The Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card with up to 100,000 Bonus Qantas Points

Prestige cards can vary greatly in their offerings. Some provide only a handful of convenient features, while others are jam-packed with extras. After checking out the Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card, we’d have to say this card definitely falls into the latter category.

As a platinum rewards card, it offers a great earn rate, plus, new cardholders can benefit from up to 100,000 bonus Qantas Points and 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 18 months. And we haven’t even gotten started on all those lovely extras!

What we love...

First up, introductory offers. If you apply by 30 April 2019 for the Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card and spend $3,500 in the first 90 days from approval you will be awarded with 70,000 bonus Qantas Points. Once the annual fee is paid on the anniversary of the card approval, a remaining 30,000 bonus points will be awarded (allow up to 12 weeks to get these points).

Those points can be spent in the Qantas Store on more than 3,000 products, experiences and vouchers, or on flights and upgrades, potentially getting you from Melbourne to Algiers for 60,000 points, or from Sydney to Istanbul for 55,000 points.

Next, the balance transfer offer. If you have existing credit card debt that you want to pay off, you could transfer it to the Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card to enjoy 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 18 months.

Now, let’s move on to some of those fancy features and extras. As a cardholder, you will receive two invitations per year to selected Qantas Lounges, complete with complimentary food, beverages and Wi-Fi.

You can also enjoy discounted companion fares, where once a year, you can save up to 20% on selected domestic flights for you and up to eight companions.

On top of that, you could benefit from six months interest free on your first purchase of selected Qantas products and services, plus complimentary travel insurance for travel booked using your card.

What’s not so great...

When applying for a card such as the Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card, it’s worth bearing in mind how much it will cost you. The annual fee for each year is significant at $299, plus, for each additional cardholder, you will pay $50 per year.

It’s also worth taking note of the earn rate on the card, as the domestic spend is tiered, so that you earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 up to $10,000 per statement period, then 0.5 Qantas Point per $1 thereafter.

Why should you choose this card?

The Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card obviously has plenty to offer – and if you take advantage of its features and rewards, it may be worth the outlay. In terms of rewards, you can earn 1.5 Qantas Points per $1 on your international spend, 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent in Australia up to $10,000 per statement period, and 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 thereafter.

You can also benefit from 1 additional Qantas Point per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services, and there’s no points capping at home or overseas. Some other benefits worth mentioning include the Qantas Premier Concierge service, access to the Qantas Money app, and up to 55 days interest free on purchases.

Overall Rating

A platinum rewards card with excellent features and a great earn rate, offering up to 100,000 bonus points, 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 18 months. Offer ends 30 April 2019.

If using the Premier Plantinum card in the US how do the conversion fee's and rates compare to using a cash card like the Qantas cash card?Which would be the better card to use?Regards Chris

    22 March 2019
Hi Chris, with the Qantas Premier you are still charged foreign exchange fees. I would think that the Qantas Cash card conversion fees are not that great. I think they make there money on the exchange. Though with Qantas cash you are not charged foreign exchange fees. Using a card like the 28 Degrees is should provide a great rate with no foreign fees.

Are the lounge invitations able to be used by family as well as yourself?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    14 March 2019
Hi Helen, You are welcome to invite family, friends or a colleague to join you in the lounge. Domestic Australia and New Zealand Qantas Club - you may invite one guest to join you. International Lounge - you may invite one guest to join you. Both you and your guest need to be travelling together further that day on the same flight. In addition to the above, you may also be able to bring children into a Qantas lounge subject to the child access guide. If children are older than 18 they are considered as a guest. I found these terms on the Qantas lounge invitations https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/the-qantas-club/complimentary-invitations-terms-conditions.html

Hi Roland, if I reach $10,000 in the first statement, will my rewards go to 1 point per $1 in that same statement period or .5 points for the remaining money I spend?

Hi Anne, its only the points post the cap that will be at the lower rate. The first 10,000 are are the 1 point per $1. Then .5 post that. If you are a big spender this is an issue.

