Growing up with HSBC

Despite being headquartered in London, HSBC has been part of Australia's financial landscape since 1965 and has grown to be a trusted name by Australians all over the country. Determined to provide a range of outstanding financial products, HSBC brings you a selection of excellent credit cards.

About HSBC Credit Cards

The HSBC Low Rate Credit Card is a great choice as an everyday credit card. You can benefit from competitive interest rates and a range of privileges from the HSBC home&Away program.

For rewards, try the HSBC Qantas Platinum card, perfect for frequent travellers with Qantas and its partner airlines. Or for more Platinum perks, check out the HSBC Platinum card, with access to rewards, special offers and privileges. Both Platinum cards come with a 24/7 Platinum Concierge service.

The HSBC rewards program is called Rewards Plus, and it is available with some HSBC credit cards.
Rewards Plus points can be redeemed for different products and services:
  • Flights, travel and accommodation
  • Shopping and entertainment vouchers
  • Financial rebates
  • Wine program
  • Points may also be redeemed for cashback or vouchers
The travel rewards are offered with Travel Plus, and Rewards Plus points can be used towards flights with any airline at any time. You can earn bonus points when you use your card with bonus partners throughout Australia.

HSBC offers points towards any flight, any time with Travel Plus, and also a separate frequent flyer scheme through the Qantas frequent flyer program.

Travel Plus is offered with the HSBC rewards program, Rewards Plus. Rewards Plus points can also be redeemed for travel related services such as accommodation, rail and coach travel and package holidays.

If you are interested in Qantas Frequent Flyer points, HSBC offers the HSBC Platinum Qantas Rewards card; points earned are transferred directly to Qantas. You need to be a Qantas Frequent Flyer member and link your account to HSBC.

Yes. The balance transfer rate, terms of offer and checklist for the application are featured on the card page of every HSBC card we feature. If a HSBC credit card doesn’t offer a balance transfer, it will say N/A. Remember that the promotional balance transfer rate will only be available to non-HSBC customers, you cannot transfer an outstanding balance on a HSBC credit card.

To find out what other balance transfer offers are available from other banks; simply have a look at our balance transfer credit cards.

To apply for a HSBC credit card you need to provide similar documents as for credit cards from other providers. You should make sure you meet the eligibility criteria we have listed next to each HSBC credit card before applying, and when filling in the form you should have to hand:
  • Your employment details, including a contact number for HR department
  • Details of your existing credit cards and loans or debt obligations (card numbers, account numbers and BSB, amount owing and statements)
  • Identification – drivers’ licence/passport/Medicare or other bank card or ID card
  • Details for previous employers and your previous addresses

Hi Arda, thanks for your comment but I think the best course of action is to contact HSBC and try to escalate your case. If you aren't happy with the outcome you can contact The Australian Financial Complaints Authority for further steps.

Hi Jamie, thanks for your question! Exchange rates fluctuate constantly so I suggest checking on the bank’s official site for their real time exchange rates.

I have an account with HSBC Hong Kong. A local vendor has asked me to use BPay to make a payment and I need to use my HK credit card. Can I do that? Or can I only use BPay with a local credit card?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    4 February 2020
Hi Tarryn, I do not think you can make a bpay payment with an overseas credit card. You would need some type of local account here to be able to do a bpay. You typically would do it through your online banking in Australia. You may just have to do an international transfer instead. Many bpay payments cannot be done with a credit card. If they are, they are considered a cash advance. Sounds like the local merchant wants to be paid from a bank account.

HI there i just have a standard HSBC CREDIT CARD can i transfer over to a plantinum card i earn 52k a year gross would i be eligiable to transfer to plantitum
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    9 December 2015
Hi Brett - the HSBC Platinum has a minimum income of 40k, therefore you meet that requirement. If you have good credit, then its worth applying. With no annual fee on the platinum and all the extra benefits it makes sense to switch from the standard HSBC card. Best of luck with your application.

    28 September 2015
Hi Malcolm - depends on what HSBC card you have. There is complimentary travel insurance with the Platinum and Qantas product range. I have found a PDF on the HSBC site that provides full detail of the travel insurance on these cards.

what is the limit on cash advance from HSBC credit card but I have my money elsewhere thank you

    12 August 2014
If you go into a branch you should be able to cash advance close to your limit over the counter though the interest if high, 20%+ and there are no interest free days. This would be only a very short term option but still cheaper than a payday loan.

We are travelling to Europe in May / June 2014 are there any ATMs I can use my card at and minimise fees? I have the Qantas platinum card
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    14 April 2014
Hi Edward, HSBC does not disclose any particular ATMs as cheaper for their cards. All ATMs will show the additional transaction fee at time of use - be sure to keep an eye on this to find the cheapest.

I recently had my application for a platinum card rejected because my gross salary was taken as $59.5K after $22K salary sacrifice. My normal salary being $82K. The reason given was that my gross salary was not high enough. I do not have any credit issues whatsoever and it is rather disappointing to find that I have been disadvantaged due to my retirement preparation. I could delete the salary sacrifice for 2 weeks and I assume that my application would be approved, however, that would defeat the purpose and be rather devious. I would rather be up front and honest as this is how I am. I travel overseas 3 times per year and this card is equal to the Citibank card I presently have. I am not happy with Citibank and intend to cancel my card once I have set up a comparable card with another Company with similar benefits. The HSBC platinum card will give me these similar benefits. Could you please respond and confirm that this is your policy and I have not been disadvantaged for being with Citibank for such a long period of time. Kind regards Kevin Gillard.

I want to apply for HSBC Platinum Qantas Credit Card? My salary is $54000 and I have a part time job I think it will reach $60000, am I eligible to apply for this card?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    18 September 2013
Hi John, as long as you have proof of income for your second job and meet the income and other eligibility criteria (good credit history, permanent resident or citizen of Australia and over the age of 18) there should be nothing to stop your application. We can't say whether the bank will accept or reject anyone's individual application, but if you meet the basic eligibility there's no reason to think you should be denied. It is always up to the bank to assess your whole application on its own merits.

i am on a pension can i applt for credit card
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    3 May 2013
Hi Jodie - it's not as simple as a yes or no answer in many cases. Credit cards are approved based on income, which a pension can provide if it is a low income credit card you're after. Why don't you take a look at our article on credit cards for pensioners and think about which ones to consider, there are some mentioned in there as well as some general advice. Best of luck!
