The Westpac Low Fee Credit Card

Marketing itself on the fact that it offers up to 55 days interest free on purchases, the Westpac Low Fee Credit Card is a basic credit card with one very enticing introductory offer. New cardholders benefit from $0 annual fee for the first year.

Plus, customers approved for a new Low Fee credit card between December 12, 2023, and April 30, 2024, can get $100 cashback. Simply spend $100 or more on gift cards through Shopback.com.au within 90 days of card approval and the $100 cashback will be credited to your credit card account within 60 days of meeting the minimum spend requirement.

What we love...

If you are unsure of your ability to keep to a repayment schedule, Westpac’s SmartPlan tool may be able to help. With SmartPlan, you can apply a manageable repayment plan to your outstanding purchase or cash advance which could make it easier for you to pay off your credit card balance within a set period of time.

SmartPlan could be a great option for paying down a purchase balance, but it may also be useful if you purchase a big ticket item on your Westpac Low Fee Credit Card. You can start and stop the SmartPlan whenever you need, and you can use SmartPlan to track and manage as many as eight separate credit card balances or large purchases at once.

What’s not so great…

As mentioned previously, if you are unable to clear the transferred balance within 12 months, the remaining amount will accrue interest at the higher cash advance rate.

In general, the Westpac Low Fee Credit Card has a relatively high rate of interest on purchases and cash advances.

Why should you choose this card?

There are several reasons why you might choose the Westpac Low Fee Credit Card. There's also the optional SmartPlan tool that could make it easier for you to manage large purchases and balances by breaking them down into regular instalments.

As a new cardholder, you will pay no annual fee in the first year. In following years, the card’s standard annual fee will be waived, as long as you spend $5,000 on the card within that 12 month period. The card also offers basic features, like the ability to lock your card if you misplace it, to set up auto-payments, and to use a Mobile Wallet and leave your card at home.

Overall Rating

Providing all the basic features you need on a simple, no frills credit card, the Westpac Low Fee Credit Card’s big incentive is its offering of $0 annual fee for the first year.

Have had this type of Westpac card for many years. One thing is that Westpac do not keep you notified of the running year to date total of the amount you have spent on your card. Thus you are never sure where you are with respect to meeting the $5000 amount on time.

0% on purchases 5 months. If you want to do the balance transfer thing make sure you know if you don’t pay it off it will go to the cash advance rate which is pretty high. Low annual fee. Good card.

Why is your website so difficult to see? You have light grey writing on a white screen. It is extremely difficult to read anything on your site and it gives me a headache.

Hello Roland, Is government fees/visa fees constituted as a purchase?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    12 March 2021
Hi Osama, while it doesn't specify for this Low Fee Credit Card specifically. For other Westpac cards, eligible purchases exclude: interest, fees and charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, a purchase from or payment to a local, state or federal government or government related agency, BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay), refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account. I hope that helps.

so if i was to not make a purchase in the 15 months is there any other costs? and what about future cancelations? is there a minimum time period to have the card
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    10 February 2021
Hi Chloe, If you were to not make a purchase in the first 15 months, you would have to pay the annual card fee of $30. In order to be eligible for the $0 annual fee, you have to spend at least $5,000 over the course of the year. In terms of cancelling this card, or any credit card, there is no minimum amount of time you must have it before cancelling. Please keep in mind, however, that each time you apply for a credit card it leaves a mark on your credit file and having too many enquiries could hurt your chances of being approved for a card or loan in the future.

I have had for many years, a No Fee Credit Card. As aged pensioners we only use this card for on line purchasers. Cash is deposited to this account when needed to cover costs. At no time do we use the credit. It is inconvenient for us to have to notify our 8 regular purchasers, having only recently received an updated card. Is it possible for us to retain the card we have. Thank you.

Just to clarify, if I make a purchase for let’s say $5000 soon after I get this card, I won’t have to pay any interest on this purchase for 15 months from the moment the card is activated....did I understand this correctly?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    28 September 2020
Hi Alessandro, you wont pay interest on purchases until post the 15 months from card approval. Any purchase balance that remains at that time. Will switch over to the current purchase rate. So you need to ensure you pay your balance off in full or look to a balance transfer at that time.

Good morning.my credit history has not been great but I'm looking into getting a credit card.I've been working now for two years and would like to achieve a better rating.what are my chances of getting a credit card

Hi Stephanie, without good credit it is difficult to be approved for a credit card in Australia. What I would do is speak to your everyday bank where your pay is deposited. See if they can offer you a card with a small balance as a starting point. Then you can grow from there.

What is the maximum balance transfer amout.
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    27 May 2015
Hi Allan - it all relates to your credit limit your are approved for. This product has a minimum limit of $1,000 and a maximum of $30,000. You will be assigned a credit limit based on your personal history / income less expenses. If you are looking for a balance transfer from Westpac, may I suggest the Westpac Low Rate product which has 0% for 16 months on the balance transfer. If you are looking for a no annual fee balance transfer, then check out our no annual fee section. If you are keen on this Westpac 55 day product, word on the street is that this product offer is being updated next week which a much stronger balance transfer, therefore check back on the site next Thursday.

    12 March 2014
Hi Greg, if you meet the general application criteria as listed on the right side of this page and that you have a reasonable debt-to-assets ratio, you can apply for this credit card. However, Westpac may have varying lending criteria for pensioner applications. Check out our page on credit cards for pensioners for a breakdown on what the big banks will generally require on pensioner credit card applications.

How long after i get this westpac 55day classic cc can i increase my credit limit?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    17 June 2013
Hi Stephen, there's no 'hard and fast' rule around this, but if you opt in to receive credit limit requests (you can do so in online banking or by contacting the bank) you will automatically receive reminders on a regular basis. It is a good idea to consider all your options before increasing your credit limit, so if necessary seek financial advice first or talk to other lenders. Hope that helps.
