Virgin Money, BOQ and NAB

In 2013 the Virgin Money brand in Australia was acquired by BOQ, which also has an underwriting relationship with NAB.

About Virgin Money

Here in Australia we were the first country outside Virgin Money headquarters in the UK to carry the Virgin Money brand of credit cards. Virgin Money now offers all consumer banking products in some way, from savings accounts to car insurance and superannuation.

The Virgin Money suite of products is attached to the Velocity Rewards program, and there is also a no annual fee card as well as a low rate card. Because of its relationship with NAB you can transfer a personal loan balance onto a Virgin Money credit card. But you wont be able to earn points on that. The Virgin Group has also been supportive of credit card transparency and reforms within the Australian market that require fees and charges to be reported upfront, as well as better and more detailed information on monthly statements.

History

Virgin Money has now had credit cards in the Australia market for a number of years, since 2003 in fact. Australia was the first country Virgin Money decided to operate in outside the UK. The group has seemingly gone from strength to strength in the Australian money market, and in 2011-2012 plans to enter the insurance and mortgage markets. Car insurance, Life Insurance, Superannuation and Savings Accounts are already offered, and while the Home Loans business has started, Virgin Money has teamed up with Bank of Queensland Limited for those looking for a new home loan.

Sir Richard Branson, the Virgin Group’s outspoken founder and face of the brand, has declared his intention to make Virgin Money a bank. Plans are also well underway in the UK. In 2009 Virgin Money merged with UK bank Northern Rock and in 2010 it purchases the Church House Trust, and this has been considered one of the major steps towards becoming a bank.

Virgin Credit Cards

Operating out of Australia, UK, USA and South Africa, Virgin Money is a financial services provider under the umbrella of the Virgin Group. Determined to provide great-value products and to give customers what they really want, Virgin is an excellent choice as a credit card provider.

If you are after an affordable option for your next credit card, take a look at the Virgin Money No Annual Fee card or the Virgin Money Low Rate card. With the first option, you will pay no annual fee ever, and with the second option, you can enjoy low ongoing interest rates.

If you're more of a points collector, the Velocity Flyer and the Velocity High Flyer will let you keep the points coming. They offer 0.66 and 1 point per dollar respectively, with the annual fees reflecting the points earning power.

Credit card products in Australia are distributed by Virgin Money Australia in an agreement with NAB. This remains the case even after the acquisition of Virgin Money by Bank of Queensland in 2013.

Hi Molly, the best credit card for you comes down to how you will use it. We’ve written a comprehensive guide that lists out the requirements for pensioners from the main banks in Australia. You might be able to set up autopayment of your card depending on the account you’re transferring from. Hope this has helped!

Hi, I'm a permanent resident in Australia but all of my income is from the United States. That's Social Security and Investment Income. Can I qualify for this credit card with that as my only income?

    26 August 2021
Hi Joann, as long as you can provide documents as proof of your income, and have met the eligibility criteria, you may apply. Virgin may ask for extra details including any details of your accounts back in the US, or even the details of your accountant. Let us know how you go

    27 May 2020
Hi Rachel, age is a factor but employment and expenses are much more important. If you are 69 and still working. You have the same application criteria of someone that is 30. If you have low income, then I like the Westpac Low Rate or cards like it. It has a low 15k minimum income and can accept the pension as part or all of the income. Though key will be income v expenses. If you are putting away any money to see that you can afford the payments.

Can I please borrow small amount for my holiday on September?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    20 August 2018
Hi Huu, it could be possible. Your credit approval is accessed at the time of application. Based on the information you provide in the application and the bank verifying the details. Virgin have a 0% for 14 month offer on purchases. If approved, you could spend on your holiday and not pay any interest on the card until near 2020.

I am on a disability support pension and I am looking for a new bed, am I eligible to apply for the Virgin low rate credit card without concerns or are pensioners excluded from applying for this type of card?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    1 June 2018
Hi Timothy, the disability pension is seen by Virgin as income. Therefore it is possible to apply for this card. Approval will depend on a range of factors such as income v expenses, assets v liabilities and your credit history.

I want to BT $42,000 overdraft to a 0% credit card for at least a 2 year period. Do you have anything available? Thank you
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    6 November 2017
Hi Graham, a balance transfers needs to be between the same legal person. Therefore the overdraft will need to be in your name to transfer. Have a look at the Citi Rewards Platinum. This accepts non-Citi loan debt for balance transfer. A 42k balance transfer is large but is possible subject to credit approval and the limit allocated. Best of luck with your application.

Hi Roland. I hold a 457 visa but not yet a permanent resident. I have a credit card debt of $27K with CBA paying high interest for several months now. I wish to apply for BT with any bank that will approve my application, given that i am not a permanent resident yet. I am interested in 0% BT for 20-24 months, 0% p.r and low p.r. after the 0% BT promo repayment period ends. Please help me calculate a reasonable affordable repayment budget. My annual income is about 70K and employed full time. Thank you!

    25 November 2015
Hi Maggie as per my response to your other card question, I think HSBC could be the go but the long balance transfer is out the window I believe. You could call various banks to see what they think. NAB also have been open to 457 holders and they might be a chance as well. Best of luck.

Do you lose your low interest balance transfer rate if you use the card before it is paid off?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    14 May 2014
Hi Mark, if you make purchases on a card with a transferred balance you simply will not be able to take advantage of any interest free days available from that credit card. Simply put, the low balance transfer amount will remain accruing the introductory interest rate while any purchases or cash advances you make on that credit card will incur their respective interest charges. It is generally not recommended to spend on your balance transfer card so you take full advantage of ridding yourself of the credit card debt outstanding, but you will not 'lose' the low interest balance transfer rate until the end of the intro period.

can I still recive a credit card whilst I am on a benefit, ie centerlink? I would only apply for a small amount, $1000.
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    7 August 2013
Hi Barry, there are credit cards available with low income thresholds. Both ANZ and Westpac have cards with limits as low as $15,000 and the NAB doesn't set a minimum income, rather your application would be assessed according to what your income and expenses are and what the bank thinks you can afford. You just need to check the minimum income requirement for any card you consider before applying. Why don't you see what comes out from our card comparison tool finder tool? Just make sure you use the advanced search option and add in your Centrelink income to see what comes up. Good luck.
