The NAB Low Rate Platinum Credit Card

For some folks, there’s something a bit special about a platinum credit card. Offering much more than the bog-standard, run-of-the-mill credit card, a platinum card tends provide its cardholders with premium features and extras, often with a great offer thrown into the mix as well.

However, to enjoy all those lovely features, extras and offers, platinum cardholders will often pay more in interest and annual fees. So, as a cardholder, you make the choice: either a low cost card with minimal features, or a more expensive card with an array of extras.

Setting itself apart from the platinum pack, the NAB Low Rate Platinum Credit Card manages to straddle two categories. Not only does it offer awesome features and excellent introductory offers, it also happens to be relatively low cost.

What we love...

The NAB Low Rate Platinum Credit Card is designed to work as a low rate card for everyday purchases, offering additional platinum benefits. Right now though, this card also has the added bonus of 0% p.a. on purchases for 15 months.

That could help you save on interest on day-to-day purchases, or it could allow you to make a large purchase on your card, to then pay it off with zero interest throughout the introductory period.

While it’s a good idea to pay off any balance before it starts accruing interest, it’s nice to know that any purchases left unpaid at the end of the initial nine-month period on this card will revert to the card’s low purchase rate, rather than its much higher cash advance rate.

Have existing credit card debt you want to pay off? While it’s not the lowest balance transfer offer in town, the NAB Low Rate Platinum Credit Card does offer 0% p.a. on balance transfers for six months, with a one off 2% balance transfer fee.

Taking advantage of this offer, you could save on the interest you are currently paying – helping you pay down that debt faster – plus, NAB will now balance transfer up to 90% of your approved credit limit. It’s worth thinking about, for sure.

What’s not so great...

When applying for a credit card, it’s a good idea to think about any costs you will be expected to pay. This can include fees, such as the annual fee, and any interest that may be applicable.

The NAB Low Rate Platinum Credit Card has a sizeable annual fee, but it may compare favourably to other platinum cards. In terms of interest, while the purchase rate is low for a platinum card, the cash advance rate is significantly higher. This is worth keeping in mind, as any unpaid balance transfers revert to the cash advance rate, not the purchase rate.

Why should you choose this card?

If you want platinum benefits on a low rate card, the NAB Low Rate Platinum Credit Card could be for you. Aside from its introductory offers, the card provides a full suite of complimentary insurances.

These include overseas travel insurance, transport accident insurance, interstate flight inconvenience insurance and domestic hotel burglary insurance, as well as purchase protection, extended warranty and price protection.

On top of that, cardholders can enjoy up to 55 days interest free on purchases after the purchase offer ends, one free additional cardholder, 24/7 emergency travel assistance with Visa Customer Assistance Services, and exclusive benefits with Visa Front Line Access.

Overall Rating

An everyday low rate card offering convenient platinum benefits, plus 0% p.a. on purchases for 15 months and 0% p.a. on balance transfers for six months with a 2% balance transfer fee.

Hi Bhuwan, NAB have branches in many locations. Have a look here: https://www.nab.com.au/locations. Uber employment is common. This should be fine for proof of income. The bank will just send off any paper application to be processed. It will not be proceeded in branch. You would need at least 6 months but better a year with uber eats. They would want to see consistent income.

Hi Deen, you need to be operating at least 12 months before you should look to apply for a credit card. Ultimately it would be good to have a NOA from the ATO. That is, your business has completed at least 1 tax return as well.

Good day, I am with NAB, and was looking to get CC for 9000$, with initial purchase free period for at least 12 months. I have seen that there are CC for even 14 months free interest rate with other banks (St.George, Melbourne bank, Virgin...) but prefer to stay loyal to NAB, if will have anything close to that. Can you tell me what is the best at this moment, hopefully longer than 9 months that NAB can offer? Or in near future, please. Kind regards. Momir

Hi Momir, 0% for 9 months is the longest period available with on a NAB credit card offer. I have no word from NAB that they will look to bring out a longer 0% intro purchase period. I understand that you are thinking of being loyal to your current bank. Though as a consumer you always need to be looking for what deal is best for you. If you do need a longer 0% into period then the Virgin Flyer purchase offer looks good. I have loans with 2 different banks. I have credit cards with 4 different banks. Each credit card has a certain purpose. I have no loyalty to one brand just try to get the best I can out of each financial product. Banks are out there to make money and do very well. As a consumer we need to access our needs then go for the financial products that best suit, no matter what the bank.

I am an American traveling in Australia and I have slightly damaged my rental car. Am I insured through my Visa platinum United airlines card, and what would be covered?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    17 September 2018
Hi Larry, hope you are having a good time in Australia despite the slight accident with your rental car. You would need to contact your customer service or review the features of your United Airlines card. Most have overseas travel insurance and if you met the eligibility requirement should cover rental car excess. Best of luck with sorting it out.
