Poor credit scores can make it hard to get credit cards. However it is not impossible to get a credit card with a poor credit score or to improve a credit score.
Credit scores are a system of rating a person by the way in which they have dealt with financial commitments, usually over the last seven years. This is used for a large amount of credit, including credit cards, as it has been seen by the lenders as one of the most accurate ways to determine whether a person is likely to be paying back the money that once they are leant it. It can affect other areas as well, including getting jobs and being able to take out certain types of insurance.
If a person has a bad credit score there are credit cards that will be given. These are often advertised as credit cards that are open to people with worse credit. These credit cards tend to have fewer features and higher interest rates than standard credit cards.
It is also possible to improve a credit score. This can be done through a variety of methods. In the short term it is possible to ask for a credit record from the main credit bureaus. When the credit record arrives a number of things may then be done. Firstly there may be items on there that are erroneous. There may have been a loan that has been made to a person with a similar name or a person who has lived at the same address. If these are appearing then they can be challenged and can be struck off.
There will also be items that are on the credit record that have been there for more than seven years, and they should also be challenged and will often be removed. There are also going to be things on the credit score that may have been resolved. It is possible to write to the credit provider and ask that these are taken off.
There are long term ways of improving a credit score. These methods include taking out a small loan and paying it back regularly and in full. After a year of paying this back then the credit score should improve quite markedly. Secured credit cards are usually a good method of doing this; these are cards that are secured against a fixed sum of money that is deposited with the card issuer.
