The Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card

Offering you the choice of two rewards programs, the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is a flexible credit card with an excellent range of platinum perks. Apply today and you’ll pay a discounted annual fee for the first year of $49, and benefit from up to 120,000 bonus Altitude Rewards Points - 90,000 pts when you spend $3,000 within first 90 days PLUS 30,000 pts when you keep your account for at least 12 months

What we love…

One of the great things about the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is its flexibility and that as a cardholder, you can choose to earn points on the Altitude program, or you can opt in to the Qantas program for an additional fee of $75. Regardless which program you choose, you can take advantage of up to 120,000 bonus points to get you started on your points-earning journey. In this review we will be taking a look at the Altitude Rewards. If you want to earn Qantas points instead, please have a look at Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card – Qantas.

To get your hands on those bonus points, all you need to do is apply and be approved by 31 July 2024, and then spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within 90 days of card approval (90,000 pts) and keep your account open for at least 12 months (30,000 pts). After you have reached that spend, the bonus Altitude points will be credited to your account within 12 weeks.

Altitude

So, should you choose Altitude or should you opt for Qantas? Let’s look at the Altitude program. If you opt in to Altitude, you can earn 1 Altitude point for every $1 you spend on eligible purchases. The points you earn can be redeemed within the Altitude Store for a wide range of gift cards, travel and products, such as tech, homewares and fashion.

Altitude Points earn rate on eligible purchases, uncapped:

  • Earn 3 Altitude points per dollar spent up to $10,000 per calendar month on flights purchased in Australia directly with Qantas and Jetstar, then 1 point per $1 spent thereafter.
  • Earn 2 Altitude Points per dollar spent on overseas spend and with Spotify Premium, Uber, Uber Eats and AirBnb.
  • Earn 1 Altitude Point per dollar spent on all other everyday eligible purchases.

Within the Altitude Store, you could redeem 100,000 Altitude points for $250 cashback (using 70,500 points), or you could opt for a gift card, redeeming 79,900 Altitude Points for a $340 Woolworths Supermarket e-Gift card. Point calculations are accurate but may be subject to change without notice.

Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is full packed with attractive offers. Aside from the bonus points offered, you will also enjoy all the card benefits and features with a discounted annual fee for a year. Pay $49 for the first year and save $126 ($175 ongoing annual fee). Both offers are available until 31 July 2024.

What’s not so great…

As with most rewards cards, the interest charge is not low and the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is no exception. With both the purchase rate and cash advance rate being relatively high, it’s best to avoid cash advances and to clear your balance month-to-month.

Why should you choose this card?

If you’re looking for a flexible rewards card with some nice extras on the side, the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card could be well worth looking into. As a cardholder, you will pay an affordable ongoing annual fee (for a platinum rewards card, at least) of $175 p.a.

You also have the opportunity to earn points faster, by adding one additional cardholder at no extra cost. As for features, cardholders can benefit from a range of complimentary insurance covers, including cover for overseas travel, extended warranty, purchase security, and transit accidents, as set out in the policy.

Overall Rating

The Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is a flexible rewards card with platinum perks and up to 120,000 bonus Altitude points on offer. Plus discounted annual card fee of $49 for the first year

Can I pay rent on this card ?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    26 May 2023
Hi Chur, technically, paying rent with your credit card is possible, but it ultimately depends on the payment preferences of your managing agent or landlord. It's important to note that there might be a transaction processing fee associated with it too. We have an article that explains how you can pay your rent using your credit card, which may be helpful to you.

Hi Pauline We are travelling to Thailand in July and have at this stage booked a oneway departure flight since we were using miles. We are about to book a return flight using a Westpac credit card. Are we eligible for the complimentary travel insurance since we are going to use the credit card for the return flight only? Thanks
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    19 May 2023
Hi Ursula, I checked this for you, and according to Westpac's official insurance PDS, in order to qualify for the international travel insurance coverage, the following criteria must be met: -At least $500 of your prepaid travel costs should be charged to the account holder's card before departing from Australia. -You need to be an Australian resident. -Your trip must both begin and end in Australia. -You must have a return ticket before departing from Australia. -The age limit for coverage is below 80 years. Hope this helps you have a relaxing trip!

Hi Pauline, very interested in complimentary international travel insurance. Does the insurance with this product include snow cover? If not, are you aware of any cards in the market that do? We currently have it with the Citi/Emirates card however this product will cease shortly. Thanks
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    30 April 2023
Hi John, it looks like snow is classed as a “dangerous activity” in the PDS for this card. As complimentary insurances are for general cover only, it might be worth researching 3rd party cover for your skiing trip.

Is the card holder the only one covered by the travel insurance?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    3 April 2023
Hi Mark, I checked the insurance terms of the Westpac Altitude Platinum card and found out that if the primary cardholder meets all the eligibility criteria, their spouse and dependents are also eligible for the insurance. However, each of them must meet the eligibility criteria individually to be eligible. For further information, you can view their official insurance PDS.

To receive a complementary travel insurance do I need to buy airfares with the credit card?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    24 March 2023
Hi Zlata, yes - you should spend at least “$500 on your prepaid travel costs and charge these costs to your card account before leaving Australia”. There’s also other eligibility requirements listed on Westpac’s Policy Information Booklet that you have to check off to be eligible for the complimentary international travel insurance. Enjoy your trip!

Hi Vandana, Velocity and Qantas Points are two separate loyalty programs available in Australia, with Velocity Points offered by Virgin Australia and Qantas Points offered by Qantas. You can earn points through both programs by using partner credit cards, flying with the respective airlines or their partners, and redeem points for flights, upgrades, and other rewards. To learn about the ins and outs of each program, you can check out our comprehensive guides on the Qantas Frequent Flyer Rewards Program and Velocity Frequent Flyer Points.

Hi Isabella, to apply for the Westpac Altitude Platinum credit card you must be over 18 years old, have permanent residency in Australia/NZ or hold an acceptable Visa (if non-resident or migrant), with a minimum 1 year before expiry and a minimum income of $30,000 p.a. Westpac will assess your overall ability to make repayments, so it’s important that you have a good credit standing and are financially healthy. Hi Kerri, it’s not stated on Westpac Altitude Platinum card’s terms the fee of adding another cardholder after the first free card. The T&C’s appear to read that you can only have one additional cardholder, as it is never mentioned as a plural. You can reach out to Westpac directly at 1300 651 089 for more information.

Hi Paul, indicated on the Westpac Altitude Platinum card’s terms, you’ll cop 3% foreign transaction fee. For the currency conversion, it’ll be dependent on the conversion rate at the time of transaction. It will also depend on whether you let the EFTPOS terminal convert your currency or use the Westpac rate for that day.
