Offering you the choice of two rewards programs, the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is a flexible credit card with an excellent range of platinum perks. If you are interested in earning Altitude points, check out the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card. Apply today and you can benefit from 70,000 bonus Qantas points when you spend $4,000 on eligible purchases within 90 days of card approval. Plus, discounted annual card fee of $99 for the first year ($175 thereafter) and annual $75 Qantas Rewards Fee.

What we love…

One of the great things about the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is its flexibility and as a cardholder, you can choose to earn points on the Altitude program, or you can opt in to the Qantas program. Here we will look at the Altitude Qantas program and if you are interested in earning Altitude points, have a look here.

All you have to do to get your hands on those bonus points is apply and be approved by 31 July 2024, and then spend $4,000 on eligible purchases within 90 days of card approval. Once you’ve made that spend, the bonus 70,000 points will be credited to your account within 12 weeks. Then it’s simply a matter of deciding what you want to spend them on.

Qantas

When you choose to earn Qantas points you opt in to the Qantas program, paying a $75 Qantas Rewards fee. Within this program, you can earn 0.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases*, to be redeemed within Qantas Store for merchandise and gift cards, or on travel products such as flights and accommodation.

Qantas Points are capped at $100,000 per year. Bonus Qantas Points excluded in the cap.

In terms of that 70,000 bonus points, it will get you further with Qantas, allowing you to fly from Perth to Singapore in economy class (56,512 points) or Sydney to London in economy class (66,200 points). You will also hand over fewer points for that $250 Woolworths Group WISH Digital Gift Card, redeeming just 54,550 Qantas Points.

What’s not so great…

As you will find with most platinum rewards cards, the interest charged on the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is not low. With both the purchase rate and cash advance rate being relatively high, it’s best to avoid cash advances and to clear your balance month-to-month.

As for points redemption, there are other credit cards on the market offering a higher earn rate on the Qantas program, but it’s up to you to work out which one offers the most back for your spend. With its reasonable annual fee, the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card may just offer a more rewarding option.

Why should you choose this card?

If you’re looking for a flexible rewards card with some nice extras on the side, the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card could be well worth looking into. Plus, a discounted annual card fee of $99 for the first year ($175 thereafter) and annual $75 Qantas Rewards Fee. Ongoing as a cardholder, you will pay a $49 annual fee for the first year ($175 thereafter) plus an annual $75 Qantas Rewards fee, for choosing to earn Qantas points.

You can also add one additional cardholder at no extra cost to earn points faster. Cardholders benefit from a range of complimentary insurance covers.

I have been charged $75 for a Qantas Rewards fee on my Westpac Mastercard. I have never opted for this and want to withdraw from it straight away!

Hi Joan, you’ve landed on CreditCard.com.au - Australia’s leading credit card comparison site. This $75 Qantas Rewards fee you’ve been charged, covers the cost Westpac incurs for you to accumulate Qantas Points when you use the card. The Westpac Altitude Platinum card doesn’t have this fee and you'll earn Altitude Points instead. To discuss any matters related to your account, you can call Westpac directly at 1300 651 089.

In regard to the minimum criteria to apply, it states "Good Credit and have not applied for multiple credit cards recently". I need more specific information about how many recent cards would be too many. I have of course had a few cards from other banks over the past 18 months and do not want to effect my credit score when applying just to be turned down.

    13 October 2023
Hi Andrew, great question but unfortunately there’s no hard and fast rule around this. The main reason is that the more credit applications you have, the riskier you look to credit providers. You should get a copy of your credit report and keep an eye on your score, your total debt to income ratio and your repayment history. That way you’ll know where you stand with the providers.

Hi Ian, I strongly suggest reaching out to Westpac directly at 1300 651 089 to check on the bonus points. But usually, the bonus points are added to your points balance within 12 weeks from the time you met the eligible spend requirement.

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    21 February 2023
Hi Ian, you and your partner/spouse will be eligible for the complimentary travel insurance cover when both of you individually meets all of the eligibility criteria listed in the Complimentary Insurance Policy Information booklet (for example, you’ve paid at least $500 of your travel costs on the card, you’re under 81, you have a return ticket, etc). You can also call Allianz Global Assistance (Westpac’s insurance underwriter) on 1800 091 710 for specific enquiries you may have about the travel insurance cover. Usually, you will know how much your credit limit will be when your application gets approved and it will depend on several factors like your credit standing and financial status. Thanks Ian!