Hi Roland. I put in an application a couple of days ago and I am still waiting for a response on whether or not it has been approved. I am visiting Brisbane till Monday and failed to bring my application number with me. I spoke to someone on the supports team and they told me yesterday the application was being assessed. If you could help me as I have to book my flight next week. many thanks Barbara

    4 February 2019
Hi Barbara, thanks for reaching out. You will need to deal with Qantas Premier Platinum customer service directly as we are not the bank or issuer. Typically it takes 5-10 working days to process a credit card application. Hang in there. Hopefully you will have good news on your application soon.

Hi Roland, in your Review you list the second item in your 'Cons' list as - only travel insurance offer. I'm not certain what you mean by this, why is the free Travel Insurance a con?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    2 January 2019
Hi Larry, typically with a card around this annual fee you will get a full suite of insurance products. With the Qantas Premier you get the overseas travel insurance. This is fine if you have no need for any of the other complimentary insurance variations. Bottom line this is a great credit card for Qantas travelers. For myself personally, the only insurance I tend to use with a credit card is the overseas travel insurance.

    17 December 2018
Hi Mark, if you meet all eligibility and your daughter is travelling with you. Then she will be covered by the overseas travel insurance with the Qantas Premier Platinum credit card, as a dependent. Dependent Child/Children means either: a) Cardmember’s children up to and including the age of nineteen (19) who permanently reside with You, or b) Cardmember’s children from the age of nineteen (19) up to and including the age of twenty-five (25) who are full-time students attending an accredited institution of higher learning in Australia, and are dependent upon You for their maintenance and support and permanently reside with You when they are not attending the accredited institution of higher learning; or c) Cardmember’s child who is physically or mentally incapable of self-support upon attaining age nineteen (19) whilst they remain incapacitated and unmarried. I have found this PDF on the Qantas Money website that outlines full details of the insurance with this card. https://assets.qantasmoney.com/legals/qmoney/documents/Premier_Insurance_Terms.pdf

Hi Roland we spend about $100,000.00 a year on our CBA credit card and we are looking for a credit card that offers the best bonus points on purchases The CBA card is caped at 60,000 points per year and to convert these points to fly by pionts its 2.5 CBA points to 1 Fly by point

    30 October 2018
Hi John, for maximum sign up bonus then the ANZ Black Frequent Flyer card is worth a look. You earn 1 point per $1 on standard purchases up to $7,500 per month. This should be nearly enough based on your spend. The 120,000 bonus points are really nice. I really like the Qantas Premier Platinum card for Qantas flyers. The bonus points are halve but you have 10k a month at 1 point per $1 on points earning. Plus you have a range of bonus points available and other features. I cannot see how you can go wrong with this credit card. You can apply directly on the Qantas Money website - https://www.qantasmoney.com/credit-cards/premier-platinum. CBA earn rates are very low. Its definitely time to make the move to a more rewarding credit card.

Can you earn points from paying bills - i.e. gas electricity etc.
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    27 September 2018
Hi Gigi, An Eligible Transaction (which earns points) is any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi accounts, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges, government related transactions or transactions with semi-government entities or related services. An Eligible Transaction will be determined based on information provided either by the merchant or the relevant financial institution. For full definitions, terms and conditions, see Qantas Premier Credit Card Rewards Terms and Conditions.

Thanks for previous answers- excellent. TO pay $300 for a CC is a lot. If I spend say $36000 during the year, then apart from other benefits, the points cost up to 0.83 cents each. Therefore I want reward points to be worth quite a bit more than that, hopefully at least 1 cent. However, one web site shows several rewards in which the points are worth around 0.7 cents. In your opinion what is the effective value of points 'spent' on flight rewards?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    26 September 2018
Hi Paul, you need to look at the whole range of features when evaluating a credit card including any bonuses. Will you use the travel insurance or any other features, these have a value also. You need to include these when comparing. Though if the feature has no use for you, then it has no value. The bonus points are worth a chunk. also the $300 off bonus. $36,000 is not a huge spend for a premium card on the other hand. If you just want points and no annual fee then I suggest the AMEX Qantas Discovery. Great uncapped points earning with no annual fee so you truly get $1 point per $1 spend with bonus points on Qantas services also. There is no effective value of points in many cases as they are always changing. If you can redeem Qantas points for what would have been a much more expensive domestic flight then the points have more value. With many other programs what the points can redeem changes so that the value is changing. Bottom line you need to get a card that works for you and not overspend. Though you wont fully know a card is right for you until you have a go. If the card doesn't work out after 10 months evaluation then cancel the card and look at another.

