If we use the American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card to pay a Royal Caribbean Cruise balance for an Australian cruise in AUD will we be charged currency conversion fees or foreign transaction fees? I would think not because we are using an Australian issued card to pay for a service in AUD but Royal Caribbean have told me their may be fees as their AMEX bank is in the USA. Do you know any info?

    15 October 2018
Hi Mark, if you buy something in AUD but it is processed overseas then it is still considered an international purchase. Therefore an international transaction fee can apply. Based on what Royal have stated it appears to be the case. The AMEX Altitude does have foreign fees. Therefore if applicable they would be charged at 3%. I suggest that you give AMEX credit card customer service a call and speak to them directly. They can provide you with full confidence. They may not charge the international fee, then this would make it worth it for points. Few cards these days are foreign fee free. Have a look at the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure credit card. This is a travelers best friend with no foreign fees, no overseas ATM cash advance fees and a range of all the essential insurance.
