This Card: The Lowdown

While American Express companion cards used to be pretty common within big bank offerings, most have been pulled back over recent years. How it generally worked with those bundles was you would apply with the bank, and the bank would issue you with a general bank-branded card alongside a bank-branded American Express card. Today, things work a little differently.

When you sign up for this American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card Bundle, you are actually applying for two separate credit cards – one that is issued and serviced by Westpac, and one that is issued and serviced by American Express. Each card has its own fees, interest rates and earn rates, however, the Velocity Points you earn on each card are pooled within one account. Of course, you can also benefit from the extras each card offers, such as lounge access and flight upgrades.

While it may seem like a somewhat complicated setup, it could work for you. As long as you understand how to make the most of all of those extras – while channelling a hefty spend through each card – you may be able to make the substantial combined annual fee worthwhile.

Digging Deeper

With the basics covered, it’s time to dig a little deeper into what’s on offer with the American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card Bundle, so you can decide whether it’s right for you.

This Card: As a Rewards Card

Making the most of the rewards on offer means first understanding how this bundle works. While these two cards may be bundled together, they are in fact, two separate cards. With each card serviced either by Westpac or by American Express, it essentially means you have two separate card accounts.

When it comes to earning points, each card has its own Velocity Points earn rate. So, you will need to choose which card you want to use for each purchase to make the most of that points earn. The Velocity Points you earn on each card will then be credited to your Velocity account separately, to be used as you see fit.

Bonus Points

Signing up for the American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card Bundle, you can take advantage of a pretty impressive collection of bonus points. As long as you meet the minimum spend requirement, you could get your hands on up to 100,000 bonus Velocity Points.

Before we get into anything else, let’s look at eligibility.

  • Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the past 12 months, are not eligible for the Westpac bonus points offer.
  • Cardholders who currently hold or who have previously held any other American Express Westpac Altitude Card product issued by American Express in the past 18 months are considered ineligible for the American Express bonus points offer.

So, as long as you’re eligible, what do you need to do to get those points?

  • For the Westpac bonus points offer, you will need to spend at least $4,000 on eligible purchases using the Westpac Mastercard within 90 days of card approval. Doing this, you will be credited with 80,000 bonus Velocity Points within 12 months of meeting the spend criteria.
  • For the American Express bonus points offers, you will need to spend at least $3,000 on eligible purchases on your American Express card within 90 days of card approval. Doing this, you will be credited with 20,000 bonus Velocity Points within 8-10 weeks of meeting that minimum spend.

Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, payments to the Australian Tax Office, BPAY, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

Want to know where your bonus points could take you?

  • You could fly to Bali, redeeming 86,000 Velocity Points for a Return Economy Reward Seat from Sydney to Bali including Taxes and Fees (additional carrier charges apply).
  • You could fly to Los Angeles, redeeming 89,000 Velocity Points + $333.76 for a Return Economy Reward Seat from Melbourne to Los Angeles including Taxes and Fees (additional carrier charges apply).
  • You could fly to Hong Kong, redeeming 98,000 Points for a Return Economy Reward Seat from Sydney to Hong Kong including Taxes and Fees (additional carrier charges apply).

This special introductory offer ends 31 March 2020.

Status Points

Before we get into everyday earning on this bundle, let’s take a quick look at Status Points. Within the Velocity program, there are four levels of membership. Starting at entry-level Red, you can then work your way up to Silver, Gold, and then Platinum status.

To upgrade tiers, you need to take a certain number of flights each year, earning a certain number of Status Points. Then, depending on your membership status, you will receive tiered benefits when you travel. The higher your level of membership, the better the benefits you will receive.

Earning Points

Within the American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card Bundle, each card has a different earn rate, as follows:

  • With the Westpac Mastercard, you will earn 0.75 Velocity Points per $1 spent in Australia and overseas. This is uncapped, but bear in mind, you need to pay an additional Altitude Velocity Fee of $50 per year to access the Velocity program using this card.
  • With the American Express card, you will earn an uncapped rate of 1.25 Velocity Points per $1 spent in Australia, 2 Velocity Points per $1 spent overseas, and 0.5 Velocity Points per $1 spent at government bodies in Australia such as Australia Post and the ATO.

