or should I stick with the ANZ card? Any advice would be great. Thank you

Hi Chadd, it really is a game of comparison. The ANZ has a cheaper annual fee but earns almost half the points per $1 of the Amex. So, you’d need to think about how much you typically spend and see if you’d earn more using the Amex even with the extra annual fee cost. Also, it’s a very normal practice to switch credit cards to access bonus points, and then switch back after a year or two (as long as your credit is good). I hope that’s helped, Chadd!
