The Citi Rewards Mastercard Credit Card Review

Searching for an amazing introductory offer on an amazingly rewarding rewards card? Look no further than the Citi Rewards Credit Card. After a $3,000 minimum spend within 90 days of card approval, you will get 90,000 bonus Citi reward Points and a $100 Coles eGift Card. On top of that, you will pay a reduced annual fee of $49 for the first year, so you can enjoy even more value from the rewards and extras on offer.

What we love...

What would you do with an extra $100? With the Citi Rewards Mastercard Credit Card, you could soon find out. Opting in on this offer, you could get a $100 Coles eGift Card, which you can redeem at Coles Supermarkets and Coles Central. All you need to do is spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first 90 days from card approval, and you will receive your e-Gift Card.

Meanwhile, the other part of this offer helps you save on the card’s annual fee. Normally, this card has an annual fee of $149, but with this intro offer, that’s reduced to $49 for the first year. This kind of offer can be a great find on a rewards card, as it allows you to get more back from your rewards earn, while making good use out of all those lovely extras.

What’s not so great...

The main thing to take into consideration here are the costs you will have to cover to keep this card in your wallet. Think about the standard ongoing annual fee – and the sizeable additional cardholder fee if that applies to you – and work out whether the card offers good value in terms of the rewards you earn, and the extras you make use of.

Other costs in play include the card’s purchase rate and cash advance rate, which, like most rewards cards, are significant. With that being said, you really don’t want to be carrying a balance on a rewards card anyway, as it will reduce the value of the rewards you earn. To avoid worrying about the card’s interest rate, make sure you clear your balance each month.

Why should you choose this card?

Looking beyond the introductory offer, why should you apply for the Citi Rewards Credit Card? One of the great things about this option as a rewards card is its flexibility. You earn Citi rewards Points on everyday spending, to then enjoy the wide range of rewards on offer, with the option to convert your points to flybuys and a variety of highly regarded frequent flyer programs.

  • Earn 1 Citi rewards Point per $1 on all eligible transactions made overseas or online with a merchant that is based overseas
  • Earn 1 Citi rewards Point per $1 on all eligible transactions in Australia (up to $10,000 per statement period)
  • Earn 1 Citi rewards Point per $1 on all eligible transactions using Citi PayAll
  • Earn 2 Citi rewards Points per $1 on all eligible transactions made using the Linked Diners Club Card

Hi Roland, if I have a Kogan credit card which seems under Citibank. Can I still get the 90,000 points if I have spent $3000 in 3 mths.

Hi Jing, great question. You’re right that Kogan credit cards are underwritten by Citi among others. However, when it comes to rewards programs and points, they’re completely different. So if you qualify and meet the eligibility criteria, you could still bank those points. Hope this helps!

For cash repayment, how many dollars can 5000 reward points get?

    2 August 2021
Hi Terry, we just checked the Citi site, and at the time of replying, 2,500 rewards points is equal to $10 when you choose to Pay with Points. Pay with Points allows you to use rewards points to contribute towards your statement. You can also redeem your points for eVouchers and travel but the “value” of these will vary depending on the shop you choose.

Hi Lorence, direct debit payments are eligible for points they same way regular transactions are. You can find the list of eligible transactions on Citi's website here. I hope that helps.

Do I get points and rewards if I'm using my credit card to pay for business expenses, rent, or utilities? What counts as eligible spending and what's not? Is there a page on creditcard.com.au that has consolidated information on this?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    12 March 2021
Hi Christy, for Citi Mastercards, eligible transactions exclude, but are not limited to: Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi accounts, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges, transactions made using Points and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs). Please note that whether or not a transaction is an Eligible Transaction will be determined based on information provided either by the merchant or the relevant financial institution (including information about the type of business conducted by the merchant). This means that, for example, spend with certain merchants may be characterised as spend with a government related entity and therefore not an Eligible Transaction, even if that merchant is not in fact a government related entity. Eligible transactions also exclude any Citi PayAll Payments (for Domestic Spend only, International Spend is excluded) but excludes any transaction that you are not permitted to make under your Account Terms and Conditions.
