The Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer card is perfect for travellers on Virgin domestic - simply for the buy 1 get 1 free offer on flights - which you can use four times a year! Just make sure you plan and book well in advance as you might not be available to fly when you want to. If you manage this it easily justifies the annual fee - which is pretty reasonable considering. The BT rate is good too if you're planning to transfer a balance - make sure you do it within the 8 months though or its going to catch the high interest rate. The points earning on the card is capped at 1 point per $1 spent up to $1,500 each month, so that does limit your annual points ability - after that $1,500 its only 1 point per $2. The 1 for 1 complimentary flights should again make up for this.

Pros

  • 0% balance transfer rate for 8 months
  • Receive points when you use your card on purchases
  • Get complimentary transit accident insurance

Cons

  • Balance transfer rate reverts to cash advance rate
  • Annual fee after first year is $129

If you want to get virgin points then this is a good choice. I fly mostly virgin and this gets me 1 point for every dollar. It does have the restriction that stops you earning as many points after you spend $1500 in a month but you still earn points after that.

To pay the balance each mth can I link this in with my current Internet banking?

    • user pic

      Roland

      May 1st, 2013 at 9:00am

Hi Dave, you would be able to set up a direct debit from your bank account yes. Simply log on to Virgin Money, click ‘My Account’ then ‘Manage My Accounts’ and ‘Manage My Payment Options’ then download and fax back the simple ‘Direct Debit Autopay’ form. You can also set up BPay transfers from another bank account. Instructions are on the Virgin website and on your statements. You should need the card number and details and if you do BPay, the BPay biller code. Another option is to set a calendar reminder for you to pay your statement on a certain date each month. Hope that helps.

What is the maximum allowed to transfer across from other cards?

    • user pic

      Roland

      April 8th, 2013 at 10:04am

Hi Jan, there is no maximum stated, but balance transfers with Virgin are limited to 80% of your available credit limit. Your credit limit is approved based on Virgin/Citibank lending criteria and what the bank deems you can afford based on what you put on your application.

How long after transfering to this card can you take the buy one get one free flights?

    • user pic

      Roland

      April 2nd, 2013 at 11:39am

Hi Maria, according to the terms and conditions for this program the customer contact centre will advise when you go to book whether seats on the dates you want are available. Do keep in mind that to get this offer you also need to book at least 21 days in advance. You will still pay a booking and service fee, and the flights do not ‘roll over’ either, so if you didn’t take them in the first year, you will only get the same amount (up to four single-leg journeys) in the next year, and not double. Hope that helps.

Can I earn Velocity points on the amount of the transfer balance?

    • user pic

      Roland

      March 11th, 2013 at 9:10am

Hi Lynn, unfortunately balance transfers are not an eligible transaction. As per the terms and conditions an eligible transaction is defined as: “any Retail Purchase which is made by the use of a Card or any other means permitted by us, excluding (but not limited to) Transactions by way of Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, fees, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, interest charges, government charges, insurance charges, payments to loan accounts, purchases in excess of limits on the Account, transactions made in operating a business and if the Account is more than $10,000 in credit only, all other transactions.” Hope that helps.

with the buy 1 flight get one free does it have to be on the same flight or can I use that free flight to return on or on another day or booking or travel time ?

    cheers

    • user pic

      Roland

      February 14th, 2013 at 1:57pm

Hi Jason, yes you do both have to take the same flight at the same. The deal is for a complimentary flight on the same seat. The advertising material says you can do this ‘up to four times a year’ but you could also use this to book a return flight somewhere twice per year, which is more likely how someone would take advantage of this offer and how we have read it described by other commentary). It has proved quite popular with Virgin customers!

is interest calcuated on the card fee as well? and is it true that this isn’t paid off unless the balance transfer is paid?

    • user pic

      Roland

      February 14th, 2013 at 2:37pm

Hi Alana, while technically the annual fee may appear as a transaction, or purchase, the bank is legally required to allocate your first payment to this before any balance transfer amount. This is because the purchase rate (attached to the annual fee) is higher than the balance transfer rate where a special balance transfer rate exists.

The law states that payments must be allocated to the amount with the highest interest rate first, which means the annual fee can’t be paid off after the balance transfer. Hope this helps?
If you notice interest charged on an annual fee when you don’t have other balance owing you should always query this with your bank.

does this card have a cap on how many points you can have, and do points expire?

    • user pic

      Roland

      January 23rd, 2013 at 8:34am

Hi Becky, it has no points cap, and the earn thresholds are 1 point per $1 spent up to $1,500 spend per month, then 1 point per $2 spent above $1,500. Points won’t expire as long as you’re an active Velocity Frequent Flyer member (the Virgin Velocity membership – not using the card) and earn or use points at least once in a 3 year period.