1) May I talk by phone to someone about my questions? 2) Where can I find the 'selected Qantas products and services" that earn 2 points per dollar? Does this apply to all flight bookings? 3) Where are the details of 'Travel with friends.. once a year - domestic-and save up to 20%.' Does this mean each year my first Q flight booking will be discounted? HOw do I know if it is by 20% or a lesser figure? Thanks

    25 September 2018
Hi Paul, you can call Qantas money credit cards on 1300 992 700. 2) ‘Qantas Spend’ means Eligible Transactions made with the following merchants: flights booked directly through qantas.com and Qantas Contact Centres; Qantas flights booked through selected travel agents; Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership, joining and annual fees; Qantas Gift Vouchers; purchases from qantasstore.com.au , qantasshop.com.au and qantasepiqure.com.au . For full terms and conditions, see Qantas Premier Credit Card Rewards Terms and Conditions at www.qantasmoney.com/terms. 3) The Qantas Premier Platinum Primary Cardholder is entitled to the Companion Fare benefit once per year. Discount applies to selected domestic flights only when two to nine passengers (including the Primary Cardholder) travel together on the same booking number, day and flight(s). Flights must be booked through Qantas Premier Concierge and paid in full at the time of booking using the primary cardholder's Qantas Premier Platinum credit card. For full terms and conditions, see Qantas Premier Credit Card Airline Benefits Terms and Conditions. Hope this provides the more detail you require. This is a great card for Qantas flyers.

Hi Paul, it is like an annual fee rebate if you can use the full voucher. This gives again good reason to apply before Sept 30th. You can apply directly on the Qantas Money website - https://www.qantasmoney.com/credit-cards/premier-platinum. Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Refunds, Chargebacks and Special Promotions do not contribute to the spend threshold. The Flight Voucher will be sent to the email address on your Qantas Frequent Flyer profile within 6-8 weeks of meeting the spend criteria, and is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. Flight Voucher can be redeemed for one-way or return Qantas domestic or international flights departing Australia only, is non-refundable and cannot be used for multi-city, Classic Flight Rewards, Points Plus Pay- Flights, Points Plus Pay bookings, or redeemed for cash.

If using the Premier Plantinum card in the US how do the conversion fee's and rates compare to using a cash card like the Qantas cash card?Which would be the better card to use?Regards Chris

    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    11 February 2019
Hi Anne, its only the points post the cap that will be at the lower rate. The first 10,000 are are the 1 point per $1. Then .5 post that. If you are a big spender this is an issue.

Hi Roland. I put in an application a couple of days ago and I am still waiting for a response on whether or not it has been approved. I am visiting Brisbane till Monday and failed to bring my application number with me. I spoke to someone on the supports team and they told me yesterday the application was being assessed. If you could help me as I have to book my flight next week. many thanks Barbara

Is my 19 year old daughter who is at university covered by travel insurance on our trip to USA (tickets were purchased by card)

Thank you Sarah

Hi Sarah, Qantas Premier offers have jumped around a lot. I cannot be certain of what offer was in pay but the 80,000 Bonus points sounds right. It takes some time post you meeting the spend requirement before the bonus points are credited to your account. I hope you are enjoying your Qantas Premier Platinum credit card.

Hi Roland we spend about $100,000.00 a year on our CBA credit card and we are looking for a credit card that offers the best bonus points on purchases The CBA card is caped at 60,000 points per year and to convert these points to fly by pionts its 2.5 CBA points to 1 Fly by point

What does the Qantas Flight voucher offer. If it is $300 that means the card is free the first year?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    25 September 2018
Hi Paul, it is like an annual fee rebate if you can use the full voucher. This gives again good reason to apply before Sept 30th. You can apply directly on the Qantas Money website - https://www.qantasmoney.com/credit-cards/premier-platinum. To earn one $300 Qantas Flight Voucher, you must successfully apply for a Qantas Premier Platinum credit card by 30 September 2018, then spend $4,000 within 90 days from card approval.