On top of the points you earn using each card, you can boost your points earning when spending on Virgin products and with Velocity partners. You can earn Velocity Points on eligible flights with Virgin Australia and airline partners, such as tigerair, Delta Air Lines, Singapore Airlines and Etihad.

In terms of travel partners, these include Virgin Australia Holidays, Jetpets, Discovery Holiday Parks and Skybus, as well as Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty and a range of hotels. Meanwhile, everyday partners include BP, Virgin Mobile, Virgin Active, Sendle, Envirobank and ride-sharing Ola.

Redeeming Points

When it comes time to redeem your points, you have a multitude of options available to you. You could redeem your points for flights around the world, or for upgrades with Virgin Australia. You could redeem them for products and gift cards at the Velocity Rewards Store, for sporting gear at onsport.com.au, or to pay for fuel at BP. Other redemption options include using points for car hire with Europcar, for hotel stays, or for holiday packages with Virgin Australia Holidays.

This Card: As a Travel Rewards Card

As a black card package, you expect a nice range of extras when signing up for the American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card Bundle. Here are the highlights.

Economy X Seat Upgrades

As a cardholder, you will get two complimentary Economy X Seat Upgrade Vouchers each year to use on selected domestic Virgin Australia flights. To receive the upgrades, you need to provide your Velocity Frequent Flyer number, and make a direct spend at Virgin Australia on your Westpac Mastercard each year.

After making that spend, your vouchers will be available in your Velocity Frequent Flyer account within 10 business days. They are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. To redeem the vouchers, you need to book an eligible domestic Virgin Australia flight using your Westpac Mastercard, and then call Virgin Australia Guest Services to apply the upgrade.

Lounge Access

Thanks to its bundle status, the American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card Bundle offers cardholders up to four lounge passes a year.

With the American Express Card, you will get two complimentary visits each year to the American Express Airport Lounge at Sydney or Melbourne International Airports. All you need to do is present your card and boarding pass at either lounge to gain admission. Complimentary access is available for your children between the ages of 2-17.

With the Westpac Mastercard, you will get two complimentary single entry Virgin Australia Domestic Lounge Passes each year you make a direct spend at Virgin Australia using your card. Your passes will be available in your account within 10 business days of making that spend, and are valid for 12 months.

Complimentary Insurance Cover

Like most platinum and black cards, this card bundle offers complimentary insurance cover on travel and retail purchases. While this cover comes with certain exclusions and limits – read the PDS for more – you could benefit from the following:

  • Overseas travel insurance, offering cover on medical and hospital expenses incurred overseas, loss or damage to personal property, loss or damage to travel documents, personal liability cover, rental vehicle excess cover, and unexpected cancellation of travel arrangements.
  • Transit accident insurance.
  • Purchase security insurance, offering four months cover against loss, theft or accidental damage on items purchased on either card.
  • Extended warranty insurance, offering up to 24 months extended warranty insurance cover (in addition to the manufacturer's expressed Australian warranty) on items bought on either card.

Personal Concierge Service

With the Westpac Mastercard in your wallet, you will have access to your very own personal assistant, available 24/7 and accessible via the app or the Altitude Black Card Priority Service line. Whether you need help booking flights, organising accommodation for your next trip, or finding the perfect gift for someone special, your concierge could make that happen.

Other Extras

As a cardholder, you could benefit from extras such as access to special deals through Amex Offers, pre-sale tickets through American Express Invites, and all sorts of lovely offers through Westpac Extras.

This Card: The Essentials

As you would expect, the American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card Bundle has quite a bit of small print to wade through. While it may be tedious, reading through it all will help you better understand the card, helping you work out whether it’s right for you, and how to make the most of it.

In terms of numbers, the minimum annual income to apply for this bundle is $75,000, with a minimum credit limit of $15,000 on the Westpac Mastercard, and $3,000 on the American Express. You will also have to factor in the card’s annual fee, which at a total of $499, is by no means insignificant.

While you can get up to 45 days interest free on purchases on both cards, it is worth noting that both cards have high interest rates. Lastly, you should expect two credit checks as you are essentially applying for two separate cards.

Decision Time

The American Express Westpac Altitude Black Card Bundle could be a great find for those who have a big enough spend to make the total annual fee worthwhile. The everyday earn rate is competitive, and the bonus points offer provides a nice chunk of points. Extras are focussed on travel, but to make the most of them, you will need to read the small print.