If you are a self funded retiree can you get this card if You meet the minimum wage from our funds?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    10 February 2023
Hi Pru, it’s definitely not as straightforward if you’re earning money through a means other than your own business or PAYG, and it does depend on how you’re being self-funded. But yes, it’s possible you may be able to apply for the Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card – Qantas as a self-funded retiree. You’ll need to provide a copy of your superannuation statement or information regarding your assets and meet all other conditions and eligibility requirements to get approved. It’s best to speak directly with Westpac first so they can help you with your application.

Ref: Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card - Qantas. Is $99 the only Fee in the first year? or do I need to also pay extra $50 for the Qantas Rewards Fee?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    3 February 2023
Hi Martin, with the Westpac Altitude Platinum Qantas card, you will pay a total of $149 for the first year. This includes a $99 fee for the card and an additional $50 charge for Qantas Rewards. If this isn’t your thing, there’s a range of other Qantas Points credit cards that won’t charge you this fee.

If paying an ATO tax bill with the card, would this be included in the "eligible purchases"?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    21 June 2022
Hi Dave, I double checked Westpac Altitude Platinum Qantas card’s terms and it states that payments to a local or state or federal government or related agencies are not considered eligible. However, there are a few credit cards that earn points at the ATO that you can compare.

Can i change to qantas points at later stage ?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    12 May 2022
Hi Elaine, I checked Westpac Altitude card’s terms and it states that you can request to change between the rewards programs available to your card (e.g. Altitude to Qantas). Please note though that once it’s changed, you will automatically stop earning points in the previous rewards program and points earned before the change will not be converted in the new rewards program.

Hi there, I am looking at a Westpac Altitude Platinum credit card but have a couple of questions. It says you need to spend 4,000 on eligible purchases - what are these? i am looking to pay for a topdeck tour via credit card, would this count? And after the spend has been reached, how long does it take to receive the points? Thank you!
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    7 March 2022
Hi Cara, good question! There’s actually no specific list of what transactions are considered eligible but these are transactions like payments you make for your groceries, car’s petrol, doctor’s fee, restaurant bill, etc. If the Topdeck company processes your credit card like any other of the transactions mentioned above, it’ll be eligible spend. I double-checked Westpac Altitude Platinum’s terms and it states that eligible purchases do not include interest, fees, cash equivalent transactions, transactions to local, state, or federal government agencies, to name a few. The bonus points will actually be added to your points balance 12 weeks once eligible spend criteria has been met. Enjoy your tour!

Why is there a $50 fee for qantas rewards?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    6 January 2022
Hi there Andy, there are certain fees for transferring points and credit card processing fees behind the scenes for banks, which is why the card has a $50 Qantas rewards membership. Some credit cards come with no Qantas membership fees, but trade off with a higher annual fee.

Thanks so much for answering my question, Roland! I am interested why this charge has only come in in the last three years, I've been with Westpac and Qantas for years and was never charged it before - maybe this happened when Westpac changed their cards over (Westpac's idea, not ours) from Visa to Mastercard about three years ago? Interestingly, my partner has an Earth Black card but doesn't get charged this fee, although he does pay $125 annual fee (I pay $150).

Hi Roland, can you please clarify the $50 Qantas Rewards fee - who is charging this, Westpac or Qantas, and how do they justify the charge? I have spoken to both companies, and each swears it's being charged by the other! thanks!

    19 October 2021
Hi David, the $50 Qantas Rewards fee is charged by Westpac. But that payment is then paid to Qantas by Westpac for your Qantas membership. This way, you only need to pay one company, which in this case is Westpac and Westpac will take care of paying Qantas to ensure you have Qantas membership.

    25 November 2019
Hi Robert, its always a good idea to review the features of the card to ensure you are getting what you want. The switch from Visa to Mastercard itself from Westpac should not impact any features directly. Though cards do change over time. So just have a run through the features and earn rate on our page: https://www.creditcard.com.au/westpac-altitude-platinum-qantas-credit-card/

Hi there, I applied for and was approved for a Qantas Westpac Platinum card at the end of November and didn’t supply a Qantas FF membership as I haven’t joined Qantas FF. Am I too late? If I join today will they still credit the 60,000 bonus points I have qualified for? Are they back dated? Thanks :)

Join asap and supply to Westpac - should be all good as they have not tried to transfer the points yet.
