The rewards offering on this card is quite reasonable, but the annual fee is actually pretty high, especially when the standard HSBC card has no annual fee ever. For your $199 you get two visits to the Qantas Club Lounge per year, a concierge service, and just two points per $1 spent overseas. That's nowhere near as generous as some of the offerings from the other banks, which go as high as 4 points per $1 spent overseas. Frequent travellers will get some benefit out of this card in terms of rewards - and once again as with other HSBC products the balance transfer offer is a good one. If you're someone who always pays the full balance owing every month, then this card would be a decent option for you.

Pros

  • 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 6 months
  • Bonus rewards points when you sign up for this credit card

I travel a fair bit and I wanted a credit card that would give me some good rewards and a few perks. I chose this card because it basically gave me everything I wanted. The annual fee is a bit steep, but I think I get my moneys worth.

Hi Kalianna, I think your reply dated 11/06 is incorrect. I've checked your site page on complimentary insurance ( which I should have done before asking my question - sorry about it ), and the answer is no. To be sure I visited HSBC site and found terms and conditions there - insurance clearly only covers cardholder.

Hi again Eugene, spouses and dependants travelling with you are covered under this policy. PP.32-33 of the policy document (Part B - international travel insurance 'Who is Covered?') clearly states that spouses are covered under this policy provided the ticket was purchased with the card (purchasing the ticket on the card is a requirement to activate cover for yourself anyway). Please see the following extract from the policy document: " If the cardholder has paid for their overseas return travel ticket as outlined above, this cover extends to the cardholder’s spouse and their dependent children provided they have also had their overseas return travel tickets paid for in the above manner, and the spouse and/or dependent children are travelling with the cardholder for the entire journey." It is very rare that this is not the case, but there may be times when a spouse is not covered (i.e if the ticket had not been purchased with the card). This is why it's so important to check out terms and conditions thoroughly, and it's not always easy to find what you're looking for straight away. For your convenience I've included a link to the policy document here - If you have any further questions feel free to ask us to look into them for you. Cheers, Kalianna

Hi Eugene, most policies do cover the spouse. To read more about free travel insurance with credit cards, make sure you visit our page on complimentary travel insurance. It gives you key information and a comparison of what the major providers offer.

If the balance I want to transfer is from a woolworths Qantas credit card, is this still fine ?

Hi James, unfortunately HSBC underwrites the credit cards for Woolworths, so you'd have to look at other non-HSBC options we're afraid. To understand more about the underwriting relationship, have a look at our useful table under the section 'which banks can't I do a balance transfer to'. It shows you which banks have relationships where you won't get the promotional balance transfer rate. Good luck!

I recently got this card and there seems to be a security flaw whereby at POS transactions you don't have to enter a PIN number. I've tried to activate the card as PIN only, but HSBC tell me that it's not a feature and I'll just have to sign at POS. Can you shed any light on this? Seems like a bit of an issue if my card gets lost or stolen...

Hi Tom - we're unaware of this particular issue with HSBC credit cards, but in general just because a card is activated for chip and pin doesn't mean there will never be a signature as there are still places in the world which don't have chip and pin technology and you have to sign. It shouldn't mean that the pin doesn't function. Having said that, it would be rare that a point of sale transaction in Australia today didn't allow you to use a pin unless it was a 'tap and go'. Where did the salesperson require a signature? Has it happened at multiple places? If you want to send us an e-mail please do: editor@creditworld.com.au We need to follow this up with a little bit of investigation with the banks and will get back to you with another reply shortly. Thanks!

Hi, I have a Woolworths QANTAS mastercard which is issued through HSBC Bank. Will I still be eligible for the 20,000 Frequent Flyer points if I apply for this card?

Hi Peter, sorry for the delay in getting a response to you. You cannot transfer a balance to this product from your Woolworths card, but you can apply for it separately as a new customer of HSBC.

I am interested in applying for this card. I am already a member of QANTAS FF program - will I still receive the 20000 bonus points? I do not have QANTAS club membership will I still be able to use the complimentary visits to the QANTAS club lounge?

Hi Leigh, yes you will earn the points if you don't have an existing HSBC Platinum Qantas card. You don't need the membership of Qantas club to use the visits, they're an added privilege of the credit card.

Can you pay bills on this card (ie water, phone, gas etc) and still earn points as you can on the woolworths credit card?

Hi Zoe, I checked the HSBC site and there is nothing to say you cannot. It does say you cannot earn points by paying through BPAY and for paying any government fees or charges. Utilities are not mentioned. The Woolworths card is underwritten by HSBC, so may be the same on the bill payments.

Hi Ian, if you are asking whether this card is linked to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, yes it is. We can also confirm that HSBC is the underwriter for Woolworths credit cards, so HSBC provides the credit for those. Hope that helps!

Hi Jeremy, you can have one additional card holder free on HSBC Qantas, but will have to pay for additional members. You will need to confirm that charge with HSBC.
